Video Game Chat / Re: Small Text
« on: October 31, 2011, 02:15:55 PM »
You'd think someone would take a few minutes to check out how a game looks on an old small CRT screen (for those who hadn't upgraded yet) before shipping a game. The XNA thing for XBox 360 even has recommendations for where to put text (and probably other items) so there's no risk of them being cut off on old TVs (the "title area" I think).

I remember with old N64 games (or at least Turok 2), low resolution would make the HUD items big (health, ammo, etc.) and high resolution would make them small. But then, that was with a game option to switch between the two, as opposed to making the game always run in high resolution.

But yeah, I'm getting annoyed with how text is getting smaller on newer devices. Looking at one of the newer Macs is disorienting at first because there's miles of space and the text is on the small side. I've also seen DVDs where the subtitles were small enough that I had to get real close to the TV to see them (and I have a mild case of nearsightedness). Given subtitles are just text laid on top of the movie, shouldn't it A) use a look and size determined by the DVD player so you get a consistent appearance among different DVDs, and B) have an option somewhere to change how big the subtitles are?

Front. But more often the thing that gets me angry is if the roll's to my left instead of my right. This is in contrast to the paper towel roll where I like the new rolls to go off to the left instead of the right. I'm just all mixed up when it comes to which hand I prefer for different things.

It's 1. It's 1. Darn it the answer is 1. Operations in parentheses are always handled first. (as for the linked video which I didn't watch, the answer should be 2)

People will ask whether the equation is poorly written, or ambiguous, or why TI-whatever calculators give the wrong answer. You know what, I don't care anymore. It seems people look for any reason to avoid that unflinching rule that parentheses are dealt with first. Including changing 2(3) to 2 * 3 and then claiming that since multiplication has the same precedence as division, that we should go left to right. The problem there is that the parentheses were downgraded to multiplication. I strongly believe that 2(3) = (2 * (3)), not 2 * 3. Here's a better example, let's change that 3 to y. We have 2y. That's (2 * y), not 2 * y. Therefore the equation is 6 / 2y. If you think the answer to that is 3y, I weep for you.

This should also teach you to put everything in parentheses when dealing with a TI-whatever calculator. It's probably giving the wrong answer because it can't see 2(3) as (2 * (3)), or because it thinks the wrong behavior is more intuitive.

My birthday's today, I'm 26.

This is not my cake, it's the only relevant thing I could find:

Was going to pick 7 but decided to be random, so I picked 4. Darn it.

Finally, good real Garfield comics!

It's getting harder to come across good random ones (attach'd).

Mario Chat / Re: Most Underrated Mario Game
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:28:04 PM »
Any games I may have nominated for being underrated have already been said. Loved Tetris Attack (the only way you'd get me to play Panel de Pon in any form. If videogames had slap-on skin packs to replace a set of characters with another, I'd use Yoshi characters every time). Wario's Woods was a favorite back in the day for how crazy things would get later on, and the first game where I had a crush on Birdo (and hey, Toad got some recognition). And of course the first Wario Land. The later Wario Lands may be tighter and feel better, but the first game had more adventure and a sense of whimsy that the later games seem to throw out.

For a few games I didn't see in my quick scan of the thread:

- Mario and Wario: Decent puzzler, released only in Japan yet is perfectly understandable.
- Yoshi's Cookie: I loved this game for the Yoshi focus. Might not be as enjoyable as Tetris Attack, but still a good time.
- Mario's Picross: Love love love it. Picross is awesome. Why on earth didn't people pick up on it sooner? Screw Sudoku, screw it to heck - I want Picross.

Also, while I enjoyed Yoshi's Story and consider the "Tower Climb" stage to be the closest I've been to Yoshi nirvana (lovely music, Yoshi gliding on a leaf, particularly easy to run a lot in this stage to have Yoshi breathe heavily), it's the incredibly annoying between-worlds music and overall heavy kid slant and Yoshi humming ALL THE TIME which scares me away. I bought it because I was a Yoshi supporter. I later gave it away.

This entire site (links to classic "Awww"s, there's also newest Awwws and a search feature).

For this thread I'd nominate this little kitten.

*appears* Did someone say Star Fox?

It was okay, but I LOL'd at Falco's line, so I lost.

*checks some sites to see what was released in 2001*

It's hard to pick a favorite, you know. My favorite would be Final Fantasy X, that's one of my favorite RPGs and it was a Final Fantasy I could finally get into. Turn-based combat, beautiful graphics, different camera angles in battle, Auron.

Other candidates I see:
-- Silent Hill 2. That game was actually pretty good. Walking on a street, pitch black, loud industrial sounds for music, static on the radio...
-- Smash Bros. Melee. Enjoyed that immensely and it was my favorite GameCube game for a while. Nintendo fans are likely to choose this one.

2001 was also the year of Mario Kart Super Circuit, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, Ico, Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto III, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Civilization III, and Metal Gear Solid 2, and Halo.

Well they released Cho Aniki on Virtual Console in America for some unexplained reason, so I'm not surprised anymore.

*looks up Otomedius, eyes bug out* That's not anti-nostalgia. That's ShadowBrian's dream game.

yeah, I'm pretty sure I lost. Also, can't have Adventure Time without its brother Regular Show.
