Video Game Chat / Re: Fav Mario Party Game
« on: February 27, 2008, 09:14:15 PM »
I played the Minigame Island a lot early on, since it unlocked lots of stuff and let me hone my skills on all the mini-games with their special coin quotas.  Tug Of War always took a long time to get past, though.  It was nice that you could backtrack and save after every mini-game, rather than having to do a bunch of games in a row on a limited number of lives like the Mini-Game Coaster in Mario Party 2.

I also liked how Mario Party 1 used some songs from other Mario games, such as the overworld and underground stage songs from Super Mario Brothers 1 and the Iced Land and Dark Land map songs from Super Mario Brothers 3.  I don't think Mario Party 2 used any songs from previous games.  But I did like how it fixed the 1-vs.-3 and 2-vs.-2 games to give new coins to the winners rather than take from the losers.  But it also has fewer boards than Mario Party 1!  But it also has dueling.  And Bowser with silly new identities like in the Super Show!  And not-quite-Bowser-Junior.  And some boring games of luck.  Um, oh well.

If you can't tell, I've only played the first two games.  I guess that's enough, considering that everyone keeps saying the series jumps the shark after 3.

Yeah, that's why I stay away from Pokemon games now.  I'm too addicted to the "MUST FILL IN SAVE FILE 100%" concept to play an RPG that's not designed to let you "have it all" very easily.

Well, believe it.

They put Ninjis and Bob-ombs (and Pidgits) in SMW.
You forgot Pokey! </GWBush>

Hmm, I always thought the "dinosaur" thing was a hasty change to the English version of Super Mario World, made to appeal to kids into the whole dinosaur fad and Jurassic Park was out yada yada...
I mean, come on.  Rex has wings.  Who thinks up a silly winged dinosaur and doesn't call it a dragon?

You know what I'm gonna call Yoshi?  A DRAGOSAUR.

Thing is, in Yoshi's Story, they were baby Yoshis, so a baby-sounding voice worked. But it seems a little odd to have the exact same voice for the adult Yoshis.
I agree.  But then again, didn't Kamek call you "Yoshi-baby" in Yoshi's Island?  And the "baby Yoshies" of Yoshi's Story weren't THAT much smaller than the Yoshies in other games.  What is a Yoshi's lifecycle, anyway?

Yeah, Jaleel White did the best Sonic voice.  I don't see why they can't hire him for the games.

Red space, and also all the ghost houses, right?  Or just most of them?

Anyway, yeah, it's good to learn the color-coding of a game early on.  Like in Kirby's Adventure, where you have to realize that if a level door stays brown when you beat it, that means you still need to find a secret switch there.  I just hate when games expect me to distinguish bright green from bright yellow, because I'm color-blind enough that I can't judge the difference very easily.  "Will THIS egg turn the enemies into stars?  I don't know!"  "Should I hop onto that mushroom or THAT mushroom?  I just don't know until it's too late!"

Luigi very clearly coughs out fireballs in the SMAS+SMW version of Super Mario World.
That was the first and last time he's ever done that, though.
And Super Mario Advance 2 retconned that again by changing Luigi's sprites to look more like his Super Mario Advance 1 sprites.
I can forgive the developers for that, however, since it's possible they were working off the original Super Mario World and weren't aware that Luigi's graphics had already been updated.

The SMB movie represents Mario and Luigi's first entrance to the Mushroom Kingdom. In current games, Mario and Luigi are very familiar with the kingdom and their reputation has become common knowledge virtually everywhere. They've probably been there for at least ten years, putting them around 35 - 40 right now. If the SMB movie were canon, that is.
I'm still trying to come up with theories that make the DiC cartoons canon with the games somehow, along with the idea that the live-action movie's universe is a divergent timeline created when Bowser got stuck in dinosaur times at the end of Mario's Time Machine.

By the way, has anyone suggested putting some of the best ideas from this topic into the Wild Mass Guessing section of TV Tropes?

I still think they should have just dubbed the anime movie into English.  Better yet, dub it with the actors from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
