In most topics I see that have spoiler tags, when used, the person/place/thing that is spoiler-tagged is usually talked about without the spoilers later or is mentioned/hinted. It appears to serve no purpose.

Usually nobody uses them for real spoilers or the spoilers are not actually spoilers Jigglypuff is in Brawl lolz Bowser Jr. is in Mario Kart.

The spoiler tags are more of a comedy tool than anything.
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

I generally use them either for spoilers or as uber-parentheses (like if I feel like saying "LOL" but I don't want everyone on my case).
