When I saw this video title in my notifications, I thought Nintendo accidentally uploaded their April Fools joke four weeks late, but now that I look at it, it does look really pretty. Still trying to figure out where the speakers are.

Really drives home what a good idea it was for the new console to just be called the Switch, though, because the DS naming conventions have gotten pretty incomprehensible now.

Friend Codes / Switch friend codes
« on: March 05, 2017, 05:46:45 PM »
So yeah, they're using friend codes again at least for now, but now you can send requests to a friend code instead of needing both people to register each other, so that's a lot better.

I'm 6798-2412-9010. Friend me.

Mario Chat / Miyamoto has wanted unnecessary voice clips all along
« on: October 16, 2016, 06:32:21 AM »
Pauline was originally going to say "Nice!" every time you jumped over a barrel, but it was taken out because the pronunciation was weird.

[x]

The "help help!" at the start of the level was added in Donkey Kong 94 when it was played on a Super Game Boy, but the "nice!" has sadly never been in.

Mario Chat / 1996 Super Mario 64 interview

Some highlights:
  • Mario is from Brooklyn
  • Miyamoto and Tezuka regret not adding more animal abuse
  • Luigi was removed rather late in development
  • The "trip" move (crouch -> B) is useless
  • Miyamoto expounds a bit on Mario and Zelda actually being the same series

Mario Chat / Koopaling name origins confirmed

http://kotaku.com/how-a-mario-character-was-named-after-motorheads-lemmy-1750180427

Quote from: Dayvv Brooks, Nintendo of America product analyst
“Music has always been a big part of my life. I’ve been a DJ for years and have been a music collector for even longer. When I first saw the group of seven Koopalings, music was on my mind.

The hairstyle on one of them reminded me of Ludwig von Beethoven for some reason and Ludwig von Koopa was born. Next was the one with the glasses—that has to be Roy Koopa in homage to Roy Orbison, who almost always wore glasses. Then Wendy O. Koopa (Wendy O. Williams) [and] Iggy Koopa (Iggy Pop). One looked like a loudmouth, so he was Morton Koopa Jr. from [the] loud-mouthed talk show host Morton Downey Jr. And then there was Larry. There’s no real-world equivalent—he’s not Larry Mullen Jr. from U2 or Larry King—he just looked like a Larry.

That brings us to Lemmy. In addition to being a great name, it’s perfect for a video game character. This Koopaling struck me as being the kind of character who would do his own thing, no matter what anyone else thought. I think it was those crazy eyes. Lemmy Koopa was in the crew.”

Mario Chat / Mario & Luigi & Paper
« on: June 16, 2015, 08:24:54 PM »

So Nintendo heard that we wanted a game with a story and experience points and Paper Mario in it.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI9Ic3tz2lc" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI9Ic3tz2lc</a>

I was hoping for a real Paper Mario game, but I won't say no to a new Mario & Luigi (as long as it's a real Mario & Luigi, which so far all of them have been). If both Bowsers have dialogue and both Peaches do something, this could be really good. Papercraft battles look really neat.

Interesting note: In the Treehouse stream, it was mentioned that the basic setup for the story is that Luigi is clumsy and knocks over a book and all the paper characters come out of it. It'd be nice if he'd knocked over one of the first three books so there'd be more characters than Toads, but so far it looks like it's the Sticker Star book.

Video Game Chat / Earthbound Beginnings

As announced by Itoi himself right before the Nintendo World Championships, Mother 1 is available on the Wii U Virtual Console (not the 3DS one for some reason?) right now for $7.

While it has a new official name now, so far it doesn't look like anything was changed from the rom that's out there (not even the title screen). Still has the run button and everything.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9_xJ_m8IHY" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9_xJ_m8IHY</a>
it's rated 3 in Europe, but it's T in Eagleland.

(also, the Onett Times community ("Your official source for the latest EarthBound news and information") still just has that one intro post from two years ago, which makes one wonder what the point of having that community ever was)

Mario Chat / Toad gender
« on: November 18, 2014, 10:45:14 PM »
Toads are an asexual (in the biological sense) species who choose their own gender identities, according to the producer of Captain Toad.
(that link suddenly stopped working for me in the few minutes since I started writing this post, so here's a cached version in case)

This makes sense, considering the Yoshi's Island series implies that sexual reproduction doesn't exist in the Mushroom World anyway, even for humans (or a species that at least appears human). But if this is a common and accepted thing in the Mushroom World, why is Birdo/Birdetta treated like a joke?

(Also: Captain Toad and Toadette are not siblings, but also not dating -- "it would be more accurate to say they are adventure pals"; whether there's any cannibalistic relation between Toads and power-up mushrooms is "one of the great mysteries of the Mario universe.")

Fan Creations / CE7 Writes!
« on: March 02, 2014, 11:17:12 PM »
So I'm going through the hard drive of my broken laptop, and I found this thing that I wrote in 2011, and I thought it was actually kinda good and wanted to put it somewhere. And maybe I'll post some more old stuff I've written and maybe this could get me to get off my butt and write some new stuff (that's figurative getting off my butt, as I would actually literally be sitting on my butt for most of the writing; it's a literary device). So anyway here's a thing:

October 3

For the second time I can remember, a customer, a woman, around 40 years old, came in to return pants that her husband would no longer be needing, because he had died. This one's name was Bette.

The pants were bought back in February. Her husband passed in July (she used “deceased,” the most formal, clinical, detached word she could come up with), and the pants were being returned on the third day of October. All the tags still on.

After asking for a driver's license (the official 90 day return limit had long been surpassed), the register was going to put the $44 back onto the card that was used.

“Which card was that on?”

I look back at the original receipt. A Visa, ending 0729.

“...Oh. That's my mother-in-law's Visa.”

Is that all right, or...

“I'd rather have a gift card, to tell you the truth.” We can do that.

Silence.

“She'd just give it back to me anyway. Save her the trouble.” I nod.

Silence.

Here you go. This gift card is good at Sears, Kmart, and Lands' End, in-store and online, no fees, no expiration dates, unless we go bankrupt again.

“Do I need to keep these receipts?”

Legally, we have to give them back to you, just for your records. But you can throw them out if you want.

She laughs. It sounds like a cry, but she is smiling, and... really, don't all laughs sound like crying anyway.

I want to say something. I want to help. I want to heal. I want to resurrect. I want to hug. But maybe this is just a time when I shouldn't be starting so many sentences with I.

She leaves, and I'm left with my thoughts. I look back at the loosely-folded pants. The tag has a picture of a young girl with flowers in her hair, with the caption “For The Future.” It's about Repreve™, the 100% recycled yarn used to make them.

A few minutes after she's left, the register tardily prints out coupons, meant for her. $15 off men's apparel, 10% off fine jewelry. I've always known these registers were sentient, but I didn't know they could be that cruel.

After a ten-minute-long hour, another customer comes to the counter. Her hair is white. She is returning a pair of her husband's pants because he wants a smaller size.

Life is short. But it's supposed to be longer.

Mario Chat / Frogs and Professors and Pigs
« on: February 18, 2014, 08:20:14 PM »
So I was reading this post on Back of the Cereal Box about obscure Mario characters, and when it got to this one my mind got blown a bit.

That little guy in Wario Land 4 in the pipe rooms that you throw to break blocks to get the diamonds? He's the guy from the newspaper at the beginning! I always saw his glasses and beard as a big metal helmet/robot head (made sense, considering how much you bounce on him and throw him and he never dies, though he does yell ouch) and his butt-shaped-head as like a feather in the helmet? and maybe he was holding a mirror? But no, it's that professor guy, holding a magnifying glass.

He looks a little bit like Mad Scienstein, the scientist/professor guy from Wario Land 3 (and also Dr. Mario 64, which was all WL3-themed for some reason), at least in the ingame sprite, but comparing the full art, they look different enough that they're probably not the same character.

Someone on a message board found a better idea: He's actually Dr. Arewo [dukar]ain, from Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, the Japan-only Game Boy game that Link's Awakening was built off of, which is translated as For the Frog(s) the Bell Tolls.

So unless there's like some deeper thing in Japan about professors/scientists have butt-shaped heads and little glasses and a big white beard and four teeth, like swirly glasses or tanukis, that looks like a pretty good match (Actually, I do seem to remember thinking the butt-head professor in the newspaper looked vaguely familiar when I first played WL4, but I'm pretty certain I had never heard of For Frogs the Bell Tolls back then... has he been in anything else? Or anyone that looked like him?).

So anyway, what I actually started writing this topic for: In Thousand-Year Door, there was that chapter For Pigs the Bell Tolls. So I'm figuring that's probably a reference to that frog game, right? WL4 wasn't the first time Nintendo acknowledged it -- Richard in Link's Awakening in the town with all the frogs is a character from there too, and also I think there was a sticker in Brawl that had the prince from the game. So I was wondering what the Japanese title of that chapter was, and noticed that our Japanese to English page for TTYD doesn't have chapter titles. Does anyone know?

Also I want to try out that frog game now.

Mario Chat / Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
« on: February 15, 2013, 04:47:17 PM »
Let's talk.

I really like that these guys are Beanish Hoohooligan...

...and these guys are a new enemy. Looking less Sticker Starish.

The graphical style is really interesting. Honestly, I still prefer the pre-PiT look, but this definitely does a good job of continuing on from BIS's style.
