Video Game Chat / Re: Earthbound/Mother Port/Remake on the Horizon?

I'm curious as to how close the number of downloads thus far is to the number of people in the Miiverse community.  I got it yesterday, but I haven't posted anything on Miiverse yet, and I'm sure that could be true of any number of others.  I'd hope the reverse is less likely, but who knows.

Definitely looking forward to see what kind of kart customization Mario Kart 8 has to offer, that's the one thing that I really feel I'm missing out on not owning 7.

Honestly, I've been playing Double Dash!! a lot recently, and I can say that I don't really care so much about the two-character aspect returning; as far as I'm concerned, it only limits your kart selection per whatever items you prefer.  If it were to return without the Special item feature, I wouldn't mind; it'd be a merely aesthetic matter at that point, though.  The biggest issue, I'd imagine, is that you'd need a massively expanded playable character roster to support 12 teams of 2 from the get-go, while maintaining the current ratio of starter to unlockable characters (Dry Baby Metal Wawaluigi's a shoo-in, regardless).  What I'd really like to see return is Double Dash!!-styled power-sliding, but I can see from the trailers and gameplay that's apparently not happening.

I have to say, I love that they went with Blue Toad rather than Red Toad for 3D World for consistency's sake (with SMB2 and the NSMBs); were there any platformers with a playable red Toad outside of the SMB2 remakes?

Have to try this soon, I suppose.  Newer Super Mario Bros Wii finally released, though, so I'm already occupied with NSMB fare for the moment.

I played the Wii VC version again about a week ago for the heck of it.  Surprisingly, it wasn't as difficult as I thought I remembered it being; 4-4, 5-4, 8-1 and 8-4 were the only levels that cost me more than three lives (though I got incredibly lucky on 7-4).  Then I played it again as Luigi.  I can't believe I ever thought his superior jumping was worth the loss in acceleration and traction; I lost twenty-plus lives on 8-4 alone due to his inability to do those backwards cliff-jumps properly.

But yeah, memorization is pretty much required to get decent at the game.  Even still, I find the original version somewhat reliant on luck; due to sprite limits, there's several places where you have to be wary of the potential of missing/reappearing enemies.

Wow; I can't imagine ever being able to do that.  The castles from 4-4 on are all so difficult; I can't imagine passing them all without a powerup or death.

So I guess I lose?

I got to D-4 in the SMAS version in one playthrough (sadly, didn't beat it), without using the unlimited 1-ups trick with Mario.  Of course, that's with 5 starting lives.  I haven't played it in a while, so I don't know if I could do the same with Luigi.  I should try it on the Wii VC version for authenticity, I suppose.  Or the GBA Famicom Mini version, that cart's collecting dust someplace.  I've played through the whole game a couple of times with both Bros. on the SNES and GBC versions, at any rate, but not without continuing.

^ Why I refuse to play Pokémon.  I just know I'd spend countless hours setting up stat predictors and trackers like that.

Looks pretty awesome, though.

Read topic as "polyphasic sheep", and was mildly disappointed.  I've thought about alternate sleep schedules like this from time to time, but I don't think I could adjust to taking naps on command, even if on a regular basis.

A 3D Mario game that actually has brand new, completely different models for the Bros.?  What madness is this?  Seriously, though, I'm really interested to see how the switch to 3D will affect the feel of the game.  In particular, I hope there'll be more open areas than the ones in the trailer in the final product; nothing in the series has matched Superstar Saga's Beanbean Outskirts in both breadth and depth, in my opinion, not even the overworld in BIS.  Interesting that this seems to be such a direct, same-world sequel to BIS, as well; PiT and BIS may have had nods to their predecessors, but no recurring characters that actually played into the plots.

Also, what the Chef said.

@Insane Steve: I feel you there; I'm a grader for a stats class for math majors and every now and then things just about that stupid come up.

@equalsign: It was inevitable, I suppose.

Surprised MOTHER hasn't gotten much more attention in Japan than here; its 25th anniversary's coming up pretty soon, after all.  I'd still like to see that one come stateside, as well.

Here's a promotional video I just made for my upcoming CD, "Video Game Variations"; you can download the track at the link in the video description.

I plan on doing a few more of these leading up to the CD's release in mid-February.  Also, check out the two Kirby medleys I made last semester if you haven't seen them already, the Canvas Curse one is one of my best arrangements thus far.
