Title: Is there a musician in the house?
Post by: Rao on December 02, 2007, 04:16:56 PM
I thought it would be cool to find out who on the FF plays music. You can post here if you're just beginning to take lessons or if you've been playing for years.

I myself have been playing guitar for about two years. I also play bass, drums, and mandolin.

I've been able to play the bells/xylophone since fifth grade, though I stopped playing earlier this year. I now play keyboard. I also play cowbell, but that probably doesn't count.

I've been wanting to learn to play guitar, but I haven't replaced the broken string on my younger brother's acoustic (honestly, I don't think he even remembers that he has a guitar, considering how long I've had it put away).

I've been playing the piano for...I forget, 8 years now?...and the violin for 4 years. I'm in an Orchestra class at my school, as well as an after-school Jazz Band program.

I used to play the Cello, but had to give that up when we moved here (about 12 or so years ago). I started playing the clarinet in the band in 8th grade, and in 9th grade was moved into the marching band. (this taking place about 8 years ago)

After graduating high school, I didn't pick up my clarinet all that much, and started playing the piano. I found that I could play most of the music I learned on my clarinet on the piano, so I started messing with the piano more, playing mostly by ear.

As it turns out, I taught myself how to play alot of classic video game themes on the piano (some I still can't figure out on the clarinet).

I can play piano, kinda; I took lessons as a li'l-un, but didn't go very far with 'em.  I generally mess up quite a bit while playing...

I also can't read sheet music worth beans (it takes me ages to work out a short bit, and even longer to figure out how the song is ACTUALLY supposed to sound), so I only really play video game music by ear anymore.
Though I do enjoy doing such.

I've been playing the piano for about 5 years (my mom makes me do it) and I've been hating every second of it because I have to practice for 30 minutes a day which sometimes doesn't let me have enough time to do other stuff like play, eat, do homework, sleep.

Seriously. My bro is going to try out for Denver Blue Knights and he only practices an hour a day.
I have been playing trumpet for over 5 years. I love it. I am just now learning how to play tenor drums.

I also play bass, drums,
I also play bass drums.

I've been playing [electric] guitar now for three-and-a-half years, and am self-taught on bass guitar (though the guitar lessons work for both guitar and bass :P). I can also sing, and used to be one of the best in my class in 3rd grade. Of course, many things have changed since then. Nowadays, $5 is pocket change!

Mm, well these are all fairly old, and full of errors and the like (I tend to play a lot worse when I'm aware of being recorded)... but here y'go:

SMW credits (http://www.geocities.com/f2fth/5smw-end.mid) (all full of errors)
SMS Bianca Hills (http://www.geocities.com/f4fth/sms-bianca.mid)... or is it "Bianco"?
...And Erana's Peace (http://www.geocities.com/f1fth/erana.mid)

...oh, and two (http://www.geocities.com/f4fth/gb2.mid) other songs (http://www.geocities.com/f4fth/gb1.mid), from Wario Land 3, just 'cause they're already uploaded and everything.

...and yes, it's MIDI format.  It happens to be a very efficient format for this sort of thing, so just bear with it: there's only one instrument playing.

I played the piano and violin in high school, but college squeezed the musicianship out of me. Too expensive, too much time necessary.

You can see me do an impression of a "The Robot" while conducting a somewhat sad high school orchestra on Youtube, though.

A rental French horn was $500 for me. -_-

Purchasing one would be in the quadruple digits, so yeah, very expensive if you don't own your own instrument.

Not only that, but by increasing the amount of time before I graduate (though adding classes and offsetting others), I pay more tuition.

I'm sure my dad would have let me use his violin, which I used in high school.
Title: Re: Is there a musician in the house?
Post by: Chupperson Weird on December 09, 2007, 01:47:41 AM
I know people who paid $3000 (or more) for their violins, but once you have one, you have one...
As for lessons/classes?, that wasn't really what I was thinking as far as "expense". I mean you don't have to be formally studying an instrument to play it.
Last night I had a dream I was playing a trombone for some reason. It was weird.

I've done piano on and off with lessons/no lessons for a long time. Of course, lessons were a burden, so I quit. Granted, I can plunk out a tune, but not with much finesse (that's reserved for my brother) Currently, I don't play any instrument habitually, but I did do trombone in 5th grade (I wanted drums because it seemed easier, but my uncle already owned a trombone and I think my parents just wanted to save a buck. Behold, weeks of embarassment having virtually no clue how to play an instrument in a class/school full of people who already hated me anyway).

I play a lot of musical instruments. Clarinet, Sax, Guitar (and of the Bass vareity as well), Piano, and I've just recently started teaching myself the Djembe.

I also write music for fun. I take informal lessons with a composition instructor who is more my friend than teacher. Although I have had not formal music schooling, other than band and the easy theory classes they offered, I think I'm a halfway decent composer.

http://koopaslaya.googlepages.com/Track01.MP3 (http://koopaslaya.googlepages.com/Track01.MP3)

There is a very rough song that I have yet to finish. It moves from one movement to the other far to quickly, and the movements do not quite build up as well as they could. The best (most complete) part is at 2:38. I have had not time to work on it since school started.

http://koopaslaya.googlepages.com/ConcerningGrapefruit.mid (http://koopaslaya.googlepages.com/ConcerningGrapefruit.mid)

This is my most recent musical composition, which I have not even recorded into MP3 format yet. This is also rough. It is about eating a Grapefruit and the difficulties and pleasures therein. The first movement is one of pain and struggle as out main character prepares his grapefruit, cuts his finger, and squirts citric acid in his face. In the second movement, the main character consumes the flesh of the grapefruit in joy and peace. Soon, however, he realizes that there is no more Grapefruit to enjoy. This song is filled with plenty of filler, as I need to work on the main Oboe line a lot.

I hope you all enjoy these two examples of musical fun.

That MP3 was pretty darn cool, KS.

I haven't composed anything since early high school, but I hope to have some time to experiment soon.

I play the guitar (bass, electric and acoustic), the saxaphone, the keyboard and the Irish whistle. Have been doing for years. I'm currently in a band of five people (they are all friends whome I used to go to school with years ago) - we play in the local pub about twice a year. When we do play, we do a lot of video game themes, but vary the way we play them a lot. We also like to do covers, as none of us can write very good songs :D
We tried to write one once, and it failed miserably, so we played the Tetris theme straight after.

The one on the right is my rental French horn I've been using for awhile.

The one on the left is a two-valved bugle mellophone, keyed in G. I play this for a local fire station's marching band.

At this time, my band already has two tracks recorded. Naturally they're not the best, as I was the only one with proper equipment. The guitar was acoustic, when it was songs that could def use electric. The bass was also ampless, and we didn't even have our drummer, so there was no percussion. They're from our first practice, too.

Why does the singer sound like a dragon with a sore throat? I only like certain screaming vocals, but they must be interspersed with clean vocals. Also, I think it might be helpful if you learn a little about some chord progressions in minor keys. Screaming over the Ionian mode is almost always completely unbearable.

By the same token, keep making music because I think that it's far more important than any sports.

I've written three songs in my life, but I can't play them on any non-kazoo instrument, so I just have to hum them. Which is all right, because the lyrics are really lame. (Although I actually don't remember all the words to any of them)

I used to play the clarinet, but I wasn't very good or anything.  I play the piano by ear, so that probably doesn't count either.  However, I was/am in a barbershop quartet called "Fourtissimo" (get it?) and I sing lead.  There are videos on youtube!  Ooh, ahh... yeah, so I can sing, but I'm not extraordinarily talented or anything.

Tuba: 5th grade - first two weeks of 9th grade

Piano: Since 10th grade. I have a Yamaha PSS-160 with like 12 instruments and beats, a crappy memory (remembers up to 50-ish notes and can only keep your tempo correct and remember every note you play if you play it very slow and hold the notes), and instruments that sound 0% like their real counterpart. I did receive a PSS-480 with 100 instruments, 100 beats, 10 memory slots for whatever you wanted, and a synthesizer..... the voices sounded closer to the respective instrument.... after about 3 months of having it, it messed up: It drops all F and B notes. If it used to do that, you had to hold the next key up from it (chromatically, so F#, or B#) and keep it held to play the F and Bs. Now,  said notes are completely broken, so I've reverted back to the crap PSS-160, which bothers me. (PSS-160 = mine was built in 1986)

I've learned everything I know (50+ songs) by ear because piano sheet music is God-awful. 6 note chords, signs i've never seen (hey I played the friggin' tuba... I had quarter notes, whole notes, half notes, and some 8th/16th/32nd notes sprinkled in there), and remembering which key everything is in and what it affects is too annoying for me.

Wish I had lessons and an actual keyboard.

Most of the songs listed are basic (well, I play them in basic form unless I save other parts of the song to my keyboard or know some chords for the song) since I haven't had any formal training:

Donkey Kong- All songs and SFX
SMB- All songs, and I know the power-up sound, power-down/pipe sound, hitting a ? block sound, coin, time-running-out thing, etc.
SMB2- Just a couple songs
SMB3- All songs, basically, save for just a few. Also, I figured out the stage-flipping-over sound after you complete the level and return to the map screen (for the SMAS version), and the sound of the timer being counted for points.
SML- Overworld, underworld.
SMW- All songs, save for just a couple. Also figured out the death theme, and the SFX when you release a reserved item.
SMK- Koopa Beach, Raceways, few more. Also figured out the notes for the "item roulette." (I like DS' the most since it changes depending on course)
MK64- Luigi Raceway, few others.
MK:DD- Luigi Raceway, couple others.
MKWii- Trying to learn some of the songs, really haven't worried about it. Wanna learn Maple Treeway.
Mario Golf- Toad Highlands, Shy Guy Desert.
MG:TT- Peach's Castle. (I have two other parts saved to my keyboard). Also, menu screen (love that song).
Mario Tennis/MPT: Some songs.
Sunshine: Delfino Plaza, some others.
Galaxy: Observatory, Good Egg, Battlerock, Space Junk, the weird song that plays in the cube thing (where you chase the notes the very first time at Good Egg), and just recently learned Beach Bowl, and Rainbow Mario. (The only thing I need help with on that song is the harp played in the background that is played very fast. No one ever offers any advice or knows what I'm talking about, so please... anything?)
The Sims: One of the "buy crap" songs.
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time: A few (I don't boast that I can play the main theme because that is like the ultimate cliche now). Also, learned the little bit that's played with an ocarina when morning comes.
Wind Waker: Great Sea, Cursed Great Sea, the forest place, Outset Island, a few others.
Rally X: Intro song, main song, bonus song (I combine the main and bonus for a medley of sorts so the bonus portion of the song really sounds like a solo of the main song) Also, found out the sound effect for when you get a Special Flag and it's counting your fuel.

Many, many more. Oh yeah, I learned all the city songs (save for California) on the SNES version of Mario is Missing (aka, the best arrangements of Super Mario World, ever). Also a few from Mario's Time Machine.

If you read that above, you'll see that I have a knack for trying to figure out sound effects from games like power up, power down, reserved item release, etc. Playing those sound effects in conjunction with song just kinda helps it come to life a bit more and reminds people of the most recognizable sound effects in Mario games (for non-Mario-ish people).

My power up sound is made with "Gameboy" sounds on my keyboard (sounds exactly like it, voice #387 on my DGX-200) and speeding it up makes it sound like the Power-Up SFX used for the mini-game Mushroom Titan in MP3.

Here's another musician in the house. I play synth/piano, trombone, and I sing. I'm thinking of getting a trumpet to play around with sometime as well.

When I was in high school I used to warm up with Mario songs on the trombone every day (which I memorized and never used sheet music for). People would request Mario songs from me but the overworld theme was everyone's favorite. When I was a junior I had a friend who played saxophone who wanted to play Mario as well. I spent a whole evening transcribing it with him. Within a few weeks he had taught it to about five other sax players and they would all play it together. I know they passed it on to some of the younger guys after I graduated but I'm not sure if those guys passed it on to the folks who would be there now.
