Ladies and gentlemen, this is a platformer. Fantastic wall-jumping wall-sliding action, brutal difficulty, tons of characters, collectible out-of-the-way items, secret mini-game worlds, references to classic videogames, references to tons of hit indie games, a really cool Light World/Dark World structure, and most importantly it screams its own name at the title screen.

Discuss SMB here.
Shouldn't this go in Mario Chat then?
...lol
-
Hey, at least he didn't call it "Why Don't Any of You People Have Super Meat Boy".
I'm holding out for the Steam release.
-
I haven't seen anything like this before. Looks pretty tough, I might check it out.
-
My roommate told me about it. It looks pretty good.
-
Is this an XBLA game?
-
Yeah, it came out on XBLA this week. Also WiiWare, and it's coming to PC at some point later on (which is when I'll buy it).
-
A good way to describe this game is "N+ at 3x speed".
A really neat feature is that when you beat a level, it shows you a replay of all your attempts at the level at the same time. So on a hard level, you'll see a giant herd of your 40 previous failed runs all hurtling to their dooms at once.
-
Yes! .. wait, that's a good feature? XD
It sounds like fun. Maybe after we get our wireless working again, I can download..
-
"N+ at 3x speed"
Oh [dukar].
Definitely buying this game.
-
Saw this on the SMB Twitter today. I wasn't sure which thread it belongs in, but finally decided: (going to call it spoilers just to be safe) (http://twitpic.com/34pl1y)
I am going to buy the crap out of this game.
-
I saw that it got butt good reviews, so like a cheap guy who doesn't have any Xbox points at the moment, I played its precursor Meat Boy (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/463241). If Meat Boy is indicative of the quality of Super Meat Boy, I will buy it.
-
As a newbie 360 owner, Solid, you may be interested to know that all XBLA games have trial versions.
-
Free trial versions, to be more specific. I played the trial of Super Meat Boy and I'm buying it the instant I get off for winter break.
-
As a newbie 360 owner, Solid, you may be interested to know that all XBLA games have trial versions.
Yeah, I know. It was just easier for me to play the flash game immediately after reading the SMB review since I was already on my computer.
On an unrelated matter, I find it strangely endearing that you described me as a "newbie" and not a "noob." It makes me feel like I have the potential to be an awesome Xbox 360 owner.
-
Just announced: the PC version of Super Meat Boy is taking the "exclusive character" thing too far. If you buy it on Steam you get a headcrab as the first unlock; anywhere else gets you a goo ball instead. I want both, but the convenience of Steam and the $5 discount if you preorder on there mean I'll get the former.
-
I'm getting the Xbox 360 version because I can.
-
I think the 360 version has characters that the PC won't, so there's unique characters no matter what you do. Only a True Fan will see them all.
-
anywhere else gets you a goo ball
Goo ball? As in from World of Goo?
-
Yes, Toad.
And yeah, the 360 version has six exclusive characters. The PC version will have seven, but there'll only be six in any given install. (The Wii version is probably going to have exclusive characters as well if they ever figure out how that's being released, so that's four purchases if you want to play as everyone - super-true fan!)
On another note, the 360 version is getting new levels as free updates, but the PC version will be getting a level editor that'll let you make anything you see in-game except boss levels; while the new levels for the 360 version won't be added for PC, they'll all be replicable in the editor. The best fanmade levels will also be added to the 360 version.
-
So as a non-360 owner, which version should I get if I only get one?
In any case... Attention, Steam: When a game is:
1) Already out on another system
and
2) Released online in the 21st century
"November" is not an acceptably accurate release date. (At least, that's what it said last I checked)
-
If you look at the official site there's a countdown until the game's release. It only went up earlier today because Team Meat just announced the release date earlier today.
-
Steam's got the $5 discount early 360 buyers got if you preorder (http://store.steampowered.com/app/40800/), so I've done so.
-
New blog post says there's no reason not to buy on Steam - the character previously stated to be exclusive to non-Steam is going to be in that version after all. Hell yeah.
-
Alright, I threw down my preorder today.
-
I've preordered as well. Seeing the character list has made me wanna play RunMan again, so I think I will.
-
Yeah, I'm going through and playing as many of the games the secret characters come from as I can before it comes out (except I Wanna Be The Guy because it's a bad game).
Really, though, any reason to play through World of Goo and Mighty Jill Off again is a good one.
-
Holy butts this game is hard.
-
Seriously guys. This game is mega mega mega mega rape. This is the hardest game I've ever played. Holy crap.

The Super Meat Boy OST (http://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/album/super-meat-boy-soundtrack) is $1.99 until Thursday. I'm going to hold off on buying it until after I play the game, though.
-
The game was supposed to be out a few hours ago, but it's listed as being out in approximately two hours. It seems not even Team Meat can escape Valve Time.
(On the other hand...we get a release delay of a few hours. 360 users had to deal with screwed-up leaderboards and a save bug for over a week after the game came out. I'd say it evens out.)
-
Super Meat Boy 100%. Total deaths: 7310
-
Loving it, yet I find myself screaming strange and terrible swears a lot while playing. Such as "Ugh, GOD'S CRUSTY BOXERS"
-
Super Meat Boy 100%. Total deaths: 7310
Why don't you have the achievement for it?
-
What is the intro to CH3 referencing? I don't recognize that one.
-
I unlocked Headcrab. It's pretty unruly to control on the walls I think. Dunno if I'll use it much.
-
That's a shame, since its primary power is the wall weirdness. I found it pretty awesome, myself.
And I guess when bobman posted that he hadn't licked enough boots.

Dood, somebody answer my question!
-
Dragon Warrior?
-
I looked it up. It's Adventures of Lolo .
-
Ah, thanks. I even technically own that game! TEM gifted it to me on VC like eight years ago, I think 99% because it had "LOL" in the name, and I proceeded to never play it. <_< >_> DON'T TELL HIM

Tofu Boy being added to Super Meat Boy (http://twitter.com/SuperMeatBoy/status/10230275837534208) (PC-exclusive (http://twitter.com/SuperMeatBoy/status/10230662392971264))

I am strongly considering referring to this game as an action-puzzler.

Ok, what is CH3? I'm behind in my acronyms.
-
Chapter 3.
-
I am strongly considering referring to this game as an action-puzzler.
Why?
-
This post may contain minor spoilers.
Super Meat Boy 125% progress (legit 100% completion). Deaths: 10945
So it turns out this game is super glitchy in terms of tracking progress. Sometimes the game won't save the levels you beat and the bandages you get, and you have no way of knowing when it stopped saving until you turn the game on next time and see all the levels that got erased. This happened to me a lot. But the completion percentages and bandage tracking remain the same. So when I replayed levels and re-got the bandages, the percentages kept climbing. I ended up with 25/20 bandages and 149% complete in one of the chapters.
I didn't realize this was a glitch until very recently. I thought the game was just really awesome and allowed you to complete over one hundred percent of the chapters, and there were actually 25 bandages available in each chapter instead of 20, and the counter was just out of 20 to fool you. I spent a lot of time looking for the last bandages in the worlds that said 22/20 or 23/20. I also got excited because I thought the achievement for 100% completion would activate when the game progress on the statistics screen said 100% and not when you actually beat every level and get every bandage. I realized it was actually a glitch when I only counted 20 bandages on the screen.
I made my last post when my progress on the stats screen said 100%. My Light World progress was over 100%, and my dark world was somewhere around 60%. I knew I would post again when I had actually completed 100% of the game, as I have now. As Lizard Dude pointed out, though, I didn't have the 100% achievement. I thought that was because I actually did need to get legit 100% completion, but weirdly, the achievement unlocked only a few levels after my post. Before I got the Beat the Dark Worlds achievement. So the achievements are glitchy too.
I don't know if my deaths were erased along with the levels during the save fails, or if the death count kept climbing like the percentage. I would say I had about a thousand deaths in my replay attempts. Among many smaller one- or two-level replayings, erased at some point were: the entirety of Cotton Alley light world, the entirety of The End dark world, and a few Warp Zone bandages and other tough bandages.
So I pretty much got cheated out of the best part of this game: the glorious feeling of beating a level and the satisfaction in knowing I will never have to do it again, because I did have to do it again. And it wasn't the same the second time, because I knew I'd already done it. In short, this game caused various amounts and various varieties of RAGE.
But it's a fantastic game. Great atmosphere, great characters, great music, great control and gameplay feel. And it's hard, but it's not super hard. Once you figure out how to play it, it's actually pretty easy. It just comes down to how fast your muscles can memorize the feel of each jump in the level. Yes, I was angry when I had to replay a bunch of levels, but it didn't take long because I'd done them before, I knew the trick and where to go for each level. I could probably play through it again right now and beat it in under 2000 deaths. But the trick is to do it immediately, before my muscles lose the memory. I'm not going to do it though, I just kicked this game's ass and it can go suck one.
-
The day SMB came out I played through a chapter and a half, getting most of the bandages and warp zones along the way. I then quit to eat or something and came back later. None of the levels were beaten. I went UHHHHHHHHH and looked on the internet. People said a patch for this was coming soon and would also add a buttload of new levels to the game.
I have since procrastinated on SMB as hard as I could, 100%ing multiple other games, and still the patch has not come out. :<
bobman37: Your stats may get set to their proper values once the patch hits. *shrug*
-
Why?
It's just that the almost mathematical precision required to survive some of the levels--combined with the large amount of short, fast-paced levels--reminds me more of an action-puzzler. Of course, there's the alternate genre title: Butt-rapingly-hard platformer.
-
Uh, didn't that patch already come out, Lizard Dude? If not, you can thank Microsoft's certification process for the delay - on PC, we had a patch the day after the game came out, and a second patch the day after that.
We were lucky enough not to have any progress-destroying bugs or issues like bobman's in the PC version; instead, we had a billion crashes, some issues with the exclusive characters being massively broken, and problems with DirectInput gamepads. And most of those problems have been fixed. I've been having issues with another bug, though, one that involves moving platforms killing me for no reason at all. It's ridiculous watching replays and seeing a bunch of whichever character die while standing still, far away from any obstacles.
Still enjoying the game, though. I haven't been playing much since my initial couple of sessions (partially due to having to get patches and my connection being stupid), but at the chapter four boss I'm still way ahead of all my friends on Steam who have the game.
-
bobman37: Your stats may get set to their proper values once the patch hits. *shrug*
Yeah I thought of that. I'll probably take a picture today.

(yes, the PC version does actually say "Gamertag"; it has a lot of stuff left in from the 360 version that's rather low-priority compared to the gamebreaking bugs they've been fixing, like the one that led to the time shown in that image)
-
There has indeed been no patch yet on 360. Microsoft are giant dukars about patching, unless your game has Halo or Duty in the title. See also: Valve's PS3 speech last E3.

...O.M.G.
-
I lost forever.
-
That is very well done.
-
While Microsoft dicks over console gamers by making them wait for a patch for the XBLA version, we have another patch coming on PC that fixes a few more things and adds Dark World Ironman (no-death) achievements.
Going from LD's logic, I wonder if the patch would come out faster if Team Meat added a subtitle to the 360 version: "Duty of Halo Gears"
-
You know, I'm kinda glad I played it before it got patched. Beating it 100% in its glitchy, save-bug status makes me even more godly of a gamer.
-
It was less broken on 360 in the first place, though. We still have a lot of bugs on the PC version, and sometimes they inadvertently introduce more with their fixes. One of the patches made trying to play chapter five crash the game, for example. And the most recent patch has screwed up some people's unlocks.
-
This game is slowly becoming a perfect example of how patches can completely cripple the incentive to make a game right the first time around. I mean, okay, the first one on Steam was only a few hours after it came out... but leaving out a couple of bosses? Come on.
-
Megapatches are the new delays. Because that way companies get their money sooner.
-
Patches also kill the fun of glitch-finding. If programmers had the ability to patch their releases in 1985, Super Mario Bros.' Minus World glitch (among countless other) would be long-gone from the annals of gaming history by today.
-
And let's not get started on Metroid Prime: Player's Choice Edition.
-
We'd also likely not have wavedashing or item- and Pokémon-duping glitches if non-PC games prior to this generation had been patchable outside of reprints. I'm not seeing the problem here.
-
The problem isn't unique, game-enhancing little things that don't really affect you if you don't know they exist--it's stupid crap like
CRASHING DURING GAMPLAY AFTER ABOUT 3 LEVELS
-
Some of these problems are related to the computers people are trying to play the game on rather than the game itself, you know. Team Meat had maybe three machines to test the PC version of Super Meat Boy on. No way they were going to catch everything.
Furthermore, I'd guess it's pretty tough to port a game to PC after releasing it on a console and having to deal with Microsoft making fixing that version an absolute pain.
-
Oh, since it wasn't mentioned before (unless you looked at the filename):
That image Lizard Dude posted isn't just fan art. That's the box art for the retail release of the PC version.
-
That makes it even more awesome.
-
Anyone know what's happening with the wiiware version? Unfortunately for me that's the only version I would be able to get.
-
They're trying to work out their options with Nintendo. The game exceeds the file size limit on WiiWare games, and they don't want to have to cut stuff.
-
I hate to consider this, but maybe they'll release it in overpriced "chapters" like they did for FFIV: The After Years.
-
SUPER MEAT BOY FOR LESS THAN FOUR DOLLARS (http://store.steampowered.com/app/40800/)
GO GO GO
-
Well, it sounds like the WiiWare release has been officially nixed, and the retail one's not looking too good either.
-
Yeah, they made it official on the SMB Twitter feed earlier. Sucks, but it's not their fault. Hopefully a retail version can become a thing.
-
SUPER MEAT BOY FOR LESS THAN FOUR DOLLARS (http://store.steampowered.com/app/40800/)
GO GO GO

I'm still holding off on attempting to play any more of this thing until I can get a controller to function. I spent $10 on Xpadder and the POS isn't working.
-
Uh...? Xpadder is free.
-
Well, I tried a bunch of the free versions I found, but they didn't work with Windows 7. So then... what the hell did I buy?
The point is, I'm sick of following instructions for all these stupid programs and them not working. I'm considering just writing off the $10 for Xpadder and buying a 360 controller.
-
Here's the picture/stats I was talking about.

SMB Twitter says the XBLA patch is finally out!
-
/me looks out his window to see a pig flying over Jesus, who has just returned to Earth.
-
Oh, come on. It wasn't that (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/17/dodonpachi_patch/) long.
-
Maybe, but I just wish this patch would have come out back when I still had the reflexes of my youth.
-
Finally you n00b(s) will suffer through the pain I experienced, except less hardcore-so.
-
They're going to be uploading more levels now that the patch is out, so you can have some more pain too if you like.
-
Rocket turrets?! Why did it have to be rocket turrets?
bobman, out of curiosity, have you A+'d all 40 Internets levels currently released?
-
Negative. I have not played the internets levels because they do not count for completion percentage and that was all I was going for and after I got 100% SMB could go suck a big one.
-
Ah good, so there's a way I can be better than you.
-
Temporarily.
-
Have any of you chumps beat this game yet?
-
I gave up because there was lag and I had more important things to be doing. My younger brother picked up the slack, though, but he's generally been better at games than me, anyway.
-
Got it as part of the latest Humble Indie Bundle, started it after my first Skyrim playthrough. Crazy hard and crazy fun. I doubt I'll go for the Achievements, since a good chunk of them are "clear [world] without dying" but I will be, at the very least, going for A+ on every stage.
This game is also the second-biggest cause of hand cramps in my life.
The biggest cause is handwriting, you sicko
-
This game is also the second-biggest cause of hand cramps in my life.

Liar, biggest cause is That Stupid Pony Show.
On a related note, I've been playing a ton of The Binding of Isaac, the next game by the Super Meat Boy dude. It's really good. Replay value through the roof.
Anyway, have any of you chumps beat this game yet?
-
Just beat Dr. Fetus, going to do Dark World Dr. Fetus later.
