Site Discussion / Re: Sigh... where is everyone?
« on: December 06, 2014, 07:17:26 PM »
I really like this discussion. It's something I haven't thought much about previously.

I feel TMK provides its information at a much better quality than sites like MarioWiki. That is, it's clear, concise, and enjoyable to read. Although the quality of pages on MarioWiki aren't up to par with TMK, there's a lot more information available about the Mario series as a whole. On top of that, anyone can easily contribute to pages and share their knowledge.

In general, I think social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and whatever else is out there have for the most part dominated online forums. For example, SmashBoards used to be the premier site for organizing Smash tournaments, but now people have moved away from it and shifted to Facebook Groups/Events. Convenience may be the biggest factor, considering Facebook is many people's central hub for social activity online.

I don't post here very often anymore because I too am a game designer/programmer and prefer to spend my free time working on personal projects. I still browse the forums every now and then, though.

This is pretty neat since it gives us more insight into how the "kidnapping scene" Peach was programmed.

From what I've tested, there may have been intended to actually be 122 total, because from 123 on the brightness in delfino plaza resets to 0 so the island literally becomes pitch black. It gradually gets lighter the higher you go up and I'm not 100% sure but it drops again and repeats continuously until 999 (It wont display 1000 no matter what, and it freezes when you get a shine). I might record a video of this if anyone's interested.

This is also interesting, but I wouldn't conclude that this means there were intended to be more obtainable Shine Sprites. It is possible they reserved a couple of values above the obtainable maximum as a precaution and softcapped the max brightness value, which looks to be a signed integer that overflows when the number of Shine Sprites is above 122.

Mario Chat / Re: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

I've been greatly anticipating this game since it was shown at E3, and this new footage really looks amazing! I played the Captain Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World and loved them, and I'm glad they took the core idea of those levels and fleshed it out into an entire game. I'm just hoping for a good number of original music; though the Super Mario 3D World soundtrack was fantastic, I want them to come up with something new instead of recycling/slightly modifying those tracks.

I think the Galaxy stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U puts a nice twist on things without straying too far from a typical stage. I would be interested in seeing similar ideas in other stages.

Project M is very good. The only thing I don't like is how small some of the stages are in relation to their sizes in Melee or 64.

One of my housemates got it and I played it. I don't mind the Tingle Bottles, but I miss the Tingle Tuner; the exclusion of it is strange because the Tingle Chests are still in the game and have even had the graphics overhaul.

Overall, I love how much less time consuming some activities are. The Sail, Wind Waker, Bombs, and Grappling Hook are automatically equipped in the boat so you don't have to constantly switch between items as much. You can also switch items without pausing via the gamepad which is another plus for me. The game looks great, and Hero Mode ups the difficulty a bit.

Video Game Chat / Hiroshi Yamauchi Passed Away Today

On today, September 19, 2013, Hiroshi Yamauchi, former President of Nintendo, has passed away at the age of 85 due to pneumonia. R.I.P to a very significant man in Nintendo's history who helped form the company into what it is today.

General Chat / Re: Polyphasic sleep
« on: September 05, 2013, 07:11:27 PM »
I've always felt better when I got under 8 hours of sleep, so about a month ago I decided to take up a biphasic sleep schedule and it has been working very well for me. I get much more vivid dreams (and even remember most of them) and even got a few lucid dreams. I feel just as good as when I was on a monophasic schedule, and I don't need to sleep as long (a total range of 5 and a half to 6 and a half hours).

Unfortunately, the society I live in still operates on a monophasic schedule, so it's difficult when I have class/work whenever I'm supposed to take my nap and I can't delay it because my housemates all sleep around the same time. I still recommend everyone to try a different sleep schedule for at least a week or so.

I may eventually try the Everyman cycle and see how it works out for me. An extra 2-3 hours of awake time per day doesn't sound bad at all!

Mario Chat / Re: Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

The main thing that takes up my free time is a game I'm currently developing that I started a little over a year ago. College takes up a fair bit of my time as well when it's in session but not nearly as much as the game. I play video games occasionally but not as often as I used to.

I played the demo and enjoyed it. I think they did a good job brushing up the pause menu (not that the previous ones were bad; I just find the new one easier to use). From what I noticed, the gameplay is pretty much the same old goodness. I'm tempted to pick up the full game now; the only thing holding me back is how much less time I spend playing video games now compared to previous years.

I agree with that BP. They should really just leave the older Pokémon alone and focus on the new generation. Most of the fun from Generation 5 came from exploring a new area with completely new Pokémon and leaving no trace of previous Pokémon games except for the core mechanics of the series of course.

Are they really giving you a Generation 1 starter at the start? That's ridiculous; what happened to the new starters?!

A Pokémon fighting game; I would've never expected that! Hopefully it turns out well.

As for X and Y, I'm not completely sold on them yet until I see more gameplay and how they utilize the 3D world to do things they couldn't with 2D.

I've beaten it a few times several years ago, also unlocking World 9. It's definitely one of the harder Mario games, but I remember another Mario game being harder. I can't remember it right now, though.
