I'd end up keeping my Wii and storing it somewhere, and the Wii U would take its spot on the TV.

Latest News / Re: Nintendo announces new Yoshi and Mario games for Wii U

I was hoping for a 3D Yoshi's Island-style game, but this one looks all right. I just don't like the yarn art style, but I'll judge it fairly once I see more of the game.

How much did Nintendo pay you to write that?

But really, I guess I expected SS to right all of SPM's wrongs.

Don't get me wrong; I'd LOVE another Paper Mario in the first two games' styles and would prefer it over the Sticker Star style. However, they can still improve the formula used in Sticker Star (whereas the formula in TTYD is much more fleshed out and nearly flawless in my humble opinion), and I want to see how they do it.

Update (sorry for the double post):

I'm pretty much done with the game and it's been a blast so far. The formula used in the first two games was perfected in TTYD and I'm okay with them not touching it again. I would definitely like to see another Paper Mario in the style of Sticker Star, but this time I want original characters like the other games and several other features including the following:

-Some of the event battles were brilliant puzzles (putting the Chain Chomp to sleep and running from battle to release it); keep them in the next one!
-Being able to target the enemy you want to attack
-Some sort of experience points and stats to increase on level up
-More actions in battle, including the ability to do nothing or defend for a turn
-A better indication of whether enemies are able to dodge attacks or not (those Wiggler pieces were annoying)
-The ability to use some stickers, like Mushroom Stickers, outside of battle
-A slightly longer game!

Overall, I greatly enjoyed Sticker Star...even more than I thought I would. You can tell they really put a lot of thought and effort into the game, and the results show.

Mario Chat / Yoshi's Land

Apparently someone hacked into Miiverse and found some test messages from Nintendo developers that mentioned Yoshi's Land, a currently unannounced game. Additionally, several retailers have listings for the game. To me this is great news, and hopefully we'll finally get a 3D Yoshi adventure!

What does everyone else think?

I got this game yesterday, and for the most part I don't mind the new direction they took. They do all sorts of funny and interesting things with stickers. I would've preferred if there was a leveling system though since I really have no incentive to fight enemies when I have a full sticker album and a substantial amount of coins. The secrets and puzzles are harder to figure out than in the previous games.

"Nowadays, these kids just babble. That's all they do."

Let's see here...

Decimate the profit potential, destroy the business model, lower the barrier of entry, and then minimize what little disposable income adolescents might have once had.

Furthermore, part of what you're referring to is merely part of getting older. Less disposable time leads to less tolerance for anything less than great. Plus, people have a tendency to romanticize the past.

You're kind of right, but also think of the art itself. Do you hear anything meaningful in mainstream hip-hop nowadays, let alone a decent flow, solid (non-cheesy) rhymes, and actual skill at rapping? I wouldn't complain about it if the style was different and the rappers were actually good, but now people are just using it for their paychecks and 15 minutes of fame.

There certainly was some bad music then, but the real difference is the only hip-hop is underground now unlike back then where plenty of quality artists got mainstream attention.

Also check out MegaRan (aka Random). He talks about playing video games and uses remixed video game music as his beats.

The "Hip-Hop" you hear on the radio nowadays is more like Hip-Pop. Real Hip-Hop is long gone from mainstream attention, and what you hear is just a bunch of wannabes trying to get their 15 minutes of fame. There are still numerous underground artists keeping the real Hip-Hop alive.

Look at stuff from the 80s and early-mid 90s like A Tribe Called Quest, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Nas, and Rakim and you'll see what I mean. They talk about their struggles, political issues, REAL relationships, etc. There are even some rappers back in the day that straight up refused to curse in their songs (C.L. Smooth).

Not only was the song material better back then, but so were the artists. From Kool G Rap's insane multisyllabic rhyming ability to Rakim's smooth flow, the music was pleasing to the ears even if you weren't paying attention to the lyrics. Nowadays all you hear are fakes claiming to be gangsters and growing up in the ghetto when they experienced nothing of the sort. I fail to understand how their meaningless noise got so popular.

What power does it have when it has a shell in its mouth?

Video Game Chat / Sidescrolling Beat 'em up games
« on: November 26, 2012, 10:12:49 PM »
Beat 'Em Ups are some of my favorite games, especially classic sidescrolling ones like Final Fight and Streets of Rage 2. Does anyone know of any recent games that are like this? It seems like they've mostly been abandoned for the sidescrolling action RPGs with leveling up and other stuff.

Sounds awesome! I wonder how many levels they'll include.
