Super Mario Bros. was one of the 10 free NES Virtual Console games released early only to Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors. The 3DS Ambassador game lineup also included appearances by Mario in Donkey Kong Jr., NES Open Tournament Golf, Wrecking Crew, and Yoshi.

Though the 10 NES VC games for 3DS Ambassadors were scheduled to be released worldwide on September 1, 2011, they were available for download in North America and Japan a day earlier.

The standard release of Super Mario Bros. on the eShop was January 5, 2012 in Japan, February 16, 2012 in North America, and March 1, 2012 in Europe.
