Title: Mario Sports Games
Post by: Kimimaru on June 12, 2007, 09:33:57 AM
Hello! I'm just wondering what people think about Mario sports games. Sorry if this was already posted, but I have never seen any others. I personally think that they're probably the best sports titles because of match twists and items. I'm not going to vote because I made this poll for you guys. Enjoy!

For the most part, good games.

Compared to real sports games, VERY GOOD GAMES.

Yes, Strikers was one of my favorites for quite a while until I stopped playing it.

I haven't played any of them, but I'd like to try Strikers.

Trust me, I was surprised when I found out how fast paced the game was. Sure, the game score at the end is insanely high for a soccer game, but that just adds to the craziness.

Mario Kart is the only "sports" spin-off I buy. I'm sure the other ones are good, but I don't really care for the rest of the sports genre. Just me.
Though if I buy a Virtual Boy I'll probably get Mario's Tennis.

All we need now is a "Mario Football" but I'm sure I'll get a lotta "Uh......no" from everyone here.  :P

Frankly I'm surprised there hasn't been a Mario Bowling.

Yeah, but for the arcade, because bowling games don't seem good on consoles (Except Wii Sports) they look better on arcade machines. With the ball attached to the machine so you can roll it to play.

There's a bowling game in Mario Party 8.

Yeah, and there have also been golf, basketball, soccer and even football mini-games strewn about the Mario Parties. What's your point?

Well, you're suprised that a Mario bowling hasn't been made yet, so.............

Mario Sports games are pretty good (in my opinion) because the Mario touch to them makes it so unique and fun to play. I'm surprised that there are not as many sports games for Mario as parties (it could be the other way around).

I can play as Mario in Wii Bowling courtesy of Suffix (maybe Nutjob).

I'd have perfered Mario Cricket...Gridiron is pushing it a little....

Come to think of it, Mario shouldn't be doing Team Games...

They should make Volleyball and Hockey.

I think Mario sports games are okay, but only in moderation.  Nintendo should focus more on main Mario games such as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy.  My favorite sport for Mario are tennis and golf.  I didn't like strikers or hoops very much and I hated the baseball one.
Title: Re: Mario Sports Games

I'm fine with mario sports games, even though I don't really play them at much (the main spinoffs I play are mario kart and mario party). I'm also even more accepting of them now that Nintendo has been making more standard mario games for the two current systems (FOUR platformers on the DS, and one AMAZING platformer on the Wii with a rumored sequel comning out). It's a lot better than it was back in the gamecube era. >_>

For the most part, good games.

Compared to real sports games, VERY GOOD GAMES.

Quoted for truth. Real sports games are EXCEEDINGLY boring, and unlike the mario sports games, they change very little each time a new version comes out.

The  only Mario sports spinoff other than the Mario Kart games (if they count) that I've played is Mario Strikers Charged.  It's pretty good for a while, but I suck at it.

If you play Mario Tennis on the Donkey Kong jungle court and make a point to never let the ball hit the ground (just lob all the time), you've basically got Mario Volleyball.

I like the Mario sports games, they simplify it to the point that I'd actually want to play the sports. But then I later learned that Mario Golf is just Hot Shots Golf with a makeover (which I'm okay with, I mean, solid simplified golf foundation there).

Super Mario Kart - Great courses, great presentation... but I just can't get that powerslide down.

Mario Kart 64 - Forgetting that I couldn't turn worth a darn in SMK, I tried this game... and wow. Powersliding is a lot easier here, turning feels more responsive - this is what I WANT Mario Kart games to control like. Everything since just feels more like Super Mario Kart (I tried Mario Kart Double Dash, it's just not the same). As a result, I liked this Mario Kart game... and I used to be so good at it that I thought the CPU players were an absolute joke - until I stopped playing it for years and found myself getting whooped by Toad.

Mario Golf - This used to be my favorite, man. I'd be in the house for hours on end, trying to Get Characters and getting a birdie on every hole (the Ask Dan guy said on that Jet Force Gemini / Donkey Kong 64 video that a birdie on every hole would unlock something special), pulling my hair out on trying to clear Ring Shot mode... good times. Great music too. And I used to be so good at it that putts were never a problem. Loved it, couldn't find any faults with it. That is... until that one fateful day when the game froze up and decided to delete ALL my saved data. That's the only time I felt that game saves would have been better if they were saved to the memory card. After that, I didn't have the will to spend another 40+ hours to unlock everything again. Imagine if a saved-game-deleting freeze happened when I was playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Mario Tennis - The most accessible Mario sport I think, very fast, lots of fun, and the roster's bigger (Paratroopa!!). I managed to beat all six cups with... either Yoshi or Paratroopa, I forget. My favorite moment in the game was when I was playing against Baby Mario, he was too good, I was on the ropes. I hit the ball straight towards Baby Mario, I'm thinking "Oh no, he's going to slam it past me, I just know it". Baby Mario winds up for the slam... but the ball hops over his head, Baby Mario goes "WAGH!", and I score a point. One of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Mario Golf Toadstool Tour - I don't know, didn't like this one as much. I know it's basically the same game, but I kind of miss the music and courses from the original game. I did like that Koopa Troopa's always on the verge of falling over whenever he takes a swing, though.

...and I haven't played any other Mario sports games. I was kind of disappointed to hear that the previous Mario baseball game (just the fact that there was a Mario baseball game boggles my mind) gave you no control over fielding, but in hindsight, virtual baseball games bore me to death. I tried playing a few baseball games, thinking there'd be something to hook me in... and there never was. The only baseball game I ever enjoyed was one of those Ken Griffey Jr. games. I think it was Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run for SNES. I liked when the umpire would tap the screen if you didn't do anything for a while.

Really the only Mario sports spin-offs I've played are the Kart games, and the only one I have a big problem with is Double Dash!! The physics seem so... off. Maybe it's just that DD has more realistic physics and all the other games are totally screwed up. Also, MKWii's biggest selling point (The Wii Wheel) happens to also be its biggest flaw. It's extremely unresponsive, and I've never managed to come in anything above 10th place using it.
Title: Re: Mario Sports Games
Post by: ShadowBrain on August 09, 2008, 06:57:24 AM
The wheel, at least for me, is great--you just come in last place(s) because the CPUs get Blue Shells and POW Blocks and all kinds of crap every five seconds. If there were only eight racers and less items, that game would actually be great. Quantity over quality, I guess... gee, that's a first.

I like Mario sports games alot except for Mario Strikers which I did not like.  My favorite are the Mario Karts second is Mario Golfs thrid is Mario Tennis fourth is Mario Basketball (only one of those for the DS) fifth is Mario Baseball.  I thought Strikers made the characters have to much attitude and peach had such little clothes she was almost naked.

Well they do let that stuff go through but it has to have a block on it that lets only registered members of youtube that are over 18 watch it.  My youtube age is over 18 so I can continue through the block to watch it after I have confirmed my birthdate.

EDIT:  What does QFT mean?  I've seen it a few times but never knew what it meant.

Oh please no.  I highly suggest getting Mario Kart Wii or A Mario Golf game when it comes out.  And if you can't get any of those then Super Mario Sluggers.  Any thing but Mario Strikers games.

I don't know about everyone else, but I don't really consider MKW a sports game. (Even though "technically" it is).

Mario Golf - Needs to die. I own all of them (minus the one for GB, but I have the GBA one). Mario Golf for GC was pretty good, I guess. Mario Golf for N64 is so boring I have never even had the attention span to beat one hole.

Mario Tennis - Needs to live. I love the games. I don't own them all, but I've played all of them (Once again, besides the GB one) and they're great. Mario Power Tennis for GC...well, I didn't get a good chance to really play it, but I did play it and I think it's awesome. Mario Tennis for N64 is fun too, I've played that one the most. I like the arcade style play and the wide character choice for an N64 game. The GBA version is pretty fun to, albeit kind of boring after awhile...

Mario Strikers - Never played one.

Mario Kart - This series is too good to be considered in the "Mario Sports" minority.

Mario Baseball - Very awesome, too. The only thing I don't like is the extremly unfair AI, but thats it.

Mario Kart - Very cool. The track design has seriously reached it's highest point with the Wii version.
Mario Strikers - Very cool as well.
Mario Golf - Eh, not really interesting to me at all, especially since I think anything golf is boring in general. And mario golf is a lot more realistic than most of the other mario sports games. Mario Golf for the N64 is about as realistic as Mario sports can get.
Mario Tennis - Again, very cool.
Mario Baseball - Not as cool, but the new version looks to be more fun

Actually, it can mean two things. Your definition is one of them, but there's another one that means the exact opposite - not to mention being rude (hint: Quit flipping talking, only more obscene). I've seen that phrase cause problems at other boards because people are not sure whether you are agreeing with them or insulting them. :P

Mario Golf - Needs to die.
The only ones that need to die were those old GB/A ones with the bizzare RPG/country club mash-up and dorky "real" people.

Also, do not buy Mario Kart Wii.

Mario Kart Wii was a letdown for me.  The Blue shells and Lighting bolts are way too abundant, they are even more common than banana peels, and there is a serious problem when that happens.  Plus I hate how there has to be 12 players on a team in battle modes, why couldn't we have the option to do a good old 4 player battle, and what happened to the loser gets turned into a bomb?  Plus I noticed that the tracks aren't as explorable as they used to be.  Also the characters don't even get unique items like in MKDD.

It's fun with five or six players on Wi-Fi. But I'm sure the same thing in an F-Zero game would make it obsolete, if it were fast when playing online. So if and when there's a Wi-Fi F-Zero for Wii, you'd all better buy it!
Title: Re: Mario Sports Games
Post by: jmdblazer on August 17, 2008, 09:48:04 PM
Mario Kart Wii is quite good, in fact. It only has a few flaws. And you CAN have 4 player battle, just turn off computers in settings.
Title: Re: Mario Sports Games
Post by: ShadowBrain on August 17, 2008, 09:51:09 PM
Here's the thing: Loved the tracks, loved the tricks, loved the bikes, loved the Wii Wheel, loved the graphics (by which I mean they weren't that bad). The only problem... four extra racers. It's not that there's more Blue Shells, etc., per se; it's just that there's more racers to use said items when they're programmed to suck. In a "normal" racing game, more cars is fine, but in Mario Kart, it transforms what was once a kind of luck-based racer into a full-out roulette wheel on... er, wheels.

Also, pretty much all the new characters were really stupid. Funky Kong must die.

When it comes to Mario spin-offs, I don't think anyone at Nintendo ever even thought the words "less", "is", and "more", in that order, at any point.

But I want Wart, Tatanga, Stanley the Bugman and Foreman Spike in the next Mario Kart!!! Are you saying my ideas are bad??? P.S. aren't you impressed I know about all these obscure characters? You must be pretty impressed. Now I'm off to play Super Mario Bros. which is way harder than Galaxy. I still can't beat the fourth world.

They have personality potential. For a guy who hates Waluigi so much, you'd think a change of pace would be welcome. I think you just hate any line of thinking that goes against the status quo, BP.

Funky Kong must die.

Title: Re: Mario Sports Games

The only reason anyone sees any charm in those characters is that they are obscure. If they were in every Mario game ever, you'd all be tired of them. And it's okay to let some characters rest in peace after their time has passed. Modernizing Stanley means he'd need a voice, personality and background information (and Mario Party handles that SO well). He was made to protect Mario in case Donkey Kong 3 was a flop, and it was, so he's served his purpose. Let him be.
Title: Re: Mario Sports Games
Post by: The Chef on August 18, 2008, 07:23:49 PM
One problem:

Stanley, Wart and Tatanga weren't enemy drones or original creations specifically put in as filler for spin-offs.

I'd like to see Stanley at least make a cameo in a Mario RPG, or have Wart and Tatanga come back as bosses. Hell, I reeeeeeeally wished they'd have done that with Waluigi at some point, but the fact that they didn't had caused the likes of you, BP, to hate the character's guts.
Title: Re: Mario Sports Games
Post by: BP on August 18, 2008, 08:17:06 PM
Daisy wasn't original to the spin-offs either and HI I'M DAISY

Ahhhm. But the real Mario games have come up with decent characters. Yoshi, Gadd, Toadsworth and Rosalina are good. But the spin-offs haven't beaten them to death yet, have they... unless they did when I wasn't looking (read: I'm never really looking). They kind of trapped Yoshi in this really screwed-up thing with Birdo though and I don't appreciate it... Doesn't matter, I don't consider the spin-offs canon anyway.

Also... who said I hated Waluigi (recently)? I mean, why would I make a comic series about him if I hated him? I could make a comic series about Toadette endlessly failing to obtain a cookie but it would be pretty bad. Waluigi is just so much fun to mess with. Like, after playing Mario Kart Wii and hearing his jovial cries as he used Mushrooms and did tricks:
Captain Jim: "So Waluigi, what game console did you buy late 2006?" [imitates Waluigi's voice] "Wiiiiii!!!!" "...I see."
But, I do like Waluigi where he is. Which is not on the character select screen in Brawl or a locked room in Super Mario 64 DS or in the kitchen or whatever. If someday Nintendo goes the way of Sega and starts to do things to Mario out of desperation, though, Waluigi should be the Shadow.
Title: Re: Mario Sports Games
Post by: Silver Metaknight on August 18, 2008, 09:26:07 PM
I think Waluigi should have a role in a game other than a sport or party game.  Also I think Wart, Tatanga, and Stanley should get cameos.

What I'd really like for Waluigi is this:
