Title: Is there a rule against Necro-Posting?
Post by: LuigiBros on February 13, 2009, 10:05:57 PM
I've seen on a few sites that there's a rule that if a topic is over 1-2 months old it shouldn't be posted in and it's better to just start a new one; is that the case here?

You'll get yelled at by angry doofuses, but bumping is really not that big of a deal. Go ahead and post wherever you want, as long as the post is worthwhile. If it's not worthwhile you can go to Forum Games.

I would think it would make more sense to start a new one. What if it's months old? Isn't it better to just make a new topic instead? I also think if it's really old you'd have to go back pages and pages to find the old one.

Why would it be better to have two threads about the exact same thing?

Why would it be better to have two threads about the exact same thing?

For a discussion about the game's mechanics or something it would't make sense. If it's a poll people's opinions could have changed over time.

Well if you want to, go ahead, but don't be surprised if you get a lot of links to preexisting threads thrown at you.

If you really want to make people mad mad, go through their post history and go post in their first thread. For a side of extra anxiety, repeat for any "prominent" member.

The title of this thread made me think horrible things.

The title of this thread made me think horrible things.
Why? Does it have to do with the Necromancer?

Anyway, there is no rule here, but I wouldn't bump a thread that hasn't been posted in for a few months. I would advise no one to post in threads that have been dead for over a year. btw, most of us acted like dorks, failures or just abnormal sometime in our life. And we might have acted like that while posting on these forums. And no one likes it when someone digs through their old posts and reminds everybody how much that he/she used to spam.

So in some cases, if it is REALLY old, a new thread should be made. In some cases, it is okay to bump.

Another reason is if it's really old it would take forever to find it.

I imagine you can post a new topic if you can't find an old one.

If the moderators or administrators find it fitting, they'll find the topic themselves and merge it if a previous topic was actually made.

If only the forum had some kind of "Search" feature.

...that worked better.

So should I spend a while looking for the topic or just make a new one?

What do I care? I'm no mod/admin. I barely frequent these forums.

So trust your gut or whatever.

It's fine as long as you feel your contribution is worthwhile.

I've always preferred reviving old topics vs. creating new ones. A couple months isn't that old. Five years? Well, okay, maybe.

People will react either way. Revival leads to shock and "WHY DID YOU BUMP THIS?!", whereas creating a new one leads to linking to other topics and "DON'T YOU SEARCH?!" (...Actually, every once in a rare while people are happy when a topic's revived.) So if you're looking to avoid a reaction, you'll have no luck. ;)

While there's no rule against "Necro-Posting" (except bumping for the sake of bumping), my advice is to search for the topic, and if you can find one already made (especially if had a bunch of activity in it), just revive the topic, assuming you have something relevant and worthwhile to say. If there are multiple topics about it, just post in the most recent one and/or one with the most activity. Of course, if you can't find anything, just make a new topic.

If it's a poll that's been done before, make your poll different somehow if you're not content to revive the old one. Also, polls can always be added to non-poll topics if you ask a mod or the topic creator.

I thought Necro-posting was a pointless post in an old topic.

Heheh, he means necro-post as in a post by something dead.
