As Tanooki Mario, stand at the base of a vine, then turn into a statue by holding B and Down. Next, let go of B, and immediately press Up after releasing Down. If you were quick enough, Mario will be gray while climbing the vine. Mario will transform out of statue mode after you touch the ground or fall off of the vine.
