List possible futures for the Mario series.
I'll start: Mario becomes a zombie.

Ah, this is obviously some strange usage of the word possible that I wasn't previously aware of, but I'll play along.  Mario becomes a zombie shooter.

True, true. However, a new direction may help postpone the end of Mario's "rule" of video games. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Mario, but something else will rule someday. One horrid day.

The Chef likes to argue.  You could probably flip your argument and he'd still argue against you.  I might say he's a devil's advocate, but I don't think he advocates for anything.

If this thread had been in Forum Games I think you would have got a lot more creative responses.  I'll treat it as if it were and show how I envisioned the thread going:

  • Mario becomes a zombie.
  • Mario becomes a zombie shooter.
  • Mario becomes a first-person shooter.  (See signature below.)
  • Mario uses paintballs.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o51ae4VoOZw
  • Mario becomes a first-person zombie shooter using paintballs that cure the zombies in a new RPG from Nintendo.

I don't seriously think this will happen, but I can imagine Bowser turning most of TMK into zombies.  Mario gets the cure, but can't get close to the zombies or they will turn him into a zombie so he uses paintballs to cure them.  It takes three body shots or one headshot (instant cure) for generic zombies.  Bosses take more shots or shots to specific areas.  Along the way Mario has to collect paintballs, air, etc, and help specific cure zombies.  Bowser is the final boss.  Mario defeats Bowser, but in the battle loses his paintball Fluud (or other non-gun name) and cures Peach with a kiss.

Yes, and I'd actually like a sequel to that. But it's not a main Mario game, it's a single spin-off from 1993. Therefore it doesn't reflect the future of the series, and they likely won't make it.

Moved.

Mario becomes a plumber.

I know he is generally referred to as a plumber, but Nintendo wants to steer away from that moniker.  Regardless, this is in forum games now so I'll consider it a possible future.

Hello:), can you elaborate on your Zombie idea or do you have something new to add?

That's an interesting idea.  I was thinking he'd get bit by a zombie, but a mushroom would be more Marioesque.

Also, I change the title to include Mario since this is now in forum games.  This should reduce the number of flying car and jetpack posts unless Mario is using them.

1-Down?

Which also opens up the possibility of 1-Left and 1-Right Mushrooms.
If Mario gets a 1-Up after having a 1-Down does he get an extra life and/or turn to normal Mario?  That is, would a 1-Up Mushroom cure a zombie?

The 1-Left and 1-Right Mushrooms could have a temporary effect similar to the left or right d-pad being stuck down.  Taking it a step further, a 1-Left-Up Mushroom could have the effect of the left d-pad being stuck up or unpressable for a short amount of time.

Do people doing speed runs hold down the right d-pad the whole time or do they use tape, glue, solder, etc?

Sure
Mario goes to Hyrule
He goes into a time portal, goes back in time, and figures out that Bowser and Ganon are working together.
It follows the Pokemon route, but instead of minor changes, one has a Mario style, and the other has a Zelda style.

I believe he means that there will be two versions of the game like the way there are with most Pokemon games.  In version of the game the graphics will look like a Mario style and the other will look like a Zelda style.  I'm imagining Superstar Saga and A Link to the Past.

One of the first-gen Wii U title  is a Western-outsourced spin-off of Super Mario Bros. A M-rated hack-n-slash starring the antagonistic Bowser, the lead designer describe it as a "darker, violent, badbutt action game that is the antithesis of the Mario games. Something that older, action-game-loving people could enjoy." and justify the jarring tone shift with "I think it's important to give Bowser a total badbutt edge to be a potentially M-Rated game.". The game flops miserably, leading Nintendo to cancel an unannounced localisation of Mother 3 for the 3DS e-shop in order to recoup costs.
