When I eventually* get a Wii U I plan to transfer my Wii account to it and am thinking of either putting it in the basement for my daughter and/or home brewing it.  It can also be used to play GCN discs that the Wii U won't support if I remember correctly.  I already have a GCN with a Game Boy Player for that though.

What will/would you do?  Move it to another TV?  Trade in?  EBay?  Homebrew?  Sledgehammer, speed bump, multistory drop?

What did you do with other previous systems?  PS2, Xbox, etc?  I wish I still had my PS2 since my PS3 w/ BC's drive stopped working.  I kept my GCN for the GBplayer.  I gave away my old PC, but took apart the HDD.

*I didn't get a Wii U deluxe pre-order and am short on cash for a while anyway.

Mine's losing the ability to read discs, so I'll be keeping it around for emulation and running Project M in USB Loader. But since it already can't read Thousand-Year Door I'm gonna want to back up some of my favorite GameCube games as well, so I won't have to hook up a GameCube every time I wanna play one and deal with the super ugly blurry gross RCA cables

D'oh.

Don't know why I put GBP in the poll options, but I'm not deleting it now out of fear of deleting previous votes.

My old Wii will most likely be banished to the basement to be used as a GameCube.

« Reply #4 on: September 30, 2012, 07:23:52 PM »
I'll be keeping it around; having the two might actually be useful to me. Plus with my GameCube we'll still be able to have Four Swords fun!

EDIT: I voted change room/TVs.

Mine makes a worryingly loud humming/buzzing/whirring noise that makes one think the disc is about to be launched like a shuriken, but I'll still need it for the likes of TTYD, SMS, and LoZ:WW.

She will gracefully retire to my shelf of old video games.
As a game that requires six friends, an HDTV, and skill, I can see why the majority of TMK is going to hate on it hard.

None of those. Both my Wiis will probably never be used again, but I won't sell or throw them away. They will follow me my whole life, sitting in closets and corners but never being used just like the SNES and N64 before them.

I don't see myself getting a Wii U so it'll probably still serve as a Wii.

Considering how foolishly I got rid of my Gamecube, it'll keep fulfilling its current purpose playing Viewtiful Joe and Other Such Hits.

I may use mine in the basement for games like SMS and 1000 Year Door unless we get reasonably priced HD version on virtual console as was recently suggested on Nintendo Life.  I'd put more credence in that article if it was from Megabyte or not source for a gaming mag.

What would you consider reasonable for a digital download of an HD version of a GCN game?  $20?

I also need to research hacking a Wii to play full game installs from an HDD when said Wii has the latest OS upgrade.  PM any ideas please...

Eh... I'll probably try to give it away. I have two Gamecubes buried in a Tupperware in my closet, but I don't want my Wii to meet that fate.

EDIT: Wait... since the Wii U can't play Gamecube games, I'll probably just stack my Wii on top of it or something. My GCN games still get a lot of play time.

My brother has a GameCube but is constantly playing my Wii, so I'll just sell the GameCube and give him the Wii after transferring the data from the Wii to the Wii-U. I'm killing a crapload of birds with one stone!

Hm, after some thought, I've decided I might sell mine. I want to fix it up a little (it's gotten beat up a bit over the years) before I part with it. Also, I'm definitely gonna hold onto it until I get all the data I need loaded into the Wii U. Either way, my GameCube should handle any incompatibility issues I have in the Wii's absence.

Speaking of the Wii U, I literally picked up the last copy they had from my local Fry's; they said I was lucky to come in so early, because for some reason they didn't have me pay for it all up front (which is standard procedure there) yesterday, when I asked to pre-order. Otherwise, they probably would've just sold it. In got the $449 package with the addition of a Wii Motion+/Nunchuk and NSMBU.

I just ordered a deluxe from Target.com.  Once I've completed the system transfer I'll put the old Wii in the basement with our old TV for my daughter.  I'm doing the same think with the PS3, but the old one's Blu-ray drive doesn't work and the hard drive is *only 80G so it'll be unplugged most of the time.  Otherwise I could use it as a heater and white noise generator running folding@home.

*This seems strange to say since I started programming games with audio tapes as storage.

Figure this is as good a place as any to ask:

How long does the initial Wii U System Update normally take? About five minutes in, the progress bar hasn't even begun moving.

Mine is roughly 10% done after just over 30 minutes.

It's a shame that Mario platformers don't come equipped with a level editor. I guess too many kids would upload levels consisting of nothing but the word 'SCROTUM' written in Coins.

The term "day" is generally used to describe a time period of twenty-four hours. A month is generally thirty of these days, though some months consist of thirty-one days, and one month is either twenty-eight or twenty-nine days depending on the year (a period of either 365 or 366 days).

Why is there no 'keep it' option? I now have my NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Xbox, PS2, 360, Wii, PS3, and Wii U all hooked up to the same TV. The only other console I have that isn't hooked up is a Japanese N64 with 64DD.

I still have unfinished Wii games, and I would rather just play them on the Wii rather than trying to transfer data and stuff to the Wii U.

Four of those options are "keep it," but I get what you mean. I'll probably keep my Wii when I get a Wii U, but the Wii will remain connected to the same display it is now, while the Wii U will be connected to my desktop monitor like my PS3 and 360 are, and none of the options here address that possibility. (I guess "hack it," but that's how it is already.)

« Reply #31 on: March 18, 2013, 09:52:28 PM »
Yeah, that's what I mean. There's no option that corresponds to what I did, which is leave the Wii hooked up as is,and also hook up my Wii U to the same TV.

As it happens, my Wii U, hooked up to the TV with an HDMI cable, suffers from a noticeable split-second lag.  Whether this is the fault of the Wii U itself, of the use of an HDMI cable, of the TV, or of how I've got it set up, I don't know.  But I haven't been able to completely fix it.  Most games are still playable, though a little harder (I kept missing platform-edge jumps in NSMBU).  Rhythm Heaven Fever, however, is totally unplayable.
So I've got the Wii hooked up to the TV alongside the Wii U.  Pretty much just for that game.

problem

That same thing happened to a TV that I was using as a computer monitor some time ago. The cause turned out to be some video effects that the TV was applying to the picture to make movies look better. A valiant effort on the TV's part, to be sure, but the mistake was in assuming that I was using the HDMI port for a Blu-Ray player or some such video device. Perhaps you could look for that sort of a setting, and see if turning it off would get rid of that delay. That's what worked for me.

That's part of why I use a PC monitor as a TV (for game systems, anyway) instead of the other way around. A lot of HDTVs have obnoxious post-processing effects that can't be disabled and result in horrible input lag, which is murder for any sort of timing-based gaming.

« Reply #36 on: March 19, 2013, 05:08:40 PM »
HDMI video is lag-free on my TV but the audio gets offset a bit. Since this is murder to my rhythm-loving lifestyle I use RCA cable audio with HDMI video on 360 and PS3. The Wii U doesn't let you split it up like this (yet???) so I begrudgingly use component video (which still supports HD so whatevs).

My TV has per-input designations that supposedly affect how the input is processed.  It also has a number of options for the processing it does.  I have tinkered with these as much as I am able, and nothing makes any significant difference.
Oddly, when the PS3 is hooked up to the TV via HDMI, all the processing things are completely disabled.  Like, I couldn't turn on that stupid "TruMotion" if I wanted to.  I wish I knew how to make the Wii U act like that, too.

LD, did the component input solve the lag problem completely?  I was considering it, but didn't want to spend the money on a cable if it were to end up with the same problem.

« Reply #39 on: March 19, 2013, 08:49:02 PM »
Yes, and I knew it would because it was the same lag that happens with HDMI audio on my TV, from any source. I've never had a problem with HDMI video though, so if you're missing jumps that sounds like more a video issue.

My favorite lag-testing Wii game is BIT.TRIP CORE. The NSMBU title screen is also surprisingly useful, where all four characters perform a grand buttstomp precisely on the final note of the song's intro.

« Reply #40 on: March 22, 2013, 07:30:40 PM »
Yeah, it was straight-up lag.  The video and audio were nicely synced with one another, just a split second late.
Anyway, I bought a component cable and managed to get the thing set up.  It did the trick, and performed without any lag.  It was a used cable, and had a little bit of ghosting going on (one of the color channels was a tiny bit offset, maybe?)  But it was barely noticeable, and there was no lag.
But in the process of setting it up, I somehow discovered the one option on my TV that actually makes a difference.  An option that I had previously dismissed as meaningless.  After toying with it, I found it eliminated the video lag in even the HDMI input, leaving me with just the offset audio problem.  And then I discovered the "audio sync" section...

And now I have a component cable to return.
Go Moon!

Anyone have a comparison of Runner on different systems/consoles.  I'm leaning towards Wii U and/or Steam, but I'm willing to go for the best in a game the depend so much on a lack of lag.
