Title: Advertisements on TMK
Post by: MaxVance on June 07, 2007, 01:07:39 PM
Have you ever clicked on the banner ads at the top of TMK or the Fungi Forums? If so, which ones? I had clicked on them a few times when they first appeared after the move to KonTek, and I will still click on any particularly ridiculous-sounding ads. (Some of them almost remind me of spam that I've gotten.)

Nope, but that's only because I'm using a layout that doesn't include ads. :P

I occasionally click them because I think it earns TMK more money that way.

I clicked on some of them just for money reasons, but when I was younger and expanding my music library, I followed an ad that was to a small web site that had a bit of game music on it. Not a lot, though. It made me wonder how they ever scrounged up the money to buy an advertisement.

I don't see any ads whatsoever, usually, because of Firefox and an ad-related extension.

Hooray for not-horrid browsers and add-ons. I never see 'em either.

Here's an example of what I consider to be a "ridiculous-sounding" ad:

Mario is also the name of a music artist.  This can make eBay searches annoying.

The heck? What a stupid ad.

Way back when TMK was on ClassicGaming, I clicked on an ad for a site that happened to be a Pokémon forum. I'm still a member on there, over...3? 4? years later.

Not really. I haven't seen any ads on TMK since I put those URLs in that part of my command line that blocks stuff.

I was seriously not aware that there were ads again.

I just add the "Super" To all my searches concerning Mario, I never pay attention to ad's, no one should!

I don't care how stupid or irrelevant they are, as long as they keep the site free and fast. And aren't, ya know, adult-oriented.

Wow.  I forgot there were ads.

I sort of feel bad now for not making TMK some money with my clicks...

I clicked on one once.  I believe the site sold Nintendo T'shirts.

I used to occasionally click adds, but since I was annoyed by the expanding ads I've had them blocked.

That doesn't happen anymore. I agree that the ads IGN (IGN > GameSpy > ClassicGaming > TMK) used were annoying.

Who clicks on ANY banner ad, anyway? (what I want to know is who the dingalings are that actually do those "__ the __ and get a free __" things)

Even if the ad is for something interesting, I don't click it anyway, mostly out of fear of pop-ups, viruses and my own guilt over doing it in the first place.

Guilt? No one is harmed by your clicking. Clicking on an ad does not require you to purchase or take part in whatever is being advertised. And it's easy to avoid popups (close them, or use a browser with a popup blocker) and viruses (don't download anything).

I honestly don't click ads. They are just 'not there' when I look at a site, brain just ignores them. Even though, I believe it is important to have them if they are useful (help pay for the site costs) but otherwise, yea... the ads aren't that bad, I just don't click them.

Agreed. Here is all I have to say about it.
1. Don't like pop-ups? Simple. Don't click on ads.
2. Really interested in ads?  go ahead and click on them. Ignore pop-ups about
"U JUST WON A FREE WII* LOLZ
*$1,000,000 Shipping cost"
3.  Honestly, I just don't understand some ads, like the one mentioned earlier.
5. There is no #4.

(The joys of Firefox!)

One word. VIRUSES. You don't have to download any thing for them to install themselves. And if not viruses then cookies, adware, you name it.

Cookies can easily be blocked and spyware can be avoided (again, don't download anything).

This isn't a problem if you don't use IE.  And Google wouldn't allow sites with viruses to advertise anyway.

I'm very protected. I have Mcafee, Norton, AVG and Windows Defender which may make my computer
one of the most protected on the forums.
(Can anyone tell me why my spelling is always so presise?)

What I wonder is why you break your lines so much. In some of your posts, you've split sentences into two or thre lines when they could easily fit into one.

Edit: Holy crap, I forgot that I had made this poll.

I just use the firefox adblock plugin.
