OK, so I get to world 8-4 without using warps or retrying, I defeat the final Bowser, then I move ahead and instead of the Princess I see a door, and then after that the screen just goes black.  No World 9, not even World A, just blackness.  What's wrong here? Is this an incomplete ROM?

More likely your emulator can't process it correctly. Which one are you using?
