The first title for the Nintendo 64 is also Mario's biggest adventure yet! Bowser has kidnapped Peach, and has transformed the portraits in her castle into magical portals to other worlds. Mario must reclaim the castle by adventuring through many challenging levels of exciting 3-D action. With a hearty mix of traditional Mario action, along with magnificent graphics that could only be possible on a 64-bit system, it's no wonder this game has been dubbed "the greatest game ever" by numerous critics.

Outside references

Wizard of Oz
In the Rainbow Ride course, Star number six is called "Somewhere over the Rainbow." This is a reference to the Judy Garland song of the same name from the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz."

Alice in Wonderland
MIPS the rabbit in the castle basement is based on the White Rabbit character from Alice in Wonderland, who, like MIPS, is also chronically late for tea.

Edgar Allan Poe
Star number two in Tick Tock Clock is named "The Pit and the Pendulums", which is also a title of a short story by Edgar Allan Poe.

Did you know...?
  • MIPS isn't just a rabbit inhabiting the castle basement. MIPS Technologies (a division of Silicon Graphics) made the Nintendo 64 processor, and MIPS the Rabbit was used as a testing model while the SM64 engine was being created.
  • Princess Toadstool has always been "Princess Peach" in Japan. The first game in America to use "Peach" was Yoshi's Safari, but the most noticed instance was in Super Mario 64, released three years later.
