Mario Chat / A Lookback on the Noki Bay book [56K]
« on: December 26, 2008, 09:07:42 PM »
Many of you are probably aware of the infamous Book in the Bottle, and have probably seen it yourself, too.
A friend of mine and I have recently looked to the insides of the game and extracted several model files, from which one is the Bottle scene. Thought you might be interested on some imagery of the book and how it really looks like. Below is the unnecessary huge animated GIF which shows un-rendered scenes of our journey to retrieve the book.

Here's the link to a video that observes the book more closely. For those who can't view them MP4s, here's an image.

No text or title whatsoever. Oh well.
Special thanks to Peardian for converting the original model to a readable format!

I found some strange tiles on the page with the other (English and Japanese) Title screens and upon arranging them it formed a 'new' title image.

Pretty s****y.
EDIT: Haha wow, would you look at that filter? I typed in  'Swanky' but it filtered the middle. Heh.

PATNA, India - An elephant nicknamed "Osama bin Laden" that killed at least 11 people and injured dozens has been shot dead, officials in eastern India said on Saturday.

The wild male elephant had been terrorizing villagers in two states in recent months, destroying their crops and homes.

Forest officials and a police team tracked down the rogue jumbo in the eastern state of Jharkhand late on Friday, where it was shot dead, senior government official Ravi Ranjan said.

"Yes, Osama has finally been killed and it took us 20 bullets to silence him," Ranjan told Reuters from Jharkhand on Saturday.

The graphics of the upper left corner of a Mushroom house can be found in the ROM.
There probably was a mushroom house in one point, but got removed at the last moment or something. There's still a Mushroom House in the World Map.

Mario Chat / SMB3 strange 1-up sound
« on: January 22, 2008, 02:44:39 PM »
The mystery has been solved by our very own Xkeeper. Below is a link to the video and some sweet, sweet copypasta.
Zing.

This is a tool-assisted recording. That is, it slows down the game and uses save states, mostly to get the timing perfect to demonstrate.

Explanation:
The "glitch" involves the tail wag sound effect and the 1-up sound effect's calls getting merged. The sound code reads both, treats it like a 1-up sound effect, but writes the wrong length, so it plays more notes than it should. We're still doing some research here, but the general consensus among us is that it's just a glitch.

Timing:
Simply wag Mario's tail 5 frames (1/12sec) after the "1UP" symbol appears. Done right, the sound effects will conflict and the longer "version" will play. This is extremely difficult to replicate on purpose, which might explain why it was never caught.

An ongoing discussion of the topic can be found here.
http://jul.rustedlogic.net/thread.php...

Technical explanation:
The tail wag sound effect is written (B0), then the 1-UP (40) is ORed, resulting in F0. It writes the wrong "length" for the 1-up, and as it reads bytes in reverse, the beginning is broken instead of the end.
I never had any idea about this sound, not even while continuously attempting the trick.
Anyone else ever experienced the strange sound?

Video Game Chat / Wii homebrew; Success!

Some delicious copypasta from other boards:

OH **** THEY ACTUALLY DID IT
Quote
The guys over at 24C3 just demoed a Wii hack that is set to provide native Wii
homebrew in the near future (not running in GC mode, and with full access to all the Wii hardware!)

They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory
dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface. Using these keys, they were
able to create a Wii ‘game’ that ran their own code (their demo happened to show live sensor/Wiimote information, amongst a few other things).
Video proof

So, to summarize: Yes, RSA is still not very possible to crack, but if you can get the keys, then there's no need to break the encryption!

Also, Nintendo can't "fix" this without breaking a lot of older games.  So this looks like a catch-all solution, folks!  Expect things like an Action Replay in the future!

So yeah, except some crazy new Wii homebrews to come and go soon enough. :>
I can only imagine Virtual Boy emulation on a Wii.. Heck yes.

Push me down, And I'll jump back,
I'm the first one of the quartet.
I have three children of my own,
After them, I'm departed.
You might go higher after all,
if I'm under your feet.
In few weeks, again, it's fall,
After first, we meet.

What am I?

Mario Chat / Mario's Tennis: Birdo...?
« on: April 07, 2007, 12:04:35 PM »
So after playing and watching some offsets of Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy, I made a rather fascinating discovery. Take a look at the character select screen here:

(Pardon the glitches, the emulator is incomplete.)

However, when in comparison to its hexadecimal equivalent, there's a notable string.
Starting from 0x7D694, there's a list of character names, all in the same order; Mario, Luigi, Princess, Yoshi, Toad, Koopa and DK. There's an extra name at the right, Cassarin, which apparently translates to Birdo. (Thanks, Chup)

What might this mean? I've read some FAQs and I see no mention of this "Cassarin", or Birdo for that matter at all.
