The Atari 2600 has seen ports of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and the original arcade Mario Bros., but that wasn't enough for Sprybug over on the Atari Age forums.  He's busy putting together a version of Super Mario Bros. for the 2600, complete with background music and boss battles!  Sprybug has released a demo of a limited version of world 1-1, and he's working on boss battles against the nefarious Bowser Jr..  Take a look at the demo footage and see what's possible on the 2600.

Really makes you realize how big of a step forward the NES was. The flagpole made me grin.

I actually kinda like the way the Mario theme sounds on an Atari soundchip. Not sure about his decision to make Mario look like his Mario 3 sprites though.

Red and black/yellow and orange is easier to see on a black background than red and brown/red and white (well,SMB Firey colors would have still been ok..)

Often I wonder why they went with brown in SMB1 instead of blue or black as in Donkey Kong/SMB2 and 3.

The primary background color for SMB was blue.

It was purple. Dark blue was used for water levels, light blue for.. nothing..

I was talking to Chef: using the same, or similar, blue from SMB2 Mario's sprite in place of the brown in SMB1 Mario's wouldn't have clashed with the background color.

BUT... Maybe it just would've looked weird. Here's the palette NES games have to work with:

The more I think of it the more I think one of those deep blues or black in place of the brown actually wouldn't have looked so right in SMB1

If he wore black his arms would disappear in the underground and castle levels.

The sprites are suprisingly well made. It reminds me of the 2600 Mega Man game at I Am 8-Bit.
