Title: Minecrack
Post by: Turtlekid1 on December 28, 2010, 01:44:20 PM
Anyone play Minecraft (http://www.minecraft.net/) besides ShadowBrain and myself?  If you don't, you're missing out.  Anyway, I figured I should make a thread about it here, to discuss the game and post pixel art and buildings and stuff, lest The Pointless Topic be overrun by Minecraft stuff.

Also this:

My interest has waned over time, especially after I died in lava in the Nether with all my armor on, but I might get back into it soon. In any case, I'd certainly be a little more into it if I wasn't running it on a not-necessarily-gaming-friendly laptop.

I hate lava so much.  But it is necessary to produce obsidian, which looks cool.  If it didn't take so long to mine, it'd make a prime building material, because it's also highly resistant to explosions.  Of course, I generally play on Peaceful because I hate having to dodge all the mobs.

Nah, I meant Survival servers. But whatever.
I'm a moderator at this server (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1025&t=114767&p=1670534#p1670534).

i wish i had sound on minecraft :(

I'd like to see a server with mobs on and PvP off.  Seems like one would have enough trouble with the mobs to worry about other players, and vice versa.

I don't frequent any Survival servers, although I do have Beta, so I probably could if I cared to.

Needs a buddy system so you can add usernames and see if any of your friends are online and if so, what they're doing in the game.

Update today, everybody. It includes all the good things in life, such as squids, red sheep, Indiana Jones traps, blue sheep, white trees, yellow sheep, black trees, pink sheep, getting bones, green sheep, bone dust, purple sheep, sugar, orange sheep, cake, grey sheep, lapis lazuli, black sheep, and bug fixes.

I hear that sheep also come in lots of new colors.

Yeah, i only name a few features of the update. One I should have mentioned was the note blocks, even though I won't be able to use them.

Post by: Turtlekid1 on January 15, 2011, 07:58:49 AM
I'm not really sure what to do with this game.  Either it's too easy and boring after a while on Peaceful, or too broken on any other difficulty.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Ninjap00 on January 15, 2011, 11:23:23 AM
How's it broken on any difficulty that's not peaceful?
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Turtlekid1 on January 15, 2011, 11:29:36 AM
I can't go out more than half a day's distance from my spawn point for fear of getting killed, because it's certainly not possible to fight mobs for any extended length of time.  It severely limits the exploration factor in the game.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Ninjap00 on January 15, 2011, 01:22:12 PM
You sound like you've never tried using weapons or armor. Anyway, I usually have the game on Peaceful for the first few days just to build a basic house and to gather some materials, then I turn the difficulty up and go on from there.

Post by: ShadowBrain on January 16, 2011, 10:46:40 PM
Yeah, I've gotten back into it the last day or two. Once again, I'd enjoy it a lot more if it didn't run like crap on my laptop.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Turtlekid1 on January 16, 2011, 11:08:48 PM
Yeah, my computer is fairly fast and I still can't feasibly have the draw distance set past "Normal."  And even then, it gets somewhat framey.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: ShadowBrain on January 17, 2011, 08:55:35 AM
I've decided to deal with the bad framerate and run it on Normal, because it freezes up for a couple seconds every now and then no matter what the render distance is.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Turtlekid1 on February 15, 2011, 08:35:52 AM
So I tried everything to boost my framerate: setting the process' affinity to one core, setting its priority to "High," putting all the in-game settings down to the bare minimum, using my High Performance power plan... then last night I switched my default graphics processor to the NVIDIA High Performance option.  Runs like a dream, even with the farthest render distance and "Fancy" graphics.

(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fu%2F16219696%2FMinecraft%2520Advanced%2520V8.00%2Fneutralcreeper.png&hash=37c0faa274353e50cb505c2bb774c5e0)

(Pretty sure this is fake, but I still grinned when I saw it.)
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Ninjap00 on February 17, 2011, 06:09:55 AM
I get 15fps on Short render distance.
Anyways, that's just a different texture, not fake.

The 1.5 update this week sounds like it'll get me back into Minecraft.

Good.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Turtlekid1 on April 19, 2011, 10:20:58 AM
1.5 is out!

The ladders have been tweaked.  You can't climb ladders with gaps anymore, but you'll get two ladders from every set of sticks instead of just one, so it balances out (although you'll still have to place new ladders in existing gaps).

I haven't seen any weather effects yet, but my base is in a desert biome, and apparently those don't get precipitation of any kind.

Post by: ShadowBrain on April 23, 2011, 10:51:45 AM
On one hand, I saw some squids for the first time, and the game actually does seem to be running a little smoother at Normal framerate than it used to. On the other hand, I saw this (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a335/Trevornater/SWEETJESUS.jpg?t=1303575882).

EDIT: Also, my Achievements and Statistics got reset. I mean, they were only for a few minutes of work, but that's still annoying.

Maps, tall grass, Nether in SMP, and way too many bug fixes to list (http://notch.tumblr.com/post/5775170768/the-changelist-for-1-6).

Coming sometime this week.

I ran around my base a little bit last night to see if there were any immediately noticeable changes. Ironically, the only thing I noticed is that my furnace is still burning with nothing inside of it, which I thought was something that got fixed.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Turtlekid1 on May 27, 2011, 08:01:32 AM
The only thing about tall grass and desert shrubs are that they won't appear in areas you've already explored.  So you're out of luck if you don't have any seeds yet and want some.

Personally, I think (considering maps crash the server I play on) that Multiplayer Nether has been the most substantial update.  Spent all afternoon and all night yesterday (and a small part of this morning, technically) building myself a sinister-looking castle over a lava lake.  It took me all of my cobblestone and a good amount of glass and Netherrack, and I still need to put in ~30 iron doors, but so far, so good.

Post by: Turtlekid1 on May 28, 2011, 11:39:49 AM
I know, right?  How ironic that the bug fix update needs so many additional patches to work out all the new bugs that were introduced.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: WarpRattler on May 28, 2011, 12:26:19 PM
It's not ironic. Bug fixes introducing numerous other bugs is pretty normal, especially for a beta.

Classic tends to run a lot slower than Survival, for some reason (i.e. I get 20-35fps in most SMP servers, while most Creative servers give me 10-20fps at nearly the same settings).
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: bobbysq1337 on July 05, 2011, 04:30:47 PM
Maybe because there are more people who play Classic than Beta. My reasioning is that when I play Beta, I feel like it's slower than Classic single player.

Well, I suppose we all should have seen this coming--ever since that glowy-eyed, heroic sal****er fellow popped up, there's been an oddly substantial amount of Minecraft creepypasta, so it's only fair that there be a nod to everyone's favorite supernatural voyeur. Heck, might as well go all the way and add bloody baby heads that cause people to vomit and/or commit suicide.

Are you talking about Slenderman or Herobrine?

Herobrine first, then Slenderman. Also, lol at another unnecessary censorship of Britain's pet curse word.

Hey, just so everyone who doesn't have the game knows, they're doing a deal this weekend where if you buy Minecraft you get a second copy to give to a friend.

You guys, enter "Fluttershy" as a seed name.  Gives you a cool mountainous/watery map.

Anyway, do it before 1.8, because world generation will be changed up when the update hits.

Then you can give yourself a second copy or pretend that you gave it to a friend.

Hell yeh! I was just having another one of my Minecraft binges yesterday. Here's how it goes:

1) Run around the mine(s) I already have, find a bunch of awesome crap
2) Start exploring aboveground, far from my base
3) Die a cheap death
4) Respawn, all my stuff is gone, I have no idea where the hell I just was
5) Lose interest, do whatever it is I really should've been doing with my time

Fortunately, 1.8 should revitalize my interest like nothing else!

EDIT: Huh, I can't connect to my account...

Wait, I managed a workaround by redownloading directly from Minecraft.net. Anyway...

--Endermen are a little... underwhelming. Their noises seem unfitting and generic, and the purple sparkles are anything but menacing.
--The food system seemed good at first, but now it's starting to kind of **** me off. Oh well, at least it's getting me more into farming...
--What's the green bar for, anyway? In any case, those little pellets kind of dampen the game immersion for me.

-I guess Endermen's sound effects are placeholders.  That, at least, should be fixed later.  I think.
-Hahaha, serves ya right for not building a food supply! (I haven't had any issues with the hunger bar yet, and food is stackable now, so I can't imagine it would be that bad)
-That's the Experience bar.  Fill it up, gain a level.  Stats haven't been implemented yet, is the only thing.  So for now it has no purpose.

[Leveling] has no purpose.
You underestimate the intrinsic value of making a number go up, even if it has no gameplay relevance.

Anyway, the adventure mode and related content are supposed to get me to finally buy Minecraft, but we'll see about that.

Yeah, but... what number?

Anyway, I'm honestly seeing more flaws than improvements at this point, but I had a little moment today that made it all worthwhile: Riding in a boat at twilight in the rain, as I neared the welcoming torches of one of my oldest forts, which I'd unwittingly wrapped around to after months of blissful transience.

You say this as if the numbers in question need to be visible (Pokémon) or even exist.

If a number goes up in a videogame, and nobody is around to see it, does it make a sound?

Still playing.  Sort of.  That might not be the case now that the weekend is over and I'm back at school doing homework and such.

Anyway, the update is cool, I guess.  I haven't really seen much of the new Nether content, and the crappy desert island I spawned on means I haven't experienced any new biomes or structures, either.

I got a new laptop, so I've finally had the chance to indulge myself properly into the game instead of walking around short sighted all the time.

The welcoming party to the nether was probably the most enlightening to see after the trainwreck of trying to transverse it on my old computer, as a fortress had spawned right in front of my face on the first step inside.

I still haven't seen a fortress, Nether or otherwise.  I wish I would, too, because I really need a Blaze Rod.

Here's what I do, still: Load my world, explore recklessly until I die, then lose interest and come back a few weeks later.
Title: Re: Minecrack
Post by: Turtlekid1 on December 19, 2011, 09:10:25 AM
Something tells me that if you were a little less reckless and cut out some of that "die" part, you might not lose interest quite as quickly.  Or maybe quicker.  I dunno.

My map has been pretty easy to explore so far because I spawned in a sort of archipelago and had basically nothing but ocean around me in every direction for almost as far as I could see on my first map (as in, the item, not the world I was in).  So just a quick boat trip around the region and the map was mostly filled.

Tonight I finally located a stronghold, gathered enough eyes of endor to activate the portal, armed myself to the teeth with resources, and jumped into the portal.

No more than 10 seconds had passed before I dug a brief hole to surface and caught sight of the Enderdragon, who had immediately dive bombed and knocked me about 20 miles away from the floating island into oblivion.

This is why no one goes to The End without creative mode or hacks.

Mojang will live stream the creation of a game on Humble Bundle, and you can vote on the polls to influence the genre and theme of the game they will make.
Humble Bundle Mojam (http://www.mojang.com/2012/02/15/humble-bundle-mojam/)

I voted for  a Candy Land FPS, myself. Unfortunately, it seems most want an RTS game.

With my new computer, I got 600 fps.
On multiplayer.
WELCOME TO OVERKILL LAND.

Also, I transferred over my .minecraft folder to the new computer through a NAS and it ran into a few problems because I named it "bobby .minecraft"(I thought I might have had to back up more), so when I removed the "bobby", Windows apparently thought the ".minecraft" was a file extension (somehow). I added a period after the name and then removed it to stop the problem.
