In this game, we shall post amazing pictures of amazing things. If you get amazed, you lose.
Now check out this image of a lake on the ocean floor.

Please notify me if the first image appears as a grimacing green smiley face.
It does, why? Is it some sort of illusion?
EDIT: Ohhhh OK. fix'd

I think it's a hotlink.

Precisely. Snopes.com doesn't seem to appreciate random passers-by consuming their bandwidth without notice. Well, here's a link (http://www.snopes.com/photos/arts/bathroom.asp#photo).

The word bed looks like a bed.

For me, at least, it's harder to gauge amazement than shock, hilarity, or even nostalgia. Still, under my own undefinable (and for all purposes, tentative) guidelines, I lost to CE7 and Weegee. And maybe PL, penguinwizard, and Glorb (primarily the latter). And yes, dc, Hubble's Deepest Field is incredibly amazing, but Iearned about it a while back. To be honest, I don't amaze all that easily, so I actually tend to determine relative amazement by what seems... the least mundane.
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fgonintendo.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fscan0001.jpg&hash=f119e989192022e678cbee1362bd3c22)

I don't know if I'm amazed, but I'm surely impressed. I want a jigsaw puzzle of that image. I loves The Simpsons puzzled like that. I was going to make a Mario image like it once, but didn't have a large enough stock of varying colors.

I lost at "Man carves NES controller into his flesh," but for the wrong thread.
-
I lost at Glorb's post.
-
Yes. Glorb's post there actually inspired in me the topic's goal emotion, which is incredibly rare in these threads.
-
If Glorb's last post had been submitted in the "You Think to Yourself, 'Hmm, That's Actually Moderately Interesting', You Lose" thread, I'd have certainly lost.

Yes, I mourned the closure of the Harem all the more upon seeing that picture...

As for Glorb's picture, there's an obvious explanation: Everything in Japan is anime, which includes real life. No doubt if the construction workers were more clearly visible, it would be apparent that they have eyes the size of grapefruits. Anyways, this sequence of photographs (http://www.snopes.com/photos/accident/culvert.asp) was deemed to be authentic by Snopes.com.

No Snopes picture can faze me; I've been going to that site for years and seen just about everything there is to see.

I lost.

Put sparkling water in the freezer for a couple of hours then get it out and open it. Report back with the results.

I tried making a Sierra Mist popsicle last week or so. Something mildly interesting did happen, but I'm not sure if it would be anything like that...

Wouldn't you know it: All of the truly amazing abodes are little more than impressive Photoshop jobs... typical.
As for nenson's post, unless I'm mistaken, one of the screens depicted on SMB3's box contains some element not included in the actual game. Additionally, as noted TMK's Bugs and Glitches section, there's a grammatical error in Toad's card-flip game explanation.

I assumed as much that's what he was referring to, but that doesn't seem all that amazing, especially given what website this is. Now, that screenshot on the back of Twilight Princess with a magic meter...

Has Toad really been saying "THANK YOU" all this time? His hand gestures imply a different statement.

What makes spaghetti, ham, lettuce and nondescript brown paste so revolting in your eyes? In fact, that culinary creation looks almost as tasteful as my first comment wasn't!

If I told you, you wouldn't find it acceptable.

I wouldn't eat that even if it was the last piece(s) of food on earth.

No! .. or rather, this box is the "corrected" box. The odl box had a plains level with a yellow background in the middle picture, which resembeld an area from the Starman running level in World.. 7 I think.

I don't think the Retainers are flipping anyone off.
I'm getting really tired of hearing about this. You know, what isn't in SMB?! Communism, racism, capitalism, drugs.. why can't people just take it for what it is: a game. Go find another game/series to mess with.
-
Ever since the inexplicable foreclosure of communist-mario.com, obsessive cultural conspiracy theorists have been searching for new angles, hence your vulgar hand gestures and blatant sarcasm. On that note, having never heard of this alleged Mario/racism connection, I Googled it. Thankfully he's kidding, but... yeah (http://www.uvm.edu/~chmartin/dk.html). Similarly, below is the single greatest article of Mario-themed Soviet propaganda since Stalin grew a moustache:

Wasn't that the subject of one of my %100 percent awesome April Fool's Day pranks?

SB, that Snopes story both amazed me and gave my inner Steve Irwin a panic attack. Crikey!

That was amazing. Looks like a real life Escher drawing.

WHOA DUDE THATS TRIPPY
THEY REALLY DO LOOK DIFFERENT
BUT THEIR NAWT

Um, how, exactly?
-
It's an optical illusion. They look like different shades of gray, but that's just because of the shadow.

Not on that picture though, that's for sure.

...But there's no gray in that image.
I'M TRIPPIN' BALLS MAN

I see no grey! AAAHHH!!!

Maybe you have to be colorblind?

I'm amazed, but only by how much of a stretch of the imagination that illusion takes.

What's more amazing than that actual broadcast is that people once had the patience to listen to radio shows. As for the Mario-san artwork, however, I MUST have that on a t-shirt, mug, or toilet paper roll. Wowzers.
-
Wow, that's-- a clear loss.
Incidentally, the writing in the red areas are just names, such as "Great Demon King Koopa/Kuppa,"Merio (although in small katakana, it reads Mario)", and... 耀る or 擢る, and I have no idea what that's all about.
And, of course, on the left scroll is "Super Mario Brothers."

Agreed. It basically takes the concept of "the Mushroom Kingdom as a semi-realistic urban metropolis" as originally seen in SMB: The Movie, and executes it a lot better. Lost to the "gaping hole" illusion. Better yet, that getup could double as a costume item if you plan on trick-or-treating as an Al-Qaeda insurgent.
I'm still waiting for episode seven, which got delayed two weeks.
I was captivated enough by the concept to watch all six available episodes in one sitting. The costumes really make it, at least in my opinion.

A WWI-themed CoD would certainly offer a change of pace. Besides, what could possibly be more satisfying than dishing those Krauts a hearty serving of mustard gas?
-
World War II is easy to make a game about. Everyone knows Nazis suck. A World War I game, done properly, would require some deep treatment of the tragic meaninglessness of the war rather than just being an all-out arcadish shooter. It'd be really cool to see a time-traveling RPG where you have to try to prevent WWI in order to also prevent WWII and the Cold War. How come no one ever makes time-traveling RPGs set in the early 20th century, seriously? That would be fun.
Bowser does look rather ox-like now that I think about it. I'll count it as a loss.
-
What we need is a prehistoric CoD. Cavemen beating the hell out of each other with rocks and sticks and what have you.
-
How about Call of Duty: Dawn of Existance? Taking place approximately 3.6 billion years ago, the player takes control of a squadron of elite single-celled organisms attempting to defend their puddle of primordial ooze from advancing bacterial invaders.
-
No. Cavemen beating the hell out of each other with rocks and sticks is far more satisfying.

Same. By the way, we need a list of games whose geography mirrors Japan, because I could have sworn there's quite a few of those.
It's only a matter of time before there's fanart with Cubone and Kangaskhan. There probably already is.

I used it because images, at times, portray frustration more than words.
But really, Chuck Norris Facts? Does it really make a difference? They "both" suck.

So nowadays anything that appears more than once is a meme? That's amazing.
That's the definition of a meme. The concepts of a meme (very vague and common in all aspects of life) and an internet meme/fad (much more specific kind of thing) are being blended together, which isn't exactly correct.

“Claus” and “Lucas” are anagrams of eachother.

It took some hard looking before I could see the face of a screaming green-haired boy above his actual face.
-
It's obviously not intentional, but that Brian/Birdo thing (at first, I thought Weegee was saying he lost to my last post and something Birdo or Bird Person-related) is... well, the very fact that that comparison can even be made is amazing enough.
-
Post 3460 (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=232550&page=70)
I lost upon realizing what it was.
I also lost to how many people didn't notice that the bush and cloud sprites are the same in SMB. I noticed that two days after I got my SMBDX cart...
I understand the wizard thing now, but I don't see a face on top of his head. Just the head-dress..
You didn't notice until SMBDX that the cloud and bush sprites are the same?? I lost to that..
-
I'd never played SMB before I got SMBDX, so two days isn't bad.

Considering the game's intentionally campy, safe-for-Wii-owner-consumption premise, I think that's a perfectly appropriate box.

Nothing compared to the 11-minute long one synced to music.
-
No offense, but that one is for noobs. The creator's use of nonexistant custom blocks really killed the point. If it had been kept within the realm of SMW's actual physics, however, that would be another story.
-
If it had been kept within the realm of SMW's actual physics, however, that would be another story.
Kind of off-topic, but I just noticed that the second half (at least) had physics similar to an ice level; watch Mario's legs during the ending animation.
-
Nothing compared to the 11-minute long one synced to music.
I'm tempted to agree with that literally--as in nothing ever made, period, compared to that.
-
Guys, that was all ice level physics. You can switch that on and off for entire levels.
-
My issue with the undeniably cool eleven-minute opus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsVJGRuHA8k) is that it uses Yoshi-patterned "jump blocks", stone blocks which rocket you in any direction and other elements not included in the actual game. Ice level physics are one thing, but... yeah.
-
I don't see why you don't object to hacking the levels, but do object to hacking a couple block textures to make them fit better in the level plan.
Those elements are all native to the game engine; they just look different.

Font colour is still disabled. Just saying. Anyway, having a "mixed system" for driving sounds pretty cool. Why be restricted to driving with the flow of traffic when you can weave between oncoming hunks of deadly steel?

I agree. That would be fun.

What's really amazing is that the creators of OoT needed twice the cartridge space to make a game half as good as 64. Anyways, I'm sure everyone knows this already, but the following is the result of folding an American twenty dollar bill in a certain fashion:

Mayhaps so, but for awesomeness per square inch, SM64 still reigns supreme.
-
P.S. OoT uses a 256-megabit cart, whereas SM64 is 64-megabit.
And yeah I'm not saying OoT is better, either.
-
SM64 has certainly aged better. OoT is a great game at its core, but it desperately needs a remake. Mostly to fix the 1-heart beep. Definitely the most annoying one in the entire series, though LttP is a pretty close second.
-
I can't tell what it is. If it's meant to be a UFO, your license to internet should be revoked posthaste... No offense.
Honestly though Weegee, you've never heard of Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot?
-
He's too busy staying up-to-date on useless 4chan matters and such...No offense.
-
Heck, I'd never heard of Carl Sagan prior to this discussion. On a related note,
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b2/Eagle_nebula_pillars.jpg
-
Nebulas are always a sight to behold.
-
I never understood the appeal of astronomy or space, so that nebula picture means nothing to me. And I've never heard of the Pale Blue Dot either. I don't watch Carl Sagan.
One webpage said the QWERTY layout came into existence because someone could type "typewriter" quickly with it. And look, all the letters of "typewriter" are on the top row.
-
Yeah, and so are U O and Q. Seems like it would be much quicker to have all those letters in the center of the keyboard instead of all spread out on the top row.
Carl Sagan isn't even someone you can watch anymore since he's dead, and I feel like yelling at all of you for how ashamed you should be for not knowing about one of the most influential and well-known scientific minds of the 20th century.
-
scientific minds
Pfft. He didn't sing or play sports or do anything else that mattered, so how can you blame us?
-
I never understood the appeal of astronomy or space, so that nebula picture means nothing to me.
I'm not going to criticize you for being disinterested in space/astronomy, but the appeal is the vastness of it all. Think. We're but a small, fragile dot in the middle of an enormous universe. Every war, every discovery, every human that has ever lived...it's all taken place on a small blue dot. That's what Carl Sagan was trying to tell us. "Astronomy is a humbling experience."
-
Am I correct in assuming that this Carl Sagan thing is a joke blown out of proportion?
-
Carl Sagan also wrote fantasy books and was a pothead. As for the Pale Blue Dot... yeah, amazing, I suppose, but there's been so many other awesome space pics since when I'm assuming that picture was taken that it's not a blowout loss.
And concerning my last post, I'm not saying one game is better than the other--I just made that statement for the purpose of the image.
http://www.papercraftmuseum.com/life-sized-link-images/
-
Carl Sagan also wrote fantasy books and was a pothead.
I assume you don't like reading fantasy books like you don't like reading articles?
-
Carl Sagan just wanted to protect us from the infinite cosmic horrors of infinite horror from the cosmos.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
Carl Sagan sad that. Carl Sagan also got a grant from the government to begin a U.S. military initiative to combat a threat that he called the "Elder Gods", using Tesla coils, steam-powered airships, and clockwork robots.
-
i think carl sagan is a pretty cool guy. eh does science and doesn't afraid of anything.
-
You didn't just... no, he did.
I assume you don't like reading fantasy books like you don't like reading articles?
Uh...

Twas meant to be a playful jab/joke. It sounds a lot different over the internet.

... Nope, can't think of a response. Probably just glued or duct-taped them together. Maybe they're being held up by invisible strings made out of soda cases.
I'd love to see someone Photoshop together some other Mario thing using soda cases. Maybe Yoshi, just use Sprite cases for the body, Coke cases for the tongue and saddle and spikes on the back of his head, Mug Root Beer cases for the boots. Diet Dr. Pepper cases for the eyes. I believe those black cases are Coke Zero.

The complete game of "Critical Path" as a YouTube interactive game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUamoP_H7eo). Critical Path was a really old FMV choose-your-adventure sort of game. Kat's some army gal on a mission, you and Kat travel by helicopter to the bad guy's place until it's shot down by a missile. You're injured but make your way into a control panel room, hooked up to all the rooms in the bad guy place. Kat has to travel into the place alone, and your job is to fiddle with buttons to save Kat while you're watching the security cameras tracking her every move.
In short, you have to press the right buttons at the right times to save Kat. The YouTube version reduces the choices to "let Kat live" and "let Kat die", so you won't have any trouble getting through this. Just sit back and enjoy the... horribly dated graphics and bad acting.
But this game was awesome back in the day, man. I could never get past the catwalk part... thankfully the YouTube version skips that scene entirely since Kat could die a thousand ways in that particular scene.
The YouTube version only takes about 20 minutes to play. A behind-the-scenes video (which you get to see after you finish the YouTube version) talks about the game on the news and how it's pioneering a new genre of computer games. The newscaster claims the game will take 8-9 hours to complete. And back then I'd believe it -- the control panel has like 20 buttons and you have to read a journal written by the bad guy in order to get enough clues to know what to press and when. All I cared about was getting to the end of the story, so this YouTube version's a lifesaver.

Kind of lost, since I saw it before. Do you think automatic Mario levels would go well with DJ Hero songs?

Pac-Man is a game where you wander aimlessly through a maze of dark, featureless corridors, relentlessly chased by the undead. Your combat abilities against them are minimal, and your ammunition extremely limited — there are only four per map. Even if you do ‘kill’ your enemies, they are not truly dead, merely slightly inconvenienced. They can never be truly killed, and live for the sole purpose of hunting you until you’re dead. Do you get what I’m saying? Pac-Man is the first survival horror game.

Why can't other game series have as many YAYL moments as the Pokemon series?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that really is a nose on DIGLETT. Look at the shadowing on most official art, and especially side-views in the anime.

Well, honestly, I never seriously thought it was a mouth--it's just a very unnerving way of looking at the way the nose is drawn.

Indeed, LD.
-
Well, still, there's a bunch of other Pokemon amaze factoids that haven't been debunked. Yet.
My personal favorite (I forget if it's fact or fiction) is the realization that Cubone wears his mother's skull on his head.
-
That's canonical fact, as confounding as it may be. Such information dictates that all Cubones produce only one offspring before dying, and that two Marowaks are thereby incapable of producing Cubone babies. Also, the fact that Cubones emerge from their eggs already wearing skulls contradicts everything else. Eeughh.
-
The conflation of individuals with groups as a whole causes a lot of problems when translated from Japanese to English. Like how we get all pedantic over whether a specific Magikoopa is Kamek, or if a specific Toad is "The" Toad, or object to the portrayal of any member of the Birdo species as actually female. Cultural differences are weird.

It's still cool.

“Super Smash” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LWG05S30Ig)
-
PenguinWizard: looking at that set of shelves gave me vertigo. It was still amazing (I didn't lose though. Good effort)
ShadowBrain: That was an amazing video. Also, someone with some art skill finally put Toad in a positive role though, I didn't care much for the drug implications. I lost.
-
The video was well-made, although I don't appreciate attempts to "badassify" Mario in such a mainstream way.
-
Frankly, I've never had a problem with, er, "unique" interpretations of characters like Mario, Luigi, etc.

Lost. Hard. Wow.

Lost. That's most deserving of a Frank Barone "Holy Crap".
There's a recent article about Steam coming to Mac, with some cool teaser images. (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/03/valve-teases-upcoming-half-life-release-for-mac/#) But the last one particularly caught my eye:

That's more in "You Say 'Awesome,' You Lose" territory, in my opinion.
-
The Koopa Troopa will be upside down unless the player is a lefty (and it's not strung for that in the picture). That, or the picture is mirrored.
-
I saw (and, I believe, posted) that before. The explanation for his upside-downness: He was flipped by Mario!
-
Mario flipped off a Koopa? Wow. I guess he really does come from Brooklyn.

Jafar's skin is not darker than Aladdin's. If anything, he's actually slightly lighter.

What amazed me:
You know that Jeremy Irons voiced and sung as Scar in "The Lion King". But during the final part of "Be Prepared" (right after "You won't get a sniff without me"), he was sick or whatever and Jim Cummings filled in for him. Jim did all of the last part, but he did such a great job mimicking Jeremy that you can't tell it's someone else.

It's safe to say I lost, to the site in general and to BP's alternate name (though in a different fashion).

BP's alternate name is even better when you type in his real name as well, but I didn't lose.

Oh, I forgot to mention--for what it's worth, that prostitute warning sign is Italian.

[darn] YOU INTERNET
-
That is the best FFFFFFFUUUUUUUU face I've ever seen.
Oh, and I lost.
-
I lost more to that face moreso than I did the actual, already amazing comic.
Go to Akinator's website.[url] I dare you to stump him. He's even gotten Lars Ulrich of all people, for god's sake! Seriously, man, this thing is awesome. (http://us.akinator.com)
-
Fixed link. (http://en.akinator.com/) Holy [dukar].
-
Snap, it guessed Maxwell Smart entirely too easily, just from fairly vague hints. EDIT: Stumped him with Chuck Quizmo from Paper Mario, though.
-
Chuck Quizmo probably isn't in his database.
OH GOD HE GUESSED RICK JAMES, THOUGH
EDIT: AND ALL FIVE OF THE BEATLES, INCLUDING SEAN CONNERY
-
I would have lost to Weegee's movie poster post and to
AND ALL FIVE OF THE BEATLES, INCLUDING SEAN CONNERY
but this isn't YLYL.
Edit: He guessed Toad (the race). He isn't too bad at this, but I was thinking of Toad the character (my username's namesake).
-
Holy crap. I lost hard.
(I finally stumped him with Mr. Sax from Rayman)
-
I stumped him my first time.
-
Stumped him with Mr. B Natural.
-
Stumped him with Ranger Rick. But I'm surprised he guessed Ozymandias from Ozy and Millie.
Considering the people playing this thing will probably be people thinking of memes or obscure characters, I predict this thing will be "amazing" for quite a while. Please send in all the obscure characters you can!
-
Chuck Quizmo probably isn't in his database.
Believe it or not, he is, and he was one of the suggestions after I stumped him.
-
Holeee [dukar], this is crazy.
EDIT: Haha, stumped on my second try. I thought DJ Shadow, it gave me Greg Gillis. DJ Shadow is one of the available choices, though.
-
He got Torgo, Joe Biden, Raye Penber, Plok, Blanky, and friggin' Xenophilius Lovegood. Stumped him with Stanley the Talking Fish, though.
-
I played with Akinator back when 4chan was obsessing over him quite some time ago, but don't remember what character I stumped him with then. One that probably wouldn't work now, I'm guessing.
First three characters I tried were Hatsune Miku, Saber, and Arcueid Brunestud, and he got them all right after question twenty. I then figured I'd go with something that a bunch of people hadn't probably already gone with and picked Ulala; he got her after one failed guess (on twenty-four). I then went with Dr. Horrible, who he got after question seventeen. Agent J took him twenty; the King of All Cosmos and Hakurei Reimu each took him only sixteen. I finally fully stumped him with UFO-CO.
-
I've only legitimately stumped Akinator once. Other than that he lives up to his title.
-
He akinates?
-
Yeah, to pictures o' yo momma.
I almost got him with Mac Gargan - the character's only been played five times.
-
Thing is, there are plenty of really obscure characters I'm at least 90% sure would stump him - Exelica (from Triggerheart Exelica), the dude from Ikaruga, the guy on the Phalanx cover - but those are no fun.
He got the main character from Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. He did not get Satan (from Madou Monogatari/Puyo Puyo). He got Ritsu Sohma (from Fruits Basket) on his second guess (after question thirty).
-
Stumped him with Deezer.
-
It got Advice Dog.
And SpengBab.
-
And Weegee (from Mario is Missing, not the FFgoer), after 20 guesses.
-
He akinates?
Akinator the Web Genius is his full name.
-
MIM

I've got nothing amazing. But there's this country singer guy who's looking too cool despite being on an all-pink cover, impressive hair, and his actual guitar-playing's pretty good too. (http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2009/04/cutout_bin_ricky_skaggs_dont_c.php#more)

My mind has been thoroughly fellated.
-
I, too, lost to that.
-
It's not quite the same, but it is pretty close, I suppose. I saw someone slow that and the pipe sound down on Modplug Tracker some time ago; turns out the latter is just a series of descending fifths (E-A-D-G-C-F, to be precise) played almost simultaneously a few times over.
-
My mind has been blown again. All three of those links are amazing.

This has probably already been posted, but...

I'm extremely fascinated by the end of the universe so I lost.

We can't even predict what the weather will be like in a week. I find myself deeply skeptical that they can predict the next seven billion years.

Likewise, but it certainly helps put things in perspective.

I lost... to those deals!

...And that's why I don't go to YTMND as much as I used to. Among several other reasons.
-
We can't even predict what the weather will be like in a week. I find myself deeply skeptical that they can predict the next seven billion years.
Oh but they can. Scientists have done an excellent job of mapping out the past, so why wouldn't they be able to determine the future? Besides, predicting the weather and determining what the universe will be like in the future are two completely different things.
I lost... to those deals!
lol

How accurate their opinion of the past is is up for debate. Really not going to get into this here, though.

Just noticed this last night while playing Yoshi's Cookie. At any rate, ever noticed the little icons (http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk21/jdaster64/ScreenHunter_04Dec251522.jpg) that appear when someone is inflicted with "Blind", "Panic" or "Slave" status on the Vs. Mode? Well, last night, I managed to cause my opponent to get all three effects at the same time (at least one was probably self-inflicted), resulting in something sort of like this (http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk21/jdaster64/ScreenHunter_02Dec251521.jpg). Well, look at the order of the icons, and then look at this (http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk21/jdaster64/ScreenHunter_01Dec251519.jpg), from the game's startup screen.

^ I always think of a Harry Potter character when I see that "Dad" guy, for some reason. Maybe crossed with Daniel-Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood.
...And I guess I lost, if only because that precise concept had never directly occured to me, but it's not inherently that amazing. Obviously, a controller needs to be contoured to the hand, and a trigger button where the index finger will rest--directly opposite a joystick--just makes sense.
-
I thought that was fairly well known. If you look at the Virtual Boy controls, it's also very similar. I'd be willing to think that Nintendo would trademark that sorta shape like they did with the cross control pad design.

Probably because of this:
<+CE7> Reading debates between PL and TK is more fun now that it's Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy arguing with each other.

Simple, but amazing. Why didn't I think of that?
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnMIhxWRGNw
Honestly, I knew most of this already, but the addition and the triangle makes it amazingly clear.
-
Fold a dollar bill in half 50 times, and it will be thick enough to reach 80% of the way to the sun. Nineteen more times and it will reach Alpha Centauri A, the closest extrasolar star. One more time and it will stretch past Sirius A, or point in a different direction to go past Epsilon Eridani, a star with two planets. One more fold, 71, will take you past Gliese 876, which has four planets.
Folding it in half 101 times would bring you just short of the former location of UDFj-39546284, a galaxy (no longer existent) that is the most distant object ever observed. One more fold would take you just past the edge of the observable universe.
At this point, the cross-sectional area of the dollar bill would be 2.04 * 10-33 square meters, or about 10 by 10 Planck lengths (equivalent to about 10-18 times the size of a proton). The Planck length is the smallest distance that can have any meaning.
At 101 folds, the thickness of the dollar bill is now equivalent to 2,535,301,200,456,458,802,993,406,410,752 bills stacked on top of one another. If you actually had that many dollar bills, it would be enough to give $362,185,885,779,494,114,713.34 to every person on earth (assuming all of them are one-dollar-bills). This would be enough for each person to pay off the United States' national debt 22,636,617 times over, or once every second from January 1 to September 17. For 102 folds, double all these numbers.
-
Fold a dollar bill in half 50 times, and it will be thick enough to reach 80% of the way to the sun.
Nuh-uh, it'd surely burn by then
-
That kind of stuff doesn't amaze me anymore because it's not possible to actually do.
-
That kind of stuff doesn't amaze me anymore because it's not possible to actually do.
That's not the point. The point is for you to realize the power of such growth. If you don't like the impossible folding example think of the CPU in your computer or the microscopic organisms in your own body.

Probably to do with the program used to record it.

Interesting. It's difficult to tell from the video, but I don't think the canvas kind of effect or shader or whatever is present on the Mario painting there.

It'd probably kill a few people from that height.

Rain and hail fall from higher than that, so I doubt it
-
Killjoy.
I read that dropping a penny from an airplane would give someone a concussion if there weren't any wind.
-
Thought of Watchmen for a second there.
-
More like if there wasn't any air. The friction between the air and anything as light as a penny will keep it from doing any significant damage. If we were in a vacuum, though... well, imagine what it would be like to drop a boulder from an airplane. A penny would fall at the same speed, and probably punch holes in people's heads.
-
Wait! So is that why you never hear about bullets hitting people and killing them on the way down after shot into the sky? Or do they?
-
They do. Thank god it's rare--to say nothing of stray horizontal bullets. My aunt's living room got hit by one of those a few months ago.
-
Here's where a guy shot a bullet (http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2008/nov/04/stray-bullet-injures-woman-texas-motor-speedway/) and five miles later it came down through a woman's RV roof, went through her arm, and lodged into a wall.
