Donkey Kong Jr. is one of the 10 free NES Virtual Console games currently available only to Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors. The 3DS Ambassador game lineup also includes appearances by Mario in NES Open Tournament Golf, Super Mario Bros., Wrecking Crew, and Yoshi.

Though the 10 NES VC games for 3DS Ambassadors were scheduled to be released worldwide on September 1, 2011, they were available for download in North America and Japan a day earlier.

The standard release of Donkey Kong Jr. on the eShop was April 18, 2012 in Japan.
