It's pretty apparent that Glorb's "scream" image is the result of a tactfully-placed blotch or two on the photo, and Frank Zappa could never give me anything besides a case of the warm fuzzies. Anyways, here's what one gets by taking the easy way out by searching "freaky" into Google Images:

Lost to Weegee's first picture. I always wondered what the freaky thing in the second picture was... and I just found it.
It's too easy for this thread to turn into posts of a bunch of screamers, so try to avoid that. That said, I still have to post this one image that scared me from "The 11th Hour" (some think it's scary, others think it's funny):

Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that the thing's face is like twice the length of a normal human face, and there's a bunch of dark splatters on the wall.
And for the record, I came very close to losing to Weegee's first pic and PW's pic.

Also, it turns out it's from a scary-ass experimental film called Begotten, which looks like it'd put Eraserhead to shame in terms of nightmare fuel. So, it's not a freaky crime scene photo like I'd thought at first.

Here os a brief plot synopsis of the 1991 film Begotten, from which that sreamy image was taken:
"The film opens with a robed, profusely bleeding "God" disemboweling himself, with the act ultimately ending in his death. A woman, Mother Earth, emerges from his remains, arouses the body, and impregnates herself with his semen. Becoming pregnant, she wanders off into a vast and barren landscape. The pregnancy manifests in a fully grown man whom she leaves to his own devices.
The "Son of Earth" meets a group of faceless nomads who seize him with what is either a very long umbilical cord or a rope. The Son of Earth vomits organic pieces, and the nomads excitedly accept these as gifts. The nomads finally bring the man to a fire and burn him.
"Mother Earth" encounters the resurrected man and comforts him. She seizes the man with a similar umbilical cord. The nomads appear and proceed to rape her. Son of Earth is left to mourn over the lifeless body. A group of characters appears, carry her off and dismember her, later returning for Son of Earth. After he, too, is dismembered, the group buries the remains, planting the parts into the crust of the earth. The burial site becomes lush with flowers."

It's sad that I laughed at Weegee's pic. I think it's the way the hands are spread out. Interpreted the caption as not "14 seconds before it rips your face off", but rather "it's so stupid it takes 14 seconds to figure out how to use a door".

According to Wikipedia and IMDB, the 2010 film will apparently be based on but deviate slightly from the plot of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Gathering from the fact that it'll be set ten years after the books, it's as though the titular character will be re-living her past adventures, only with digitally-manipulated individuals serving as replacements for her once-loveable acquaintances.

Yeah, that's how GameStop does used games. They also sell used copies of main-series Pokémon GBA games and Katamari Damacy for more than they cost when they came out.

I bought Katamari Damacy brand new in it's original wrapper for $19.99 at GameStop. They had several copies for the same price that were all brand new; not shrink wrapped resales. I had previously sold my copy when the new one came out, but later went back to buy it again.

Jesus, dude, I don't know if "funny" is the way I'd describe it. The moron juggling bowling balls seems like a setup for comedy of epic proportions, and then it ends in actualy unfunny tragedy.
EDIT: And the video's even worse, since the *******s in the background laugh for a good five seconds after the kid gets knocked down until the blood starts pooling aroud his/her head.

I sad "almost". Besides, it obviously fake. Notice how it skips when the bowling ball goes high in the air and again when it supposedly hits her head. Also notice how high it bounces. The video was viral marketing for a Samsung video phone. Pen and BBQ skewer juggling videos wear also used in the campaign. http://www.ragingartists.com/2007/11/ There's a high quality video of the bowling bowl juggling on YouTube, but I can't find it at the moment.

I've heard about fifty different explanations of the video's "fakeness", all of them from self-styled experts, including:
. The video and/or audio "visibly skips" at the point of impact
. The sound of impact does not match what a bowling ball landing on a toddler's head would sound like
. The bowling ball would not have bounced that way (which is bullcrap; bowling balls do bounce, and often pretty high depending on how high it was dropped from)
. There was no blood/the amount of blood was wrong
. The kid's head didn't explode into hundreds of gibs
. The announcer did not yell BOOM HEADSHOT
. The kid is "obviously a doll"
. The kid is "obviously a midget"
. The girl at the beginning is a terrible CGI effect (this has been proven; her hair is visibly pixelated)
Even if the bowling balls were rubber and the kid was a midget, it's still a frighteningly realistic, totally unfunny attempt at edgy humor.

See this xkcd comic for why TVTropes is loathed (http://xkcd.com/609/). It's Wikipedia-addictive times 10. I love it, but don't go there if you have a project due. I had so many tabs open that no text could fit on any of them. Had to go to sleep and then wake up the next morning just to finish all the tabs I had. I propose that browser memory tests should test people browsing TVTropes.

"Lampshaded" is derived from the phrase "hanging a lampshade" on something, or whatever. Granted, I had never heard that before visiting TV Tropes, but an internal lingo is not a reason to criticize a website. Like I said, that would cover about 96% of all websites out there.

That one death page on TVTropes does explicitly mention near the top that there are spoilers. But you know on every other TVTropes page you're going to highlight the spoilers anyway.
I do like the idea that some tropes (okay, many of them) are named after characters or shows, so you automatically have some idea what they're referring to just by title. You probably have an idea what a Ralph Wiggum character would be. And if not, the trope name's highlighted so you can just click it to find out. Usually there's a picture to go along with it that explains the idea faster than the text does. And if you still have no clue what it is... just read a few of the examples. But then it's 5 hours later and you've forgotten what you were originally looking at.
Ditto for lampshading, never heard of it before. I still think it'd be better to define it more bluntly as "explicitly pointing out the trope." I don't really know what is meant by hanging a lampshade. I'd think of covering a lightbulb with that little frilly lamp cover. I wouldn't think of pointing a lamp or flashlight at something.
One of my favorite trope pages is Conspicuously Light Patch (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ConspicuouslyLightPatch), which is the tendency in cartoons to have a part of the background that's going to be used stand out like a sore thumb from the rest of the background. That and Made of Explodium (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MadeOfExplodium).

Internet memes attempt to create humor by taking something, be it a phrase, picture, facial expression, or concept, and saying, doing, or repeating it over and over again with occasional variations, on the off-chance that sooner or later, something funny will be produced.
Furthermore, these days internet memes are pretty much all completely forced; unlike concepts that evolved naturally into the public consiousness (for example, the Rickroll, which started as a surreal one-off joke), pretty much any internet meme you see today will have been started with the sole purpose of creating an internet meme.
Real humor doesn't rely on force-feeding you something over and over again to be considered funny. Real humor doesn't need to be spread to hundreds of people on 4chan or reach internet stardom to be considered successful.

I think part of it is just knowing there's gonna be something freaky in the thread, so chances are you'll scroll down slowly and get accustomed to whatever it is. It's best to show something freaky on the first post of a new page, or an animated GIF that changes to something freaky, or best of all, link to an image (preferably small so it pops up at once instead of slowly revealing itself. I think you turn off Progressive under JPEG settings for that to happen).
So your image would have been freakier if you had linked to it instead. Like so (http://www.barrettdesigns.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/harlequin.jpg).
After all, a link to an image is part of what made me lose to smiledog so long ago. Because you have no idea going in what you're going to see.

I already looked at a website that has a bunch of those kinds of photos. I'm immune.
According to some other forum thread, the freak-out bit of Dimps making Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is the opinion that Dimps sucks at making 2D Sonic levels, as opposed to Sonic Team not having made a full 2D Sonic game in forever. Opinions vary on whether it'd be better that Sonic Team makes the game or Dimps makes it. Opinions also seem to vary on what Dimps' involvement was with a few of the handheld Sonic games, which would help in declaring Dimps either a good fit or bad fit.
Personally I'm willing to say Dimps is a bad choice just because of their funny name. I'm so used to any Sonic game being accompanied by "Sonic Team" that having any other developer doesn't seem legitimate.
Wonder what the public opinion is of Traveller's Tales, who I mention because they have (or used to have) another logo I like. They're the guys who do the Lego Everything franchises.

Grab VLC, change its video output to color ASCII art, and you'll have TEXTp mode for any video you happen to have. I just wish you could change the text size and window size to give it much better resolution. Without being able to do so, the video looks pretty lousy.

Sounds like one of those "omg this video game is haunted and mario turns to the screen and says you're next!!!" creepypastas. It's not scary unless you're a big fan of that particular thing and are intimately familar with it, and even then, the premise is kind of lame.
Although that would make for an interesting actual game, maybe one on DS or something. Starts off like a normal [X genre] game, kind of cutesy and oldschool, but then in turns out the game itself is haunted or whatever and pulls little Eternal Darkness-style fourth-wall scares. Like Eversion, basically, but the horror is a meta thing.

The only comment on that article sums up my thoughts perfectly:
The problem with the 3DS is more then just a lack of good software. The 3D gimmick doesn’t stay interesting very long and doesn’t work if you can’t stay perfectly still (such as playing in a car). So people turn it off and leave it off.
With it off, the 3DS is just a slightly fancier DS with VERY poor battery life. The system is a major blunder in the mobile space for a company that’s dominated handheld gaming for as long as most people can remember.
Had Nintendo never released the 3DS, they wouldn't be experiencing this loss. It's simple as that.

Even without the 3D stuff, the 3DS is far more powerful than the regular DS, and that contributes a great deal to the lower battery life.
Stop focusing on the gimmicks of the hardware and using them as an excuse to ignore everything else about the system. It makes you sound like a Sony fanboy circa November 2006 trying to defend his $600 console purchase.

What can I say, the 3DS is ahead of its time, way too powerful for a handheld and battery life; how long could a battery that small truly last for the CPU hogging 3Ds? I'm also sure the gender-detection scared a lot of people off. Also, Nintendo doesn't care about games anymore, and I can see the perspective on that.

Please justify that. I think Nintendo has some great looking games coming. If you'd said Nindtendo doesn't care about "new" games anymore I could agree with you. Still, Paper Mario and SMB games coming to 3DS are must haves for me. The price drop is almost enough for me now, but I'm trying to wait on the next generation with better battery life.

And the GameCube was beaten by the Xbox and absolutely demolished by the PS2, so I hope that's as far as the analogy goes.
That said, now that the price is dropping, I might give the 3DS a look in before the Christmas season. Star Fox 64, Mario Kart and the Virtual Console are just too appealing to knock back.

Admittedly, there are some good games on the way coming out for the 3DS that look all-the-more promising like the New Paper Mario, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus (poor neglected series) and some reiterations of older games, but I'm still not tempted to buy a 3DS not only because too much shovel-ware for my liking is out already, but due to other other factors I mentioned before. Maybe battery life will be reasonable soon. I'm waiting.
I am also disappoint at Crapcom for pulling Mega Man Legends 3, which was a title that may have swayed me more into buying a 3DS.

If just the existence of shovelware seriously affects whether or not you'll buy a system, you should probably have never started playing video games. Shovelware has been around on home consoles since at least the Atari 2600 (to say nothing of home computers), and the only console I can think of that doesn't suffer from it had other major problems to make up for it.
(Name the console and win a prize! But not really.)
Furthermore, can we please have a moratorium on the use of the phrase "shovelware"? Some of the things that are shrugged off as shovelware now would've been AAA titles twenty years ago, but because they're obscure/Asian/not Call of Duty or Madden, the shovelware label comes out again and again. In a lot of ways it has about as much meaning as "hipster" or, in Weegee's case, "weeaboo"; here it seems to mean "games I'm not interested in."
And the battery life is perfectly reasonable. Do you people just never charge your systems or something? Do you complain that your cell phone's battery life is too low when you talk on it for six hours straight and it dies?

The mere existence of shovelware doesn't make me dislike a system, but when that shovelware is successful (as has been the case with Nintendo's latest systems), it begats other shovelware (or at least cheaply-made/designed games--I'll agree that "shovelware" isn't 100% objective, but I'm confident I could point it out on a Wal-Mart shelf without fail), which can crowd out more quality titles from a business perspective (See: Why stuff like Operation Rainfall ends up existing).
Meanwhile, I'm just not buying a 3DS because it would likely suck way more time and money out of my forthcoming time at college than I can afford. Also, I've heard enough about the tech issues and games lineup to hold out indefinitely.

To be fair, though, a boxart featuring a sexy 12-year-old anime girl, a badass Matrix anime guy, a brooding white-haired anime guy, and an androgynous anime person in a beret with Japanese letters in front of them probably looks about as generic to Japaneses as a boxart featuring guns, planes, a gun-holder soldier guy guy, guns, and an ubisoft logo looks to Americans.

Well, when I said "cheaply made", I meant stuff like Chicken Shoot and anything with a "Z" in the name by Ubisoft. And I wasn't aware I was supposed to consider what those games would look like in multiple countries, although I suppose you're right.

CrossEyed, that's the point where you get into things like people liking particular artists and such. Like how I recommended the Devil Survivor games to a friend because the art for the games was done by the same person who did the art for an anime she liked.
...but yes, the Japanese cover for WarTech is pretty generic as well. It'd still stand out better over here than the box art we got, though. (In reality, it doesn't matter what the box art looks like for the Japanese version, because it's an Xbox 360 game and therefore no one was going to buy it in the first place. The Xbox 360 being a "filthy gaijin" game system and all.)
A better example for what I'm talking about - which in this case would be people liking artists and American covers being terrible - would be Atelier Rorona. The Japanese box had the title of the game and the title character standing in a town. Now, I really like the art for the current iterations of that series, so I'd probably buy that if I saw it and had a PS3...on the other hand, the US box has the title of the game and a wand. They removed the main character from the cover of the game because, again, retailers won't carry anime games.

I won't bother to directly respond to that remark, but I will say what it reminded me of: On my recent Alaskan cruise, I saw a father and son in complementing Angry Birds shirts, something which really bothered me for reasons I can't quite explain. Later, in Canada, a window display prominently featured Angry birds merchandise--fortunately, this was tempered somewhat by a few Mario-related items on the other side.

Well, assuming that there are other planets with liquid water (or a close enough analogue) and therefore beaches, that is probably more than the number of synapses in the human brain (of every human ever), so this is probably false.

This sentence is ambiguously phrased. Is "to survive" part of "I need you", or is it only part of "humans need water and food"? If the former, then it is kind of implying that he is not human (plausible).
It is possible that this can make sense, as it is theoretically possible for a human to live without either food or water, in common parlance. A human could only eat food without drinking anything, and if the food is moist enough, it could conceivable work. A human could also only drink water and get their nutrients from things not commonly considered food. I don't know about both, though. As long as he is not implying that he will literally not survive without her, this can make sense (although this begs the question of what he needs her for. The only thing that made me freak out about that vid was the lack of facts. The video is nearly complete bull[dukar]. Thousands were not killed. 28 people directly died from the radiation and several more died later probably from the radiation but not for sure. Rates of thyroid cancer in children rose somewhat. The pictures in the vid are completely unrelated to Chernobyl and some are probably Photoshopped horror images. There are not legions of deformed mutant children running around Ukraine. There is not "enough radioactive material to destroy Europe" prevented only by a decaying building. (And the music is a horrible choice for this vid, better suited to "dramatic" YTMNDs.)
So what's the actual effect of Chernobyl? A city got abandoned and thousands of people will eventually die of cancer who might not have otherwise. But you can't really tell specifically who those people are versus someone who got cancer "normally".

I wake up one morning to the most awful noise I have ever heard. A shrill, scratchy, warbling, pulsating siren whose volume is just on the edge of being painful. I run outside in my bathrobe to try to find the source of the noise, but it is directionless. It seems to be coming from all directions, everywhere. Standing there on my front lawn, I notice all my neighbors are out as well, many with hands pressed against their ears, some running around franticly like they have mosquitoes trapped in their ear wax. Business and commerce falls into chaos, as no one can communicate clearly over the deafening noise. Houses and businesses are retrofitted with soundproof walls, and this helps, but the noise still gets through. Few can afford the level of soundproofing necessary to totally silence it. Special "Soundproof Cafes" begin popping up everywhere, featuring soothing nature sounds and white-noise to counter the Noise that gets through the ultra-insulated walls. People begin to develop innovative new ways of communicating. Millions learn sign language. Others constantly wear earphones connected to tiny microphones, which they can swap with whoever they need to talk to. All music concerts but the loudest rock shows become obsolete. For the average working man, there is nowhere on earth he can go where he won't hear the Noise at least as loud as a muted trumpet. Years pass, and society rearranges itself. Slowly, people adapt. So last weekend I asked my 4chan people if they had any experience with just not caring and letting the world see your cuts, and I just wanted to update everyone who responded or read this post. By the way, thank you all so much for your responses/support, it really helped me decide how I was going to handle making my cuts/scars public.
So on the evening of 4/28 I saw BriGuys post while all of my roommates were home and two out of three of them were in my room. I don't remember exactly how we got on the topic, I think I was talking about my medication. But one of my roommates said to me, "You know, if there is anything you need to talk about, I'm here for you." And then I told both of them that there was actually something really personal that I wanted to talk to them about. But before I told them, I made them promise that they wouldn't judge me, or think that I was a freak for it. They promised, and I admitted to them that I had been cutting myself. It was really hard for me to get the words to leave my lips, but I knew that if I didn't say it then, I probably wouldn't say it for a while after that. One of them then said that they had a hunch about it after I started wearing the bandana around my wrist. Then she asked if she could see my cuts, and I was reluctant at first because it all felt so personal and I felt so ashamed and embarrassed... but I stuck out my arm and let her see.. and she held my arm in her hands, lightly touched my scabbed up cuts and then she looked at me and started crying and saying "Oh Allison...". And it made me so sad to see her cry about what I had been doing to myself. I wanted to cry because she was crying but I was still getting acquainted with my meds and for a while I couldn't cry about anything for some reason. So even though I felt sad that she was so upset, I couldn't show it.. and I just say there apologizing for making her sad. After a couple minutes she stopped crying and all three of us just talked about why I was doing it, the help that I'm getting and stopping in the future. A week or so later I had the same talk with my third roommate. She is really busy all the time and always has her boyfriend over when she's not busy, so I had to arrange a time to talk with her about it. All three of them were really understanding and none of them thought that I was a freak or crazy for doing what I do. It was such a big relief to finally get it off of my shoulders. I could finally walk around our living space with t-shirts on and not have to be dying under warm sweatshirts because I don't have any long sleeves. I told them that I wasn't ready to quit yet, but I wanted to come clean to them because I didn't want to be walking around with cuts on myself and freak them out.
As far as the public goes.. I have only had one incident so far. I was eating dinner at my university's dining hall with my roommates and our group of friends. It had been really warm that day and I decided to be brave and wear a flowy tank top. Well everyone was having their own little conversations, and one of the guys sitting next to me(who I sort of have a crush on) asked me "What happened to your shoulder?" The moment that he asked me I felt like my brain had exploded. I felt all of the blood drain from my face, my whole body got cold and I could feel a sheen of sweat all over me. It all seemed like it happened really fast, and I didn't even hear myself speak because I was in such a panic. But later on I asked my roommate what I had said and she told me that I told him "I'd rather not talk about it right now." And he had just said "Okay." in return. Later that day after dinner I texted him saying that I hadn't meant to seem rude, but that I was going through a lot of personal stuff and it didn't seem appropriate to talk about at the dinner table. I don't think that he realized the cuts were self-inflicted when he first asked, because when he texted me back he apologized and said he was so sorry for even bringing it up and that if he had known it was a sensitive topic he never would have said anything. I then told him that it was okay, and I should have known better and should have been prepared to be asked because I was wearing a tank top. He then told me that if I ever needed anything, he was always just right across the hall(he lives in the same building right across the hall from my room). After that incident, he hasn't said anything more about it to me, and continues to treat me the same as he used to. So I'm glad that he doesn't think I'm a freak.
My scabs on my arm and shoulder have all faded and turned to scars and are less "in your face," so I'm more comfortable wearing t-shirts and such out in public, and I haven't had anyone else ask me about them yet. I'm not cutting as much anymore, and I now only cut on my upper thigh because it's the only place no one will see for sure. I still get a lot of urges when something bad happens or I get really upset, but I think that deer BriGuy post is making it easier to distract myself or talk myself out of cutting when I get the urges.

I think I freaked some people out at the drugstore checkout. They were talking about the three girls that recently escaped their captor(s). I didn't say anything, but I think they noticed that I was only had three things in my cart. Wine. Laxative. Duct Tape. It didn't help that I was wearing a bright orange and blue bowtie and was facing away from the other making it look like I was staring at the condoms and avoiding eye contact with everyone else. It also didn't help that the store requires the birthday of the person you are picking medicine up for. I seemed to have a hard time recalling the day, but knew for certain that the year was 2006.

I don't know if it's FBI related, but yes. Some kind of pharmacy database. My wife is a pharmacy tech, and most pharmacies (not just Walmart, but quiet nearly every pharmacy) is on or has this database.
