Mario Chat / Re: Creeping Graphical Sameyness

I guess what you have to consider concerning the Paper Mario art shift is that it wasn't really clear what the vast majority of the enemies in Paper Mario's actual designs were prior to the original's release.  Besides a very few common enemies such as Goombas, Koopas, and the like, not many of the enemies had 3D models at the time, and many of the enemies hadn't appeared in a game for at least half a decade.

Take Buzzy Beetles, for example; I can't think of any game after All-Stars (although not a new game, it did implement some of the newer enemy designs and add some of its own) that had Buzzy Beetles in it, and what previously existing design do the Paper Mario Buzzy Beetles most closely resemble?  I'd say the SMAS-SMB ones, even if the palette's more reminiscent of SMAS-SMB3/SMW.  The only major difference is that PM's Buzzy Beetles don't have sclerae, but then again, neither does Mario.  When NSMB came around, it had the first official 3D rendering of a Buzzy Beetle (at the very least, the first in-game model), so I guess that could be a valid reason why they changed it in PM3DS, even if it doesn't resemble most in-game earlier designs.

I wish Nintendo would do that radical an art shift for a main-series platformer, complete with MK-ized photo-realistic backgrounds and the like.

In a similar vein to the Dry Bones pic in CE7's post,

>:(

I never cared for Buzzy Beetles' NSMB design, but changing the PM design to match it is indeed going way too far.

Oh; the grey bars at the bottom show how accurately you judged the color regions, derp.  Well, they were apparently even enough that I didn't notice they were of different heights.

Got a 12 as well; I think I did worst on the blue-greens.

Video Game Chat / Re: Best/Worst Controllers
« on: September 07, 2011, 02:00:18 PM »
I think I like the SNES and N64 controllers the best overall.

I can't think of a single thing I dislike about the SNES controller; it feels good in one's hand, the D-pad is excellent, the buttons have the perfect amount of sensitivity, and you can slide your finger across the D-pad and between buttons perfectly.
The GCN's analog stick is much better than the 64's (the cover's likelihood of coming off notwithstanding), but the button configuration is awful.
The N64's buttons aren't quite as nice as SNES's, but the analog stick and Z button placement make up for it.

I hate the placement the D-pad, sticks, and shoulder buttons on the Classic Controller (lack of a back-Z button more so than anything), and the buttons aren't anywhere near as smooth as the SNES's.  It's decent for SNES games, but subpar to every one of the original controllers in some way or another.

The original Spanish version of this (linked to in the description) must not have made any sense whatsoever.

So can anyone give a good explanation for why Mario powers up when Yoshi swallows items in Super Mario World?  Or for that matter, why swallowing something gives Mario a coin?

He can eat them in SM64DS as well, but I'm pretty sure he can't in SMG2 or SMS.

The Koopalings are Bowser's nephews and niece. Not his kids.
Would explain why they all look different. Would also explain why they only refer to them as his "underlings" in NSMBWii. Also gives Bowser Jr. a more meaningful existence as Bowser's son.
This makes about as much sense as anything else.  Forgive me for not reading up on my old-school SMB3 lore, but were they ever explicitly stated as being his children in the game they original appeared in (I never owned the NES version, so I don't have the manual handy).  Dang you, TMK manual section.  I think I'll accept this as canon nonetheless.

The Power Stars are similar to the One Ring.
Whenever Bowser gives one to a boss character, it corrupts their mind. Look what happened to that Wiggler in Tiny Huge Island. This also explains why everybody competes so ruthlessly in Mario Party.
That was always what I thought of when I beat Wiggler in SM64.  Shoot, extending it to Mario Party makes that series make a heck of a lot more sense, though.

Video Game Chat / Re: Stages for Super Smash Bros. 4
« on: August 11, 2011, 03:02:01 PM »
Yeah, I felt Smash Bros. Brawl didn't exactly do justice to the Kirby series in that regard, although the one new stage it got was one of the better/more interesting ones.  I guess SSBM having two/three made up for that, though.

Personally, I'd still like to see Sector Z and Hyrule Castle return, and a new Galaxy-themed stage would be pretty cool.  As much as I'm a fan of Rhythm Heaven, I don't think it's noteworthy enough to deserve a stage, and I'm not sure how it would flow with the Smash Bros. vibe were one included.

I guess one sound I've been wanting to get was the Critical/Lucky/OK/Good sound effect from Superstar Saga; I can't seem to disable the right channels to get just that sound.  However, if memory serves me correctly, I did successfully rip the HP and BP-restore sounds from the same game, which I haven't seen anywhere else, if anyone wants those.
