How's it broken on any difficulty that's not peaceful?

I can't go out more than half a day's distance from my spawn point for fear of getting killed, because it's certainly not possible to fight mobs for any extended length of time.  It severely limits the exploration factor in the game.

You sound like you've never tried using weapons or armor. Anyway, I usually have the game on Peaceful for the first few days just to build a basic house and to gather some materials, then I turn the difficulty up and go on from there.

Yeah, I've gotten back into it the last day or two. Once again, I'd enjoy it a lot more if it didn't run like crap on my laptop.

Yeah, my computer is fairly fast and I still can't feasibly have the draw distance set past "Normal."  And even then, it gets somewhat framey.

I've decided to deal with the bad framerate and run it on Normal, because it freezes up for a couple seconds every now and then no matter what the render distance is.

So I tried everything to boost my framerate: setting the process' affinity to one core, setting its priority to "High," putting all the in-game settings down to the bare minimum, using my High Performance power plan... then last night I switched my default graphics processor to the NVIDIA High Performance option.  Runs like a dream, even with the farthest render distance and "Fancy" graphics.

(Pretty sure this is fake, but I still grinned when I saw it.)

I get 15fps on Short render distance.
Anyways, that's just a different texture, not fake.

Also, what's the deal with the item icons? (Sorry, I don't know jack about texture mods)

I'm using a texture called Mixcraft HD.  It's basically the default textures converted to 32x32.
