His original Japanese name is Eggman, but Robotnik is a much more villainous sounding name IMO
-
Do I need to say it?
-
Do I need to say it?
[insert Robotnik macro here]
-
it really annoys me that they call him eggman in all the new games
-
Robotnik indeed. He contributes more trouble in brute force.
-
While I prefer Robotnik, I always called him "Egghead" when I was a kid.
-
His name is still Robotnik. Sonic just mockingly calls him Eggman. Both names are canon.
-
Eggman is his real name and is better. Robotnik is a retarded sounding name.

That's not entirely true. He's referred to himself as Eggman since SA2.

Which annoys me to no end.

From what I played of Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut, he seems to like both. Robotnikland! The Egg Carrier! Eggmanland sounds dumb, but the Egg Carrier rocks hard. I can't choose.
If his name were being announced by, say, the Brawl announcer... I'd expect to hear "Dr. Eggman." He is a pretty egg-like man, is he not?
-
Honestly, I use them interchangeably. Eggman is a nickname. Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.
...also, the Robotnik Carrier sounds dumb.
-
You kids and your "eggman". Back when Sonic was still awesome, we had Robotnik and WE WERE HAPPY.
-
Eggman is his name the end.
-
Eggman is his name the end.
Robotnik is his name the end.
-
They're both his name. GAME SET.
EDIT: Seriously, though. This like if everybody insisted that Peach's real name were Toadstool or Bowser's real name were King Koopa. Each of these characters had Japan and US names that both ended up becoming proper over time. Refer to them however you want.
-
For me, Eggman is just a nickname that Sonic and his pals call Robotnik, and it really annoys me when Robotnik refers to himself as Eggman. Robotnik, in paraphrasing AoStH, hates that hedgehog. Why would he adapt to a nickname that was given to him by the guy he hates?
-
Because it was given to him by the artist that created him. In Japan. Not given by Sonic, a fictional character.
Next thing you people are going to be arguing that Porky's real name is Pokey.
-
"Maria Eggman" just doesn't sound right. At all.
-

I generally avoid calling her Peach when talking about Super Mario RPG, at least.

Bleh-bleeb-bleh-buh-bleeb-bluh-bleh-blah-Come and get me, bleh-LOSER!
-
Robotnik definitely. I grew up hearing that name. I think Eggman sounds stupid.
-
Here's what I think happened just before Sonic Adventure 2:

"The name is no longer Robotnik."
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv299%2FRyanFerneau%2Fjulian2.jpg&hash=7408c9befd2d921b7d0f50cfbb934d6c)
"From this day forward, I am the Eggman!"
"That's what I am!
I am the Eggman!
I got the master plan!"
And this was probably all a result of him being called "Ro-butt-nik" one too many times.

Poor guy.
-
Robot Nick.
-
You know, this is exactly like what happened to Bowser.
Remember when his only name was King Koopa?
Or when Peach was just "The Princess" or "Princess Toadstool"?
It's like that. I actually have grown to like the name Dr. Eggman...It fits his more bizarre personality in the Post S&K3 games. Robotnik does sound more menacing but I don't think that he's meant to be THAT menacing in the games. He's the bad guy, sure, but all of his robots are shaped like little animals and bugs. He's my favorite out of all of video gaming history's famous evil mad scientists. Oh, and I use the two names interchangeably.
-
He's been Bowser since the original Super Mario Bros. in America. He was only "King Koopa" in the licensed shows because either that was the one name they never bothered to look up in the manual, or they just liked the alliteration too much.

-
That reminds me heavily of the Stinkoman manual, which is written similarly but in a hilarious manner.
-
But notice it says "Bloober" instead of 'Blooper'
-
They really gotta play up the whole "sorcerer king" angle again...
-
Bloober is the correct name. They just randomly changed it to Blooper in the late N64 era for no reason.
-
That's interesting. I' don't actually recall ever seeing an actual instruction manual to the original Super Mario Bros. I guess I must have lost it before I even learned how to read.
-

Wow, and it was still "Bloober" as late as Super Mario Bros. Deluxe! I'm on a roll with these images...
Say, do you think "Blooper" is supposed to be a reference to The Bloop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloop)?
-
Robotnik is Better, but the times have changed, and what are we going to do about it?
-
For me, Eggman is just a nickname that Sonic and his pals call Robotnik, and it really annoys me when Robotnik refers to himself as Eggman. Robotnik, in paraphrasing AoStH, hates that hedgehog. Why would he adapt to a nickname that was given to him by the guy he hates?
Because Robotnik in AoStH and Robotnik in the Sonic games are two different people from two different universes. It could be said that Eggman is also his alias.
"Maria Eggman" just doesn't sound right. At all.
Which is why they refer to her as Maria Robotnik.
-
Robotnik is Better, but the times have changed, and what are we going to do about it?
refuse to buy any more Sonic games until Sega changes him back to Robotnik
-
Yes, then they'll read the pathetic sales charts, think "Well, looks like gamers aren't interested in Sonic anymore," and then take Sonic games off the market completely.
-
Yes, and then we won't have to hear the name "Eggman" ever again!
-
Can't beat that logic.
-
You could, but you would have to study under Isaac Newton.
-
Studying over Isaac Newton is a different story. Then you fall on him and he comes up with another theory.
-
Yeah: "Turtlekid1 has been going to town on the funnel cake!"
-
Since when is Sonic going off the market a bad thing? The series has highly gone downhill, aside from the Rush series.
-
That's a good point as well. I'm selling Shadow the Hedgehog to make money for MKWii, and I hear Sonic '06 isn't exactly a masterpiece, either.
Maybe they need to start calling Dr. Robotnik "Dr. Robotnik" again for luck.
-
eggman is almost like a name made to ridicule him yet robotnik still calls himself that
(by the way when I was typing this on the wii i found it funny that nintendo put eggman in their "guessing what word you are going to type in" dictionary, but they didn't put in Robotnik)
-
It doesn't have to be Sonic-related. Perhaps the doing of Shigesato Itoi, a Beatles fan...
-
Speaking of Eggman, I found it funny that the moving truck in Toy Story was called Eggman Movers.

That was named after Ralph Eggleston.
-

But it also has tails and knuckles and silver and cream and shadow and a bunch of other sonic characters (i was just kidding for those of you that thought that I actually didn't realise that those were real words.)
-
Have you noticed that maybe all the aforementioned character names are real words, too? Just a thought.
-
I know all of those are actual words. I was just being sarcastic (i even said I was joking in the parenthesis)
-
Yeah, sorry, I didn't catch that until after I posted (I could've sworn it wasn't there?...)
-
I might have posted it then added the words in the parenthesis. But I'm pretty sure I put that in the original post.
