Hahaha, yeah this was gross.  Great, some creepy hipster with a whispy mustache tries to look like the androgynous anime characters you see in every JRPG.

The eShop is already amazing.  Between Club Nintendo points and a 20 gift card, I picked up Dr. Mario Express, Super Mario Land 2, Link's Awakening DX and Pushmo.  Pushmo is the most fun I've had with a puzzle game since Portal.

The 3DS got off to a slow start, but it is easily my most played system since I got it in November.  I love my Wii and my 360, but I'm gaming on a budget, so the 3DS is a crazy value.  Super Mario 3D Land alone pretty much makes the system worth the price of admission.

He's also top on the list of "most likely to be cut" for next season (Mario Kart title). If that does happen I imagine he'll meekly go back to his little dirt tracks and leagues.

I'd imagine all the racers that were introduced in MK7 are on the most likely to be cut list, unfortunately.  For better or worse, Honey Queen probably has the best chance of sticking around, since she's been an important-ish NPC in the two Galaxy games.  Everybody else is either a non-unique baddie (Wiggler, Lakitu), or Mario with a power-up (Metal Mario).  Shyguy's technically been playable in 2 Mario Karts now, so I'd say he has pretty equal odds of either coming back or getting cut. I think a big deciding factor will be MK8's roster size (mainly, will it be a HUGE cast like Double Dash!! and MKWii, or a more scaled down affair like MKDS and MK7?).  The other big factor will be whether new characters appear in any Mario main series titles between now and then.  I was surprised E. Gadd didn't make MK7... with him returning in Luigi's Mansion 2, I'll be even more surprised if he doesn't make it in MK8.  I was a little surprised we didn't get Boom-Boom or Pom-Pom either.  Maybe next time! :)

Yeah, that still kind of bums me out, he'd make a great addition to the cast.  But hey, if weirdos like Honey Queen, Wiggler and Metal Mario can make the cut, there's still hope for Kamek.

Anybody else kind of feel like Lakitu is there in place of E. Gadd?  They have vaguely similar character designs and a nerdy personality.  I really am ambivalent on E. Gadd... if he comes back in something, cool, if not... that's okay too.  Though it would be strange if he didn't return for Luigi's Mansion 2.

No, unfortunately all we know at this point is that he's working on something new.  It could seriously be anything at this point.  Which is both exciting and a little frustrating.  Hopefully we'll get some more info at E3, if not earlier.

Video Game Chat / Shigeru Miyamoto working on a new IP

Miyamoto's making a new game, and it's NOT a sequel! Guess my pitch for Ice Climber 2: Wrath of the Fire Divers didn't go as well as I thought. http://shigeruslist.com/2012/01/06/shigerus-secret-project/

I'm going to go right out and say it: this is pretty ****in' exciting.  Can't wait to see a totally fresh game concept out of this guy.

Wow, I definitely have trypophobia.  I'm not scared of clusters of holes, but they ****ing sick me out.  I always want to mash 'em up into paste just so they won't be gross little networks of yucky [dukar].  Also just judging by this last page of this thread, I lose.  I lose so much that I probably will never come back into this thread.  Well done.

The babycake was pretty funny though.

Definitely had a dream that Geno was an unlockable racer in this.  Kind of disappointed when I woke up and remembered otherwise.

I stick with the course map, but part of that is because I forget that you can change the HUD.

I disagree. That was the most fun I've had with a Zelda final boss in a long time.

Yeah, I loved the final stages of that fight.  It felt very personal but still grand and cinematic.  One of the best parts of the game in my book.

Normally I don't care at all about continuity in Zelda games, but I think the "Link Fails" branch of the timeline is totally fascinating, and a really ballsy story-telling move on Nintendo's/Aonuma's part.  http://shigeruslist.com/2011/12/29/official-zelda-timeline/

Video Game Chat / Most-Hated Boss Fight
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:47:01 AM »
So I'm really committing to finally playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past all the way through. Kind of an early New Year's resolution. I think the furthest I've ever gotten is beating the first three temples and getting the Master Sword a few years ago. For whatever reason the Zelda series wasn't my cup of tea prior to the N64 games, so I never spent much time with LttP.

But the point is I'm playing LttP now, and it's awesome... up until the ****ing stupid boss fight in the third temple. Moldorm. A big googly-eyed retardopillar. Remember him? **** this stupid thing right in its stupid, cross-eyed face. I'm borrowing the game from my girlfriend who loves LttP and has since it originally came out. Turns out she hates Moldorm too, it's her least favorite boss in the game. But man... I really hate this thing.

Seriously, I'm hard pressed to think of a boss fight I hate more than this. It's not that this is the toughest boss I've ever dealt with. Because a difficult boss is challenging and feels like an accomplishment when you defeat it. No, this one is just aggravating and so ****ing stupid-looking. Having to restart it every couple minutes because he knocks me off the platform I'm sure is where the majority of my frustration comes from. Without that irritating mechanic, this boss fight would be way too easy, so I get why it is the way it is. But I still ****ing hate it.

Maybe it's just late and I'm tired. Maybe the next time I go to play this I'll kick Moldorm's stupid, lazy-eyed face in on my first try and laugh about how frustrating he was for me. Or maybe he's my most -hated boss fight. Not just in Link to the Past, not just in the Zelda series, but in video games. Period.

Even Dracula in Castlevania 1, who is a son of a ***** mother-****er bull[dukar] is less infuriating than Moldorm. He's the FINAL boss of what is widely regarded as a difficult game, and he's ****ing DRACULA.

The only two other bosses that came to mind that seem to be in the same class as Moldorm are both from Metroid Prime II, the Boost Guardian and Emperor Ing. Emporer Ing I think falls more into the Dracula category. He's the the final boss (more or less), so of course he should be difficult. He's also weird and huge and impressive. And unlike Dracula, I was able to conquer him, which was pretty satisfying.

Boost Guardian though... I think he's more in league with Moldorm. Just kind of a herp-a-derp assface in the early/middle part of the game who's too [darn] hard for no reason. They actually toned done the difficulty of the fight when they ported MPII to Europe and for the Metroid Prime Trilogy. You know something is up when even the developer is like "Yeah this was ridiculous."

But yeah, most hated boss fights. What are yours?

Anybody pick this up?  Anybody playing?

I just got it for Christmas and I am in love.  Nostalgia notwithstanding, I think this is my favorite entry in the series.  The balance of power-sliding, coin-collecting, jump-boosting and hang-gliding makes for some extremely satisfying kart driving.  They dialed back the items just enough to keep them from becoming spammy bull[dukar], but they're present enough to keep each race interesting and keep every driver on his or her toes.

Video Game Chat / Re: Kid Icarus Uprising

Now watch, next game he'll be nearly completey mute, outside of sounds similar to Mario's "woos" and "hoo-hoos".

I would love that.  When it comes to player-characters speaking in games, I really feel like less is more.
