Koopa Troopa »Japanese: ノコノコ (Nokonoko) Playable character | One of eight selectable characters. An all-around racer with good traction, similar to Toad. |
Lakitu »NPC | The "owner" of the Mario Grand Prix. Lakitu will rescue your kart if it falls in the water or off the track. This service costs two Coins, unless you don't have any. |

Poison Mushroom »Item | Dropped or thrown by computer-controlled Princess Toadstool and Toad, these will temporarily shrink your character. Collecting another mushroom will reverse the condition. |
Princess Peach Toadstool »Japanese: ピーチ姫 (Princess Peach) Playable character | Much like Yoshi, Princess has fast acceleration, but a low top speed. |

Thwomp »Enemy | A spike-less hunk of stone that moves up and down (starting on the second lap), aiming to squash unlucky racers. Touching the flashing Thwomps in Rainbow Road will make your kart spin out, and you'll lose four Coins. |
Toad »Playable character | Like Koopa Troopa, Toad doesn't have great top speed, but corners well. |
Yoshi »Playable character | One of eight selectable characters. Yoshi has the fastest acceleration, but a very low top speed like Princess Toadstool. |
Zipper »Item | Gives your kart a short speed boost after driving over it. |
