The mysterious Count Bleck has set the universe on a path to destruction. In this (mostly) 2-D adventure, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser team up to stop Bleck's evil scheme.
Super Paper Mario seamlessly blends side-scrolling platforming with RPG elements. As Mario and the rest of his party defeat enemies, they gain experience points to level up their HP and attack power. Recovery and power-up items can be purchased with coins, which are obtained from blocks, secret rooms, and defeated enemies.
Early in the game, Mario learns how to "flip" into the third dimension, where hidden paths, coins, and enemies often appear. The other party members also have their own unique ability: Peach's parasol deflects projectiles and lets her float; Bowser's strength and fire breath make him a powerful (but slow) offensive threat; Luigi's high jump increases the heroes' vertical range.
During the adventure, the group is joined by Pixls -- colorful, fairy-like creatures who grant the heroes special powers. For example, Tippi provides information or hints when you point at an object with the Wii Remote. Cudge, the hammer Pixl, and Boomer, the bomb Pixl, give the team new attacks. There are 13 Pixls total, but four of them are not needed to complete the game.
Super Paper Mario was re-released as part of the reduced-price "Nintendo Selects" series on August 28, 2011 in North America.
