The Wii's been out for over three years and yet it still only has a single Mario Party game. With its motion controller and casual audience, it's arguably the best system for Mario Parties to be held on, but there still isn't even an announcement of another release.
I, for one, could go for some more partying. How about you?
-
Not unless they go with my suggestion to include all minigames in previous titles (including remakes since, you know, some of us prefer Mario Bandstand or Bumper Balls from the original). Maybe include previous game boards too. And maybe allow minigames from only certain games. Basically, a Mario Party lives and dies by its minigames and I want it to return to the good 'ol days, but without any of the rotate-the-Control-Stick-until-your-thumb-bleeds games from the original.
-
"No" is all I can say.
-
NSMBW is to Mario Party as Pixar is to Disney. It's the new awesome replacement for the old one after the old one started sucking that gets back to the roots of why the old one used to be good back when it was.
-
Seeing how far the MP series has fallen from its former place of greatness, wanting Mario Party 9 would be like asking for Troll 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqp9eXgXYHU).
So, no.
-
I have only played Old New Super Mario Bros, and my latest Mario Party is 3, but it's my understanding that NSMBW and Mario Party are entirely different games.
I like Mario Party. Please, sir, may I have another?

When I saw "MP," I thought at first you were referring to Metroid Prime, for which the statement might also hold some water.
-
Well, when I saw "MP," I thought at first you were referring to Monkey Planet, for which the statement most certainly holds water.
-
Motion control = evil. I personally think 5 was the best of the series, and it's a downward slope either direction from there.
-
Metroid Prime never fell from greatness and I don't think Mario Party did either; you just got sick of it. Some of the boards in 8, particularly the real estate investment town, were quite clever.
And it brought us this game:

MP6 was good, and had good use of the Mic. MP7 would've been ok had it not been for Toadsworth making the slightest little noise at every menu selection. It almost sounded like you were poking the poor man with a stick (Hoo! Hew-Hoo! *gasp!* *ahem*)
I agree that MP5 was the top of the series though. MP9 should be a "Best of.." collection, with past boards, minigames, playable characters, and features all updated to fit Wii. Or MP10, perhaps.
-
Whoa. Am I the only one that disliked MP5? Frankly, MP6 was my favorite of the Cube ones.
-
MP1 and 4 were the best.
-
I take it back. The series peaked at 5, but 6 was just as good, and 7 was all right. However, 8 was just horrible, and for a number of reasons: motion control, no multiplayer decathlon, far too many pointless extras, being forced to do the same thing twice to unlock all of the characters, etc., etc. Heck, all of the Wii installments to Mario series seem to be lacking in multiplayer in the best modes (GP in Mario Kart, for one).
-
Mario Party has run its course.
-
A game is horrible for motion control?
Look at Mario Galaxy! It has motion control! RUINED FOREVER >:(!!!....?
-
Personally, I think that game would have been just as fine with standard control as well, and NSMBWii as well. (Plus, it's cursed me with the muscle memory aspect; every time I jump a bit short in NSMBDS or such, I shake the DS expecting to get a bit more distance. Grrrr...)
-
A similar thing happened to my boyfriend a couple of years back. He had played Super Mario Paper a lot and I let him borrow NSMB for a while. As soon as he jumped on the first Goomba he shook the DS so he would get more points. XD
-
Mario Party 8 had great visuals. I don't know why everyone is like, "hurr early gaemcoob grafix AT BEST". It was a beautiful game (the mini-games, especially). I liked the depth of field going on... you know, how it'd blur everything in the distance upon a close-up of a character on the board; however, it was a kind of ugly blur, if I remember correctly. The only horribly disappointing thing was those ugly 4:3 pillarboxes. When I rented it I desperately looked for an option to get rid of those stupid things, but of course, no such option exists. Sad...
As for best Mario Party games, I'd say 1, 2, 3, and 4. 1-3 had awesome mini-games and 4 was just like, "holy crap, gamecube mario party? they're steppin' it up with the graphics and mini-games here." I didn't even mind that the board was floating above the terrain. It gave it a good feel that way. (I also love the updated die roulette sound from the previous Mario party games and the fact that the camera angle was set lower so you could see most of the map instead of Mario Party 3's almost helicopter-filming-a-high-speed-chase aerial view).
1-4 were great, 5 introduced the fall of items in favor of those stupid 50 cent gumball machine plastic orb "items", 6 was decent (the microphone was more of a poorly-executed gimmick than current Wii shovelware), I don't remember playing 7, and I just couldn't stand the pillarboxes in 8. It really killed the immersion; it felt like I was playing the game while looking through a wooden fence.
With Nintendo being so lazy and recycling everything these days, I'm actually extremely surprised they haven't revisited the older mini-games/boards from times past. If they were ever to do that, I figure they'd compile the crappiest boards and mini-games from the newer games and probably re-badge the majority of Mario Party 8 calling it: "Mario Party 9: Mario Party 8 MotionPlus New Play Control!"
What they should do is update all the old games and have it be a "Mario Party All-Stars" kind of thing including Mario Party 1-4 all updated graphically, etc.
-
Personally, I liked the Orbs/Capsules/etc., and I think the only major problem with MP5 was the sheer amount of random minigames (including 2 battle minigames, for crying out loud). The minigame modes introduced in and unique to that game (specifically Tile Wars and Decathlon) were utter genius. Conversely, MP4's minigames were top-notch (Trace Race FTW), but I didn't care much for the majority of the rest of the gameplay aspects.
-
I do have to say that even though I generally don't like MP5, it does offer a few things that I actually really enjoy. Card Party, for instance, as well as the aforementioned Decathlon.
I also prefer MP6 & 7's Orbs over MP5's Capsules. God help you if every space on the board has a capsule on it during the last five turns...
-
Which one has the tank death battles, or whatever? Is it 5? Yeah, that one's great, then.
-
It's saying something that the "Super Duel Mode" was more enjoyable than the main game itself.
-
MP5, Super Duel Mode. Lakitu's Cloud for the body is extremely underrated, btw.

Oh yes, I remember those times. Beats having 5 stars on the map, though... I think. Still have no idea why they cheapened out on the Decathlon in MP8, even after MP7 had (what I consider) the best one yet.
And Lakitu's Cloud + E. Gadd (other parts) + Mr. I laser = WIN.
-
Just for the record, how many Mario Party-bashers here primarily play them single-player?
After reading all this talk about the various "modes", I'm starting to form a theory where all the MP hate comes from.
-
Well, I often play through whatever the single player mode is before diving into the multiplayer things, unless I happen to have a group of friends with me at the time. It was easier to have a bunch of people over and play back before we all got married, had kids, went to college.. you know, real life stuff.
It's not always easy bein' green getting a bunch of people together to play Mario Party. Usually, if we're all together playing games, it's some form of Mario Kart or SSB (or here lately, my wife playing some form of Final Fantasy while our friends help..)
-
When I get on a Mario Party kick (which is nearly always for #5 or 6), I start a new file, playing single player and multiplayer modes simultaneously. Or my siblings and I just do a Decathlon (so close to 7000 I can taste it). Perhaps I'm wrong, and I only like MP5 for the nostalgia factor, as it was the first multiplayer game (unless you count the Mario Bros. mode in SMA4) that I owned.

It wasn't even time for Mario Part 4.
-
One word: No.
-
Yeah. The Wii's been out for over over 3 years and only has ONE Mario Party! HEY NINTENDO! MAKE A NEW MARIO PARTY!
-
Maybe just one more, but I don't think the Wii should have more than two or three Mario Parties
-
I would like another Mario party...it should be a REALLY big one! :D
-
My opinion on the one's I've played...
MP2: It's alright for the first sequel. It had really good minigames IMO.
MP4: THe presentation was overall nice I have to say, and the mingames were good but my opinion is biased to the fact that this was my first GCN game a long time ago so of course I'm going to like it...
MP5: I don't hate it, but at least they tried to innovate...even though they failed. It also has this weird vibe to it.
MP6: I don't really remember besides the day/night thing and the microphone thing which seemed cool at the time.
MP7: I haven't spend too much time with this either before my disc cracked. But unlockable characters and stuff was cool. I didn't like the new ways of getting stars though...
MPDS: Not bad for it being on the DS and still being better then some of the console versions.
Honestly, they should just make a huge Mario Party game with a huge story/scenario and basically do what Brawl did (or Melee, actually) to the SSB series.
-
I will always give Mario Party DS huge props for being basically the only DS game that actually lived up to the promise of what single-card multiplayer was touted as. You play full, real, 4-player Parties with a single-card. If it used the standards of any other DS game, you would have 2-player only on a single board with 15 of the minigames available.
-
If it used the standards of any other DS game that isn't Clubhouse Games, a Puyo Puyo game, or a Bomberman game, you mean?

I didn't know that, that's actually pretty sweet. Maybe I should buy it sometime...

Any love for Mario Party-e by some crazy chance? lol
*owns and occasionally plays Mario Party-e*
-
Those e-games are pretty fun. Mario Party Advance was fun too.
-
Unless it was a compilation game (featuring boards/Mini Games from the first 8 console titles), I'd have to say no, I'm afraid.

You know, people complain about Mario Parties all being the same thing, then they literally ask for one that's copypasta'd from past releases. I'll never understand it.
-
I'd prefer to picture it as a "greatest hits" compilation of sorts. If Nintendo's ever going to wrap up the series, it had might as well go out with a bang rather than wallow in mediocrity, amirite?
-
I'm with Jim. You nostalgists don't know what's what. Good new stuff is better than good old stuff. 1-3 need to hit VC, then all 1-8 will be playable via Wii. Then we need a widescreen 9 (all new material).
-
Lizard Dude and Captain Jim just ate you for dinner. Jim paid the check.
-
Not really. The latter half of the series sucks, and shows very few signs of improving.
In my opinion.
-
I wouldn't complain if the series changed developers. Between the stellar 4-player modes in Mega Party Games! and the constantly innovating microgames themselves, an SPD-1 developed Mario Party would be godtasticly kittenrifficgasm.
-
I haven't played anything beyond the N64 games, but I'm thinking about picking up Mario Party DS soon. I would like to try Mario Party on the Wii sometime as well...maybe I'll rent it.
-
Ah, how I long for the days when Mario Party was new and innovative. Now it's just a series of drek, drek, and more drek. If you're going to make anymore sequels, at most stop at Mario Party 10, then cease.
(Speaking of ten... this post marks the first time in ten years that I've last posted, Eldstar help me.)
-
Welcome back, then.
Jman: If you're considering it at all, yes, do rent it. That's what I did and I saved myself quite a lot of misery. The stupid pillarboxes, however, make it basically the same as playing a game or watching a movie on a TV that had a magnet put right next to the screen (read: it's horrifying).

That makes TWO of us with a copy.
-
Three, actually. :)

Do you only pop in here to pat LD on the back whenever he makes a good post or something?
Seriously though, what's the hold-up on the 10th game? I'm glad it finally stopped following the Madden formula of releasing a new version every year, but has 9 really been selling that steadily that Nintendo and Hudson won't even bother with a follow-up? I don't see it on monthly sales charts like I've seen Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros so it can't really be that successful.
-
Did MPDS come out in one of those off-years?
-

The reason you don't see MP9 on sales charts and whatnot is because it hasn't been released yet. MP8 was the last numbered Party to be released (the most recent Party was MPDS, wasn't it?)
-
Shows how long its been since I played a Mario Party game.
But yeah, a new one that uses all those attachment gimmicks would rock. At the very least, MotionPlus support so we get some use out of it.
-

I wholeheartedly disagree with your sentiments, kind sir. I would much rather a compilation title which relies on classic minigames of the highest calibre rather than more recent-gen gimmickry.
-
Hold up. Motion Plus is supposed to be great, so why not use something that makes things actually more accurate (i.e., it)? It might make it actually worth playing this time or something.
-
I can't even remember why I made that stupid decision to pawn my Mario Party 1!
-
Because you're Tv_Themes. That's why.

To spare yourself the palm blisters?
-
I remember when my cousin Nick won the Tug of War. It was the Crowning Moment of Awesome for him! Thank goodness he had a spoonful of sugar.
-
Well I pretty much say this coming considering the fact that they made one every year for a while so they would take a break for a while at some point...just not for this long.
But last I checked (which was a while ago btw) Mario Party 8 was still doing decent so it's not necessary for Nintendo to go on to 9 just yet.
-
Mario Party 7 and 8 was lame. Don't know if I want a Mario Party 9. But then again, there was a few years for Nintendo and Hudson to improve the series.
-
Wii Party (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/07/wii-party-revealed-by-nintendo-iwata/).
-
Mario Party, minus the personality? Sounds like a blast!
-
That doesn't seem similar to Mario Party at all. It's much closer to Wii Play.
-
Yeah, but I mean, it's kinda ripping off the Mario Party style... such as blue and red (good & bad) spaces, green ! spaces, etc.
I'm sure as it progresses along it'll both delineate and stray from the Mario Party concept in several ways.
-
I'll keep my eye on this one...could be interesting. I'm sure I'll be digging out Mario Party 2 and 3 this summer. I introduced my younger cousins to them last summer and they liked them.
