Title: The Hardest Mario Game
Post by: Nintendoobsessed on July 18, 2008, 02:39:18 PM
What do you think is the hardest Mario game? It's probably Yoshi's Island DS, but I was bored, and wanted to start a conversation...

SMB2J.

I have to agree with BP... haven't gotten past World 5, at least last time I checked.

Not to mention it took me forever to get there in the first place.

I still can't beat SMB1...

SMB2J for traditional platformer.
YIDS once you factor in the 100% goals, if you consider it a Mario game.
Hotel Mario otherwise.

I think M&L:SS was hardest to beat.  Not that the game itself is hard, but it's hard to go through the same battle a dozen times and want to continue playing.  I stopped playing once I got to Morton Koopa, I think, because of lack of interest.  I should probably finish it one of these days... but then again, I don't even have a Wii or DS to move onto anyway.

I highly recommend finishing it. Morton Koopa is right at the end anyway.

Having trouble at one of the final bosses is why I stopped playing Metroid Prime 1. Amazing game up to that point. I admire a challenge, but not something so incredibly difficult that I can't see the ending. I barely got through Omega Pirate and Ridley (gosh I love that dragon, never fails to put up a heck of a fight, I'd rather have him be the final boss of Metroid games). I'd always have a tiny bit of one energy tank remaining, that's how close it always was. I think I'm starting to understand the new trend of final bosses being cakewalks: The player has gone through heck, they just want to see the ending now, wasn't beating the game's equivalent of Ridley enough?

Hardest Mario game? SMB2 (not sure why you're all saying the Japanese version, unless you're using that to distinguish from the Lost Levels). SMB2 (the Mario-ized Doki Doki Panic) is unconventional and difficult. Maybe that's part of why it's hard, we may call ourselves Mario masters but we're not Doki Doki Panic masters. I forget how far I got normally, but all I remember was getting past Triclyde (W2 boss) and not getting much further. Only with a lot of save states in an emulator did I finally get near the end.
While SMB2 Lost Levels is hard too, I managed to get to... well, I don't remember how far I got without warps, but I got to world 7. SMBDX is the only version of SMB1 that I've been able to beat, so I'm not sure whether I can say yet that I've finally beat SMB1 after many years, but... that just means I can't say SMB1 is the toughest game.

SMB3 I eventually got through, so that's out of the race too. SMW is a cakewalk in comparison to the other games.

Yoshi's Island... kind of easy, but getting 100% in all levels, good luck. I got 100% for all normal levels except 6-6 with Bowser Jr. (99 I think... I cannot beat Bowser without getting hit once) and whatever the ski level in World 5 was (5-3 I think), getting only a 98 or 99 there, and I only got 100 on World 4 Extra (The Impossible Maze). All the other extra levels I got somewhere in the 80s or 90s. So this means I've never seen the World 5 or World 6 Extra levels.

None of the Wario Land games qualify for hardest because I've cleared them all out, with a little help from my friend (GameFAQs). It's kind of disheartening to complete a Wario Land game 100% and then think "...alright. So, what, there's nothing left for me to do now?" I mean, Wario Land levels are very enjoyable for having every block put with purpose to precisely control where you can and can't go, but you'll go through each one about 5 or 10 times before you complete the game 100%, and by then you're dead tired of them.

Seems weird you could beat the Omega Pirate but not the Metroid Prime.

Metroid Prime is one of my favorite bosses in videogaming. I just feel really cool fighting it. Most Metroid games are good at that.

The first Super Mario Bros in the original Coin-Op. It's very difficult playing it in the Coinop: I hardly defeat the first false Bowser! XD

I have to disagree. Our SMB2 is a piece of cake, but the Japanese SMB2 is pretty hard.

YIDS once you factor in the 100% goals, if you consider it a Mario game.

Oh wow, this. Seriously, I have a 100% file on YI and SMA3, but can't 100% most of the levels in YIDS for some really weird reason.

I hated how they changed the castle maze solutions for that one.  I'm on a time limit; I don't need to be wasting lives and thus coins by tediously trying every platform combination!

I hate the MP.. that is one of the reasons I have yet to finish the game. It's hard to fight him. He moves entirley too quickly in relation to Samus' turn rate. By the time I get turned in the right direction to shoot him, over half of my energy is gone because I'm standing on his toe (or some other such thing).

Come to think of it, I really just lost interest in that game before getting to the final boss. I don't like this first person Metroid business. I hope there's one that's either a side-scroller or a 3rd person game.

Super Mario Bros. 2 JPN for me too, it took me a while to beat it, getting those jump pads right is quite difficult at times.

The hardest mario game for me is Super Mario Bros. 2.  Because there is this one level towards the end that I am stuck on and can't get past.  Its the level where you have to fight Birdo and the that crab monster.  But thats the only reason its hard for me, that one level I can't get past. Forever.......

Beating Yoshi's Island DS is possible, with a gameshark!  I've played and beaten Super Mario Bros 2. and I still think getting 100% on YIDS is much harder.

I'll go with the obvious answer and say Lost Levels. I only recall beating it one and never wanting to play again.

On a side note, I've never gotten a score of 100 in Kamek's Revenge on Yoshi's Island. It's the only thing keeping me from getting a perfect file. Never played YIDS though.

There is another Mario game that I though was extremely hard, Mario Golf for the N64.  The hard part of the game is get character mode.  The A.I. is an absolute monster, it will be a character that beats your drive and it only gets anything below a birdie once in a blue moon, and the mode itself is very long and unforgiving.

The hardest game is, without doubt, Mario Party 1.

Allow me to explain myself.

Mario Party is not quite difficult in the traditional sense of the word. To beat story mode, your simple task is to defeat mini-games. There is, however, one extremely difficult mini-game that makes beating the rest of the game impossible. I'm not sure of its name, but it involves a river raft and savage shy guys. I've never been entirely sure why these vicious brutes want to spear the various characters.  I happen to think that this game's programmers were mad. The wild shy guys do not make this level difficult. It is the control method. If, by the end of the mini-game, your palms are not blistered, there is clearly something wrong. After all the pain, you are afraid to turn the game on.

Mario Party 1. Hardest game ever.

Post by: N64 Chick on August 26, 2008, 09:24:11 PM
The mini-game in question is Paddle Battle, one of the dreaded spin-the-stick games. I'm not too bad at these actually and have never gotten blisters from it like many people seem to have. I say that the Mini-Game Coaster in MP2 is harder than Mini-Game Island in MP1.

Also, an interesting way to handle Get Character mode in Mario Golf. Earn DK in Ring Shot and just use him. He can out-drive every character in Get Character except the last one. That's what I did anyway.

Never got blisters, only thoroughly worn analog sticks.

Those stick-spin things are probably the reason the original Mario Parties have yet to grace(?) the VC.

I beat YIDS... just not with 100%.

Only the first one had the control stick spinning, and Paddle Battle is actually easier if you don't spin the control stick at 130 miles an hour.

Well it may be because people were not meant to spin a plastic stick at twelve million miles per minute!

The Mario Party series should have gotten rid of the button mashing and rotation mini-games.  They are what made the game so hard.
Title: Re: The Hardest Mario Game
Post by: ShadowBrain on August 27, 2008, 03:00:13 PM
Well, there's only so many minigames you can do with the same three or four buttons and a joystick. Hence, mashing.
Title: Re: The Hardest Mario Game
Post by: Toad on August 27, 2008, 06:35:43 PM
They could have easily come up with another form of control for those types of games. I recall the C-Buttons not being used at all (save for minor things like reading the rules in the minigame intro screens).

MP's 5 and 6 (or was it 6 and 7?) started using the entire controller, having the C-Stick as part of the control scheme in some of the games.

What I'd like to see is less of the Press the button repeadtley/as fast as you can/rotation games and more of the other types of games.

MP8 was a step in the right direction. I don't recall a single button masher in that game (though, I didn't play it nearly as long as the oterh MP games).

The Wario Ware games I've played are twisted and smooth.  Twisted is by far the best handheld game to feature the motion thingy.  The mini-games are good, wacky fun and there is a good amount of features like the souvenirs, it also manages to be challenging without feeling cheap.  Smooth was a great game, but it just wasn't as good as twisted, it was just missing something.

Personally, I had a little trouble with SMB2J at first, but to me it isn't as hard as everyone is saying it is. I don't know which Mario game I think is the hardest because I have still yet to play them all. I did play all the RPGs, some sport games, and most of the platformers, though.

Are you serious or are you being "sarcastic".  I can't tell since I don't have a sarcasm detector/brain.

I'm being truthful (unless beating the Shadow Queen, but not Bonetail counts as 'finished' in PM:TTYD). In most of the games, I am only 1 or 2 shines/stars that I still haven't got (though not through lack of trying).

EDIT: I have actually beaten Bowser in PM (but that game can never be finished anyway - seeing as you can't save after beating Bowser).

I'm finally decent at SMB2 (american) after owning it for several years, so I guess that doesn't qualify.

SMB2(j) is definitely hard, but I beat it all the way through.

None of the 2-D platformers or RPGs are really any problem,
I'd have to say SM64 because of the last couple courses.
