Did you just apologize for owning a PlayStation?

Not really - but since the Playstation (mostly) stinks, I though I'd give an explanation why I actually had one. :P

Fine. Since I'm homeschooled, school in general isn't nearly as confining and stressful as public school. Plus, I have my mom as teacher, and that always helps. :)

Mario Chat / Re: BEST AND WORST IN SERIES? Week 21: First Level
« on: September 07, 2008, 02:02:42 PM »
Suprisingly, I'm actually going to nominate Super Mario 64 for "best first level". I don't like the game as much as a lot of other games, but I have to admit that Bomb-omb Battle Field is one of the most well structured introductary levels I've ever seen. It's not hard and eases you into the game's mechanics, but it also has a lot of secrets and translates the grass theme to 3-D very well. It's the only level in the entire game that I find myself going back to a lot- and I don't really play the game that much at all.

Worst? That's a toughie, but I'm actually going to say Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels. Yes, I've never gotten far in the game at all, but when I look at video game maps online, the later levels seem a lot better than the first. Level 1-1 honestly just feels too cluttered and rushed, with no rhyme or reason to the design. This is again compared to the other levels in the game - Lost Levels seems to have some of the best and most devious level design in any mario game, and the first level just doesn't seem to accurately convey the depth and scale of the rest of the game.

I just thought of one horrible game that I DID own. It was back when I actually had a Playstation 1 (yes, I owned a 10 dollar used one for about half a year - that was back before I knew much about video games). I got a game at a yardsale called Grudge Warriors. It was, to quote David Dayton, horribly horrible. Extremely repetitive and boring multiplayer, terrible graphics, an AWFUL single player "mode," etc. I'd say it would be worth about two cents - and only because you could get a decent minute's worth of fun by smashing it into pieces with a sledgehammer or pointy rock.

Oh, and I don't have that much of a beef with Nintendo - it's the third party hack "companies" that I despise so much. Especially the one that is infamous for the Mythmakers series and actually sold three "games" that were exactly the same except for graphics. :X

I know "the world" can have different definitions.

The book of Genesis also has two opposing creation stories so I don't know how much validity a destruction story would have.  Besides, there is evidence that the region Noah probably lived was flooded, but no evidence that the whole world flooded nor that only eight survived.  There's actually archeological and genetic evidence contrary to that.

I suggest studying some historical geology.  Besides, rearranging the continents would make very little difference on how much water would be required to cover all of them.

Okay, I dunno where you're getting the "multiple creation stories" from - there's only two chapters in Genesis that deal with creation, and neither contradict each other. The real problem is that we're getting into another debate - and they are never really resolved on here. I don't want to spend pages and pages arguing with people if none of us can end it - so I'm not going to post in this topic after this.

The answer becomes very obvious once you see the url for the picture.

*facepalm*

Dude, the world wasn't destroyed. A great deal of humanity was wiped out by the flood, but the actual planet survived.

Well, the  "the world" doesn't necessarily mean the whole planet. The world can also just mean "civilization." Back in ancient times, geology didn't exist, so if you wiped out the whole surface, you were wiping out the known world. In Genesis, it DOES states that the entire world was destroyed by a flood, which makes sense if you use that definition. Also, a great deal of humanity is a bit of an understatement - everyone was wiped out except for the 8 people on the ark, which is eight out probably millions.

At the time of the flood story the size of the Earth was not known.  Therefor, the destruction of the entire Earth could not have been certain.  It seems more likely that the flood was a massive flood of a small region of the Earth (as known today) even though it caused vast destruction for the time it occurred.

Keep in mind that the earth may have very well been just one continent back before the flood - and after the flood, it broke apart. Before than, covering the entire earth with  a flood probably wouldn't have been as big a feat as it would be now.

I didn't realize the earth can be destroyed twice.

If you've read the flood story, you'll know what I mean. :P

Galaxy for me as well. Basically all of it is awesome, and the Battlerock music and the remix of the Airship theme have to be two of my favorite mario tunes ever.

Second favorite would be the first Paper Mario, which had some of the best background music ever in an RPG, IMO.

I'm currently leaning towards the theory that the world will end via a giant volcanic explosion. I once saw a special on NOVA about how there is a huge amount of lava building up under the surface of the earth, which very well could be released in the next few hundred years. This kind of seismic explosion, which I believe would be equivilant to thousands of volcanoes going off at the same time, would probably incinerate the entire surface of the earth, and might even cause the earth's structure to decay. Whatever the case, the earth will be destroyed.

Personally, I think this is much more likely than an asteroid collision, both scientifically and spiritualy. Scientifically, because there still is little likelyhood that an asteroid will hit the earth in any reasonable period of time. Spiritually, because since I don't believe the earth will be destroyed by a flood again, a fire related destruction makes a lot more sense.

(Note: like the others, I'm not trying to start a discussion about theology - this is just my personal opinion and doesn't need to be turned into a huge debate with multiple sides. :P )

This is just plain win. Shadow, Shadow Mario, Meta Vader, Dry Koopa, Fierce Deity - man, all these awesome new texture swaps rock! Heh, I bet they'll do Boshi eventually, if all the SMRPG fans start coming over there and petitioning for him. :P

One thing though: Metroid Prime Zero Suit Samus is CREEPY as DUKAR. That has to be one of the most utterly insane things I've ever seen.

Exactly. I would add though that you also can determine how hardcore a game is by seeing how easy it is to pick up and play. The boggest franchises like Mario and Pokemon are generally casual, because they're easy to get into and appeal to a wide variety of people. More obscure franchises like Earthbound and Fire Emblem - while popular among a lot of Nintendo fans - are far more challenging and time consuming, which is why they're hardcore. There's probably not that many 10 year olds today that would find Ness and his quirky friends as appealing as a game of Mario Baseball or Mario Kart - and most probably haven't even heard of him apart from Smash Brothers.

Ironically, this would make the Metroid Prime series far more hardcore than Halo, despite a lot of fans seeing it the other way around. Despite the wonderful reviews Samus's 3D games have gotten, they still haven't sold nearly as many units as Halo. Halo is actually pretty casual compared to a lot of other series as well - online play is quick and easy to get into, and the story mode isn't the main focus. The reason why people call it hardcore stems from this silly misconception that "hardcore" means "dark, gritty, and realistic." Gamers 15 years ago would probably be laughing their controlers out of their hands if they saw the current state of the market. :P

Good news: For me, nothing, but for everyone who has not played it, it's a good game, have fun with it.

Bad news: A new batch of "G-no is teh best need moar of him in samsh brothers!!" Pay no attention to his soulless lack of character development or background information--he's seriously really cool, not in the least bit predictable or cliche and really does deserve it.

Couldn't have summed up my feelings better. SMRPG is good, just not that good - and Geno isn't good at all. :)

Well, he's right. 4chan does kinda suck.

I disagree. You can not beat the awesomeness of All Your Base.
