Title: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light (& Bravely Default) (& Bravely Second)
Post by: Weegee on January 22, 2012, 02:00:47 AM
Anyone else have this somewhat overlooked RPG? It's by no means perfect, but it's good enough that I recently bought a (used) second copy. To quote one bad nizzle,

Mind you, it borrows a LOT of themes and gameplay elements from NES-era FF games, especially FFIII. It feels like a remake of a Final Fantasy title that never existed. If you want to experience the game without actually playing it, I highly recommend this LP ("Let's Play") of it (http://www.rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=51865). Even if you're not interested in FF:4HoL, Crooked Bee's narration makes for an immensely entertaining read (provided that you're okay with some foul language and the community's general disdain for JRPGs).

Square Enix has announced a very Engrish sequel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGxPdef8av0), but there's a significant chance it will never see a North American release.

I thought it was worthy of roman numeral, actually. : )

It easily is, but doing so would have upset the series' PS3-owning, graphicswhoring fanbase.

The opening image of the almost nude young girl with big thighs and an anime face is freaky.

It'll probably warrant the game an E10+ rating. The Japanese would say the same of a fully-clothed mature woman with a realistic face.

Anyways, I'm currently in the process of maxing out 4HoL's battle counter. 4000 fights down, 6000 to go. Fortunately, the game's Auto Mode setting makes it possible to accumulate wins by applying weight to the D-pad.

Yeah, Square Enix would never dare grace a portable system's graphically-inferior series entry with a full-scale roman numeral.

Fans of FF spinoff series and Dragon Quest are far less averse to that sort of thing.

I think you're just making [dukar] up.

I'm just going by what I've seen from FF fans on 4chan.

Don't FF fans get all whiny when the numbered entries to the series are multiplatform

Don't FF fans get all whiny when...anything involving FF occurs?

A new trailer for Bravely Default: Where the Fairy Flies in today's Nintendo Direct revealed the characters' English names, Christ-awful voice acting, and more pretty graphics. The game has proven so popular in Japan that it's been re-released with additional content (which we'll get by default), and a sequel has been confirmed for an unknown date.

I challenge you to find a more effeminate male Square Enix character than the dude on the right.

Kuja.

Every male character as rendered by Amano.

Interesting how BD seems to have taken off, while 4HoL barely made a ripple.

Well, I played the demo. That is to say, I spent 20 hours maxing the characters' levels and jobs as well as completing all the tasks.

It reminds me more of the DS remakes of FFIII and FFIV, but still good.

And the game ended up being censored

A double-whammy: At least one character had her age bumped up from 15 to 18, and their wardrobes were brought up to modest Christian standards:

Got the collector's edition. Airy is the sexiest fetus-sized thing I've ever seen.

EDIT: "Hardcore" gamers be warned, this is the type of game that can be cheesed very easily.

This sums up the game pretty well:

130 hours in, I'm about four-fifths of the way through my first playthrough. Four will be required to see all the cutscene variations.

I know this isn't the best place for the context of my question, but I think it's the most likely to get a response so...

What do you think is the best game to start my 7-year-old daughter on to get her interested in Final Fantasy?  I tried III (VI), but she got bored a few minutes in.

Tough call. FFIV, at least the DS port, is more engaging, but I doubt she'd understand unless she has the reading comprehension of a seventh-grader.

You could play some Crystal Chronicles with her. It's not super reading-intensive, and is a lot of fun to co-op.

II. Get Minwu at the start of the game, grind Teleport to about level 3 or 4, use it on the Captains in Fynn, win Toad tomes from them, baleful polymorph all hostiles for the entire thing. Blood and violence not necessary.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I think I'm going to start her with Secret of Mana if I can ever figure out how to access my Wii VC games on Wii U.

Assuming you've done a Wii Transfer, then you should be able to find all your Wii stuff in the "Wii Menu" option on the Wii U home screen.

Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii.

Some are there, but I have hundreds of VC games.  Of course the old copies on the SD card can't play because they were associated with my old Wii.

The problem is that the shop says it can't connect to the internet and I can't figure out how to get to the setting to make it connect to the internet.  The Wii U connects fine (wired).

100% completion get. It only took four playthroughs and 290 hours.

Bravely Second is every bit as good as BD, with less repetition with less repetition with less repetition.

I heard the story wasn't as good, and was the weak point of the game.

Bought it anyway. I haven't started it yet, though, because I haven't finished the last one. Whoops!

Yeah, the story and characters aren't quite as good, especially if you don't sift through the mountains of optional dialogue.
