Title: Women of the Mushroom Kingdom
Post by: David on May 29, 2000, 02:35:41 AM
Well, there's Princess Toadstool ("Peach!") and Princess Daisy, I suppose. Any others?

Let's do the Mario, all together now!

Strictly limited to the Mushroom Kindgom area? Hmm. There's not many. If we include other "lands" then there's Wendy O., Pauline, and lots of enemies I may be forgetting.

Can't wait to see Daisy in Mario Tennis! That'll be neat. :)

If you count Mario Golf, there's also Plum & Maple.

If you count DK Isles because Donkey Kong has been in Mario Multiplayer and was the first game with Mario, you could count Tiny, Dixie, Candy, and maybe Wrinkly Kong (even though she died).

Joanna Dark!

Wait.. that ain't Mario. Sorry!

Well, Most people only think of Daisy, Peach, Wendy (Cutie Pie to me, I watched the cartoon alot when I was a kid. I'm 14 fer crikey!) and Pauline.

Sad huh? But, you CAN count Valentina, Mama Mole, Dyno, Rani, Monstermama and Peach's Grandma from SMRPG. Even If Square took the rights for them after they left.

I can't believe noone has mentioned Birdo from SMB2 fame... at least I think Birdo was a female.  Come to think of it, we really don't know the genders of most enemies.  (Goomba?)

Actually, I recall reading something when I was younger about Birdo. He thinks he's a girl but he really isn't. Kinda questionable if you ask me, but kinda funny too.

Yeah, I'd say Peach, Daisy, Pauline...that about covers it. But what about the mother penguin and her kid in SM64?

Razzek M is right. Birdo actually thinks he's a girl, but heck, he's a guy. Or maybe he's a hermaphrodite? Hmmm.... Am I going to be kicked off the message board for saying that word? =P

Post by: David on June 02, 2000, 12:03:45 AM
Naah... I won't kick you off for that.

Yeah, Birdo is male... or at least the Birdo in the SMB2 miniboss battles was male. However, I would think that every enemy species would have both male and females... otherwise you'd never have so many running around.

Well, If limited to the Mushroom Kingdom, then Daisy is not on the list either.

Speaking of Mario Tennis: If they were running short on characters, could they not have put in Tatanga instead of inventing Ruigi (I like that name more...)? Or perhaps use some of those from Mario Golf (Who are those guys, anyway?)?

There is Plum, who I think is Peach's sister. Or Camelot just made those up for kicks. And Maple....

actualy, all the princessed are the same. In japan they were all princess peach. But in america they kept changing her name. Pretty cool huh? So there really is only one. Well I'm not sure I think the donkey kong girl was named somthing different but she wasn't a princess she was Mario's girlfriend.

You guys are forgetting Syrup.  She's the villain in the Wario Land games, and the only Mario character besides Bowser to be the final boss in more than one game.  Plus, she could beat the stuffing out of Peach.

Thank you for saving us but our princess is in another castle!

One more is Wanda.  She was the fairy/witch/sprite thing that was playable in Mario vs. Wario, which never hit American shores.  She made blocks appear in order to help get Mario to the exit.  Umm... yeah.

If you go here:

http://come.to/magicbox

and click on the news of May 31, they have a news item about Mario Tennis.  One of the new characters is a Boo, but she/he/it is named "Teresa".  There's nothing to distinguish Teresa from her fellow Boos, but it appears to be a new female character nevertheless.

Wrinkly Kong died after DKC3, yet a bit before DK64. And I did mention Syrup. You should pay more attention to details from giant chicken ostriches. THey have so much to say...Kweeh!

Are all of those Mushroom Retainers male?  If so how did they have little mushroom retainers...?
If anybody knows the answer please DON'T tell me.

I see all, hear all, and know all. (At least about SMB DX.)

Everyone else seems to have forgotten about this post, but I thought of two more ladies... In Wario's Woods for the NES there is Sarissa, a cute little witch, and Aquaela, a pink-haired mermaid.  They're opponents for Wario.  _Now_ this list is complete.
Title: Re: Women of the Mushroom Kingdom
Post by: Mega 2 on June 10, 2000, 11:59:01 AM
The Mushroom Retainers were presumably female, since some sources call them "Mushroom Girls."  I always thought Birdo was a species (or 3, green, purple, and red; or maybe it's 3 sup-species or 3 races, I don't know the "Mario" taxonomy) not an individual.  The Birdo character is named Catherine.  Cheep-Cheeps are male and female, they're fish!  Lakitu is a woman, right?
Title: Re: Women of the Mushroom Kingdom
Post by: Kinopio on June 10, 2000, 05:39:24 PM
Mushroom Retainers are both male and female.  In Super Mario RPG, we clearly meet lady Shrooms like Raini and Gaz's Mom and Grandma Toadstool.  Birdo's name is Catherine?  This is news. I thought Birdo was a boy who thinks he's a girl and likes to be called "Birdetta."

Hmmm, I don't know if this list is being strictly restricted to **just** the Mario video games that females have been in or in other "Mario"...umm..items??? I can recall from the Mario cartoons [SMB3] There was that freaky underwater "ugly" mermaid that thought Mario was her husband in the frog suit,... or something like that! Peach, Daisy, Plum, Syrup, Wendy 0. Koopa, [aka Cutie Pie]  And I remember in some of the Mario comics [SMB3;2?], there was a Piranha plant character that was a female, [sorry, but I really can't remember the names~] And also  in the comics,[SMB3] I think Big Bertha [that big fish that always tries to eat you] Was a female... ^^;;; or at least in that comic she was. And again, I don't know if this counts, but there were ALOT of Cavewoman in the cartoon Super Mario World. [Oye, how I miss that show, ^_^; Uktar (that's how you spell his name, right?] was so messed up in the head! It was funnie~]

Speaking of the mushroom people...

I always thought fungi (mosses, molds, and mushrooms) repruduced asexually through spores, so that different genders are unecessary.  Of course, if game makers didn't take certain creative liberties like that it wouldn't be much fun at all, would it?
Title: Re: Women of the Mushroom Kingdom

All lichenomycete fungi reproduce sexually, the deuteromycetes are asexual.  Deuteromycetes are composed of 3 phyla: Basidiomycota (true mushrooms), Ascomycota (pseudomushrooms), and Chytridiomycota (chytrids).

Well there was that witch in Super Mario Land 2 plus there was Axel Pink from Mario RPG. And most likely there will be some new girl in Paper Mario. And was the worm like guy from Super Mario World(in the Lost Forest)also a female.

I think some of these posts have been a little misguided. "Koopa Troopas are female" "Cheep-cheeps are male", etc.
There are many Koopa Troopas. Many of them are male, and many are female. Cheep-cheaps, I assume, are the same.
Of Birdo, there could be just one. I don't think more that one has ever been on the screen at once. However, because Birdos come in different colors and abilities, I think there are many as well. I think there are both female and male birdos but they all like to wear big bows on their heads.
Mushroomians, both male and female. I don't think the people of TMK are really fungi, they just wear mushroom "hats" and tend to be short.
Actually, when it comes to Spinys, Buzzy Beetles, Cheep-Cheeps and a few other creatures, I don't think it matters what gender they are. I believe they are "un-intelligent" lifeforms. Like pets of the koopas or wildlife or whatever.

Err..well, that's about it.

TurtleTek-Everything you just said I already posted.  Doesn't anybody ever listen to me?  By the way you see two Birdos in the same room in "Super Mario" Bros. 2" in level 8 on a conveyor belt or something.  One is purple and one is green.
Title: Re: Women of the Mushroom Kingdom
Post by: Kinopio on July 05, 2000, 02:10:02 PM
Yeah, Birdos are like Yoshis.  There are a ton of them, but we select that one Green Yoshi as _the_ Yoshi and that one pink Birdo as _the_ Birdo, who (as Mega 2 did mention) was named Catherine in Wario's Woods for no appparent reason other than to confuse the issue.
Title: Re: Women of the Mushroom Kingdom
Post by: TurtleTek on July 05, 2000, 07:17:54 PM
Mega 2, it's true, many of your posts hint at what I just said. However, not in so many words. And "Lakitu is a woman" doesn't quite simplify anything either. ..Hm. Speaking of Lakitu, I assume there are several. The "Lakitu brothers" are mentioned in Mario64.

So two Birdos appear on the screen at once in SMB2? Thanks. Oh, and I'm glad they give "THE Birdo" a name rather than calling her "Birdo" like they do Yoshi. How annoying.
