Title: Game Music Discussion
Post by: Chupperson Weird on October 22, 2003, 11:21:27 PM
Hmm, I just thought I'd post this and see how it flies.

To start things off, if you like to listen to game music, who's your favorite composer?

CW's answer: Yasunori Mitsuda

Who was the guy who composed Bubble Bobble again? ;)

In all seriousness, I'd have to say...I don't know. Let me think. I don't really know many of their names. It is probably going to end up as Kondo or Uematsu, though, but that bugs me because do I like their music on an absolute scale, or just because their games also have so much meaning to me and their music just brings it out in me? Commence pondering, young Mr. Dude, commence pondering.

I’m not stupid, I’m LD.

"Koji Kondo and Nobou Uematsu."

Right on target. Although, I do prefer Uematsu to Kondo. They're both very talented.

Markio, I believe Hajime Wakai wrote a lot of the Star Fox 64 music...

Hmm. Interesting thoughts, LD. I have pondered stuff like this myself... and come to the conclusion that some of my favorite game music, in Star Fox Adventures, is made more important to me because I like the game... it's more the feeling and memory of it than the music, sometimes. However, with Mitsuda, I haven't even played most of the games that he wrote for (I hope that changes sometime), and yet I like all his music that I've heard so far. I haven't heard anyone else that can inject as much emotion into a song... yet, anyway.
I like Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu immensely, but I feel they write more aggressively, not quite as in tune with my mind as other music...

Also, I'd have to say I agree with The Big Boo... the Mega Man games' music (original and X series, at least) is all good, it's just not all the best. My favorite Mega Man composer is Bun Bun. :-D

Maestro, are you gonna post more SMS MP3s soon?

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH this post was too long

P.S. LD, Tadashi Kimijima composed the Bubble Bobble music. ;-P

I don't know the names of any composers but I do know that the greatest piece of video game music ever made, is the theme to the Casino Nights stages on Sonic 2.

Time slowed and Reality bent.

"I the great Thunderhand!

And more on-topic, I'd once put lyrics to the Casino Night Zone song, but the only line I can remember now is "Martinis all on us, s'long as you spend your dough."

Game music rules. If anybody wants to hear some samples of it, let me know, and I'll upload some MP3s. This is what you have to choose from. If I get too many requests, then I will have to pick and choose among them. Conversely, if I get none, then I will upload nothing.

I think I'm currently in a state of not knowing who my favorite composer is. There's so much good music by so many different people that it can be hard for me to make up my mind. Maybe in the future I'll again have a better idea about that.

If there is a piece of game music that you enjoy, and you would like to know who composed it, then I recommend you take a look at this handy composers list.

I don't care so much for Banjo-Kazooie... It IS catchy, but it gets kinda old after a while when you're looking FOUR HOURS FOR THE STUPID PUZZLE PIECE! But still, I'll never get tired of the Rusty Bucket Bay music. Though maybe because that was one of the easiest levels...

Check this, Chup.

Final Battle (5.7 MB)

I like the Rare style, particularly Diddy Kong Racing and Banjo-Kazooie.

I don't particularly like Banjo-Kazooie music, it's a bit dingy-bingy for me.
That Final Battle theme would be awesome if it was done with an electric guitar, imagine it, imagine it's greatness.

According to Expert Gamer's nearly flawless B-K guide, Rusty Bucket Bay is the hardest level in B-K. I semi-agree... although I didn't find any of the levels in that game TOO hard to beat... after the first time, that is.

I personally like the Rare musics. Although I'm a fan of castle themes, myself. Don't know why.

Fifth you are exactly right. I have found that every single song in Banjo-Kazooie is a variation of Teddy Bears' Picnic. Some are more obvious arrangements than others.

Grant Kirkhope "composed" the Banjo-Kazooie music.
I haven't heard anything by him yet, because I haven't downloaded that file yet.
Personally, I like Dave Wise best of the Rare composers.
Although, I haven't heard much of the others.

Now this is my kind of topic!  Some of my absolute favorite tunes are:
SMB2 Theme,
DKC2: Mining Malancholy (very sweet), Bramble Scramble, Castle, Credits.  The music in this game from David Wise totally rools!
STH2: Chemical Plant, Mystic Mine
Sonic & Knuckles: Battery Ship
Sonic Adventure: Twinkle Park, Twinkle Cart, Twinkle Cart Circuit, Red Mountain (hoo!), "It doesn't Matter"
Sonic Adventure 2: "That's The Way I Like It!", Space Wall
A bunch more that I might add later

And then there's catchy little songs from Mario Party games.  And I too also love Cool Like Sunglass.  That was a simple yet brilliant remix of the world 1 map.  I should play some more games to hear some more music, but then, who knows, I might buy as many tracks as CW or Watoad!

I'm looking forward to hearing the Dr. Mario remix in DDR next month because everyone keeps saying how awesome it is.  I can't wait for WTMK to record that song.

Speaking of music, I'm taking an exploring music class in college and I can't help but feel bad that there's no video game music!  Hopefully someday it will get popular enough to show up in a class.  Like when great musicians start playing SMB or make music for games.  Oh wait...

Watoad, why do you keep changing your signature so often?  Ha ha!  "StrongBad, you just 'cartwheeled' over some of my buses!  That's like... not even possible!"

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Thank you for naming "Mining Melancholy," Y. Rex! That track is sorely missing from the official (U.S.) soundtrack, and I never thought to look for it before because I didn't know what it was called. But I found it and more at some site I hadn't heard of before (even though it's hosted by ClassicGaming X_x). Yay! :)

My sig doesn't change all that often, methinks. The quote of Bubs that you mention is an old one, maybe three or four sigs ago.

Yeah, why didn't they include that song?  Good grief, that's like a ho-ho without the cream filling!  TMK without Deezer.  Nintendo without Mario!

I have a few questions to ask regarding VG music and I wonder if anyone can answer them.

v- numbers, oh no!
1. How come the Pokemon cartoons have music from the games but other VG anime shows don't?

2. Why does Japan get more songs in DDR:MM than USA? (I may never shut up about that game unless I get it)

I like Koji Kondo, Naoki Maeda, Noubo Uematsu and Tommy Tallarico. I listen to game music from the old school nes days to the Sony Playstation. My favorite game music has to be either Bust A Groove or Super Mario or The Legend Of Zelda
