Title: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: Vidgmchtr on April 29, 2008, 12:58:37 AM
The thread on Brawl was popular, so:

Ups:
• The Wii Wheel actually does work fine, I like it.
• I thought the idea of karts AND bikes was pretty cool too.
• Yoshi's new vocals, they make me laugh

Downs:
• Baby Daisy. 'Nuff said.
• Still no cup featuring all Rainbow Roads
• With the retro levels, I think they should've used the intros used in each MK game the track is from. Not important, but I think it'd be a nice touch.

List some of your opinions.

Ups:
-Like Vidgmchtr said, nice steering wheel feel.
-Great new tracks, especially DK Summit.
-Interesting characters, like Dry Bowser (still need to unlock him).

Downs:
-NO WALUIGI PINBALL?!
-Rosalina is way too random to unlock.
-King Boo was way too easy to unlock (Well they didn't have another spot, I guess...)

Green is the most awesome color.  The number four is bad.  In my opinion Mario Kart Wii is the best selling game ever.

+ Get to use bikes as well as karts.
+ Playable Rosalina/Funky Kong.
+ Some of my favourite retro tracks appear.
+ No playable Petey Pirahna.

- Flying Blue Shell is still in here.
- New Power-ups suck.
- Get constantly hit in first place (even at 50cc level).
- Baby Characters (come on nintendo, what happened to originality?).
- Wii Wheel control method sucks.
- Some of the retro levels suck (GBA Shy Guy Beach particularly).
- Removal of character-specific weapons.

+Wii Wheel control
+Playing as the Mii
+Great tracks
+Much, much shorter waiting time for Online Play
+Very little lag in Online, even with 12 players

-Graphics seem recycled and unchanged since GameCube
-Battle Mode is changed
-Track names feel too generic
-Easy to be knocked off the track repeatedly
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: Vidgmchtr on April 29, 2008, 11:14:28 AM
Oh, another down:

This might be just me, but the items that can give a huge advantage (Lightning bolt, Blue shells, POW blocks, etc.) are WAY too common. If you maintain the lead for most of the race, you WILL get hit by at least 2 blue shells in each track, and struck by lightning 3 times. Very annoying. Of course, nice for the people who're struggling to get into the lead, not for you.

Wait.... Funky Kong is playable? Funky Kong? I would've preferred Dixie Kong.

+ I love the textures on the Super NES tracks. To quote myself, it's like a 16-bit dream.
+ Some sweet new tracks. Koopa Cape is awesome.
+ I was worried, but I approve of Yoshi's new voice clips.
+ Use of Miis very light, tolerable. I won't be playing as one very often (still haven't unlocked that feature yet, but I want to play Mario Kart... as Yoshi).
+ Though snaking is said to be taken out, you can still kind of do it... drifting back and forth on straightaways is still possible, but it takes a little longer for the boost to happen, so it's a bit slower.

- No WarioWare Wario (c'mon, at least just for bikes?)
- No individualized karts or bikes. I miss the Egg 1.
- Not the best retro choices. Mario Circuit 3 rocks, but bad DS and GameCube tracks. Waluigi Pinball is the only cool thing with Waluigi's name on it, and I LOVE Wario Collosseum.
- Too many Piantas. What do they see in Mario Sunshine?
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs

+Random characters.
+Miis (Like, how mine is Captain Falcon)
+Snaking is taken out.
+Awesome new courses.

-Recycled graphics from DD, making it look like an early Gamecube game.
-Unoriginal names.
-Boring bikes and karts.
-The GP Mode is totally unfair.
-Rosalina is a heavyweight...why?
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs

+Miis (Like, how mine is Captain Falcon)

That's awesome, if he's a lightweight, you can actually unlock the "Blue Falcon" in the game.

+ Online. The way NWC should be, way better than SSBB.
+ Level design and amount of levels

Negatives will be considered at a later date.

I used Pokey Minch as the Mii, and ended up having to resize his hidden secret eyes and eyebrows so they wouldn't pop up through his big umbrella of a hairdo. But, I'll be sticking with Yoshi.
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: Kojinka on April 29, 2008, 10:45:03 PM
+ Fun tracks
+ Luma riding with Rosalina
+ The Wii Wheel is actually pretty smooth

- Still have winged blue shells, and they, along with other items like the lightning bolt, appear WAY too frequently.  It's annoying when you're racing against CPUs
- Where are the retro Rainbow Roads?
- No MK64 Koopa Troopa Beach.  That track, with its ramp jumps, would have translated well for MKW's airborne tricks feature.
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: Super-Jesse on April 29, 2008, 11:13:28 PM
- Where are the retro Rainbow Roads?

<Super-Jesse> they should have an all rainbow road cup
<Deezer> heh

I agree about the blue shell thing. I went through a race where i was in first and in a manner of about 30 seconds two blue shells struck me 5 seconds apart, followed by a POW and a red shell. I ended up in 3rd place.

Another down:

-Ranks.

So getting the gold isn't enough anymore. D:
To unlock Bowser Jr., you must have a rank of at least one star in all retro cups on 100cc. I'm already yelling too much playing 100cc as it is (I yell because I love, honestly), now I have to redo any retro cup GP I have less than one star on to get him.
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: BP on April 30, 2008, 01:20:39 AM
Doesn't sound incredibly difficult... if the Wheel isn't involved. I got Bronze on 100cc Lightning Cup, tried again immediately after with a GameCube controller, and got a perfect score.

I also wish the items were like 64 and Super Circuit, you know, almost the same as now but not impossible to to get rare items no matter where you place. For example, in SC I got a Star in second.
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: Chupperson Weird on April 30, 2008, 07:28:23 PM
+ nice lens flares

- rest of graphics are early GCN era
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: NintendoExpert89 on May 01, 2008, 09:02:53 AM
A down:

- Really noticeable slowdown in frame rate when 3+ humans are playing in Multiplayer (even when the AI karts are turned off). Considering that the Wii is more powerful than the GCN and the graphics are not that complex, you'd think that some effort could've been made to keep a constant frame rate.
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs
Post by: missingno on May 01, 2008, 04:59:49 PM
I'll start with the downs.

The game could definitely use more tracks, only eight cups doesn't seem like enough for such a seemingly big game. Also, they most definitely did over-use the "baby" characters. Also, I don't like some of the alterations to the past tracks.

Now with the good

The levels are beautiful and well-designed, the character roster is for the most part awesome, the Wheel is a great feature to include with this game, and the most important reason as to why it's good.... it's freakin' Mario Kart.

I do think there should've been something that allows our actual voices to be recorded to be our Mii's voice, though.

Down: No custom emblems. I know, they got replaced by the players' Miis, but that isn't nearly as cool. They could've and should've had both. The coolest thing about online Mario Kart that I never got to really experience...

I do think there should've been something that allows our actual voices to be recorded to be our Mii's voice, though.
But then all we'd hear from the Miis are prerecorded phrases from other videogame characters, Seinfeld or Shaun of the Dead quotes, and maybe some inappropriate stuff too. I don't expect too many people to use their actual voices.

Though I think it'd be funny to hear Banjo's voice coming out of the Miis. Guh-huh guh-huh guh-huh.
Or Peter Griffin's laugh, so a Mii can taunt someone after they just red shell'd someone.
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs

I hate how people are dissing Miis.

With my Mii (or myself, I might add) I've gotten 180 Wins and only 38 looses on Wi-Fi.

Take that media!
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs

Miis are cool, and don't change the way I feel about the game. I wish they allowed you to record your own vocals, but meh.
Though I think it'd be funny to hear Banjo's voice coming out of the Miis. Guh-huh guh-huh guh-huh.

Ups
-Wii Wheel is actually kind of fun (but there's still every other control scheme under the sun if that doesn't float your boat).
-Addition of bikes/tricks system adds variety.
-Great new tracks + first console appearance of the Retro Cup (even for Battle Mode stages!) = Good.

Downs
-Just about all of the new characters were bad ideas.
-Plenty of stages that would've been great in the Retro Cup aren't there and some that are shouldn'tve been.
-The Mii's voice will haunt my dreams forever.

Suffix has the Golden Wheel, and he's still a beast. (But could he be still better?)

Down: Being forced to race at 100cc online.
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs

Why, thank you Lizard Dude-- but you're still more than a match for me. My item strategies are very refined, but my driving is less than perfect.

The Wii Wheel was originally a source of great pain for me, but now I feel that I've developed decent control with it. You won't hear any downs about it from me.

Here's a down I don't know if anybody has mentioned: victory in 1P battle mode is pretty random, because the strength of your team wobbles considerably, and there's only team-based battles.

Ups:
+ single characters in each kart
+ 12 player online
+ wii wheel
+ new tracks
+ bikes and tricks are awesome
+ Koopa is chooseable again
+ online ranked is cool

Downs:
- Rosalina is a heavy wieght?
- strong items come to often
- emblems are gone
- battle mode is worse
- a lot of retro cources are dumb

Dark Matter (truthfully) is substances so tiny and so motionless that it is undetectable and would pass right through you without you noticing. So yes, Super Mario Galaxy got it wrong.

let's be blunt here.

Up:
-Some interesting tracks, such as the Wario Mine level, Grumble Volcano, and Koopa Cape
-The Wii Wheel is interesting
-Lag-free online play
-Return of some cool tracks from previous Mario Kart games

Downs:
-Regression from Mario Kart: Double Dash
-The new power ups are lame, and have been made so everyone has a chance to win, other than having skill
-Most of the new tracks are uninspired
-Some of the old tracks I'd rather have without
-Annoying new voices
-Annoying new characters (really? more baby characters?)
-No voice chat
Title: Re: MKWii's Ups and Downs

- Rosalina is a heavy wieght?
Yeah, WTD? (I think it might have something to do with her little Luma friend and the fact that they wanted to balance out the classes regardless of whether it made sense or not) It's weird, but I don't know if it's anything to hold against the game.

-Regression from Mario Kart: Double Dash
I know this is a hot topic--and I'm definitely not loving everything about MKW--but I fussed about the same thing for a while... until I realized something: With the addition of four extra racing places, three new items, and the overbearing presence of items as it was, having two people in one kart would render the game virtually unplayable. I mean, all that stuff I just mentioned is turning a lot of people off of the game (because it levels the playing field by making gameplay too random and frustrating), right? Well, with MKDD's double karts came double Item Boxes and character-specific items, which brings the total number of times you could be hit by a Blue Shell, Red Shell, and everything-else-in-between to... oh, Lord, I don't even want to think about it. Besides, two things: One; MKDS didn't have double karts and it rocks. Two; how are you going to fit two Mario characters on a motorcycle, anyway?

Sidecar.

As for Rosalina's weight class, it really has nothing to do with her--she just rides the heavy vehicles. Like Bowser Jr. and Diddy becoming middleweights and Waluigi becoming heavy. There's not really a problem. And up until now there haven't been any female heavyweights.

Sidecar.

Grammar Nazi Invasion!

It would be either:

                Or
"It's not heavy--it's my sidecar."

Considering the allusion I think you were going for, I'd go with the first.
