Post by: Dark_Shark on August 03, 2006, 05:32:31 PM
His design is based off the japanese creature known as the kappa right?I'm remeber Robert(The Chef) telling me this.

Well we need A picture of a Kappa, I think there's one in TMK....

He is not based off a kappa.

Yeah, he isn't based on a kappa.

Yeah, Kappa's have some bowls of water on thre head, right? Well Bowser doesn't have a bowl of water on his head, unless he hides it 0_o.....

But I saw a picture of a kappa and it looked just like Bowser. Look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_%28mythology%29 It even says thar Bowser is based on it.

Well the person who added that information is obviously incorrect.

Yup, even me :D
Anyway, Bowser is the King of Koopas, so he may be loosely based on one.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

He's NOT. It's been said in three posts already, he's NOT based on a Kappa.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Wii on August 04, 2006, 12:34:11 PM
He may not be based on one, but the two are quite strongly connected. For example, the Kappa has a thing that looks similar to a shell (or is a shell, until now i'd never heard of such a thing) on it's back, and the name's are almost identical.

I'll give you that. Still, Miyamoto never said he was based on a kappa, so it is bad to make an assumption unless the creator says it's true.

This means nothing.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Wii on August 04, 2006, 12:38:53 PM
It means nothing? So are you saying that Wario having his name has nothing to do with the fact that he's based on Mario, and the same for Waluigi and Luigi?
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Deezer on August 04, 2006, 12:45:57 PM
In an interview with Famitsu (http://www.famitsu.com/game/extra/special/2000/zelda/zelda04.html), Miyamoto revealed that they were considering naming Bowser either Kuppa, Yukke (Yukka), or Bibinba (Bi Bim Bap), all Korean dishes.

Right...
"We need a name for this new character. He's the king of koopas, breathes fire, has a spiked shell on his back and is massive."
"I know! Let's name him after a Korean dish!"
Them guys must have had fun ;)

It means nothing? So are you saying that Wario having his name has nothing to do with the fact that he's based on Mario, and the same for Waluigi and Luigi?

Uh, it's been officially stated that Wario and Waluigi's names are based on Mario and Luigi's. It's never been stated that Bowser is based on the Kappa.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Wii on August 05, 2006, 01:45:11 AM
Which would explain this debate, TheChef. If they had said that koopas were based on kappas, or said that they weren't, there wouldn't be this debate.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: The Chef on August 05, 2006, 09:15:25 AM
The debate shouldn't happen anyway because it's never been stated that Koopas are based on Kappas. So why are you debating about whether or not that's true, if it isn't?
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Wii on August 05, 2006, 12:29:53 PM
The thing is though, no has said that they aren't based on Kappas, so there's no proof that they aren't Also, how can anyone dismiss the similarities between the two?
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

Well the Kappa was thin and bowser is like a freaking house!

Bowser doesn't look all that much like a kappa.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

Yeah. The only real similarites are the hair on the head and the shell on the back. The koopa Troopas look more like kappas.

Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Vidgmchtr on August 06, 2006, 05:02:24 PM
Pretty much every character with a shell has a variation of "Noko" in their name in Japan.

No one said Bowser isn't based on a hamster, a tree, or Michael Jackson. Do you think he is based on any of those?
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

Does he look like any of those? Are the names of any of those similar to kappa?
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

Rob.You silly fool.Bowser is a turlte.Just read the story in the Super Mario Bros instruction manual.

Yeah, I kinda already knew that. But 'Koopa' has nothing to do with turtles. It means "soup-rice". That means NokoNoko doesn't nesseccarily have to do with turtles either. Any references to turtles in the Japanese games are usually associsated with the word "Kame" which actually means 'turtle'.

Does he look like any of those? Are the names of any of those similar to kappa?

No. But even though he and his name are similar to a Kappa, it's already been stated that he isn't based on one.

Not by Ninetdno it hasn't. or so I believe. Is there a link to a site where it has been said?
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

Is there a link to a credible site where it says he was?
Game-related articles on Wikipedia are terribly error-and-speculation-ridden. I don't consider those articles to be credible.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: The Chef on August 07, 2006, 03:39:59 PM
CW is right about that. we need an official statement. Until there is one, it's safe to say that Bowser isn't based on a Kappa.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: BP on August 07, 2006, 07:06:12 PM
Bowser: Giant, spike-studded, horned, hairy, evil, fire-breathing turtle who can come back to life indefinitely, even after falling in lava.
Kappa: Mythical, decidedly small salamander with a bowl of water on its head, which when empty will cause it to die.
I SEE NO SIMILARITIES. THE NAME "KOOPA" IS A PLAY ON "KAPPA," BUT BOWSER IS NOT ONE.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Deezer on August 07, 2006, 07:53:31 PM
THE NAME "KOOPA" IS A PLAY ON "KAPPA,"
The name "Koopa" comes from the pronunciation of Bowser's Japanese name "Kuppa", which is a Korean dish.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

I SEE NO SIMILARITIES. THE NAME "KOOPA" IS A PLAY ON "KAPPA," BUT BOWSER IS NOT ONE.
Right... that kappa has red ad yellow on it's head, just like bowser. It has a shell like thing on it's bback. The shell is the same colour as bowser'. The skin is the same colour as bowser'. In fact, if that kappa picture stood on it's back legs, put on a bit of weight and had spikes on it's shell, it would only be facial features that would be different.
No one said Bowser was a kappa either, just that he was based on one. Since no one from Nintendo has said either way we must look at the evidnce we have. He resembles a kappa. Koopa must have been selected for a different reason other than "soup rice", because even Nintendo isn't that mad. So, Koopas look like kappas, their names are similar to kappa, the only difference is is that koopas do not have a bowl of water on their heads, but Bowser does have that weird orange hair, simillar to the colour of a kappa's head.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

That's sort of what I was getting at at the beginning of the topic, but if that was all true then Miyamoto would've said something about it.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Wii on August 08, 2006, 09:57:47 AM
Miyamoto would've said something about it.
I doubt it. Nintendo wouldn't want people to know that they got the idea from a myth, probably.

All Miyamoto said is that his name comes from a Korean dish, NOT a play on "Kappa".

Oh, good. I'm used to being wrong, but this is a good wrong. Anyway, Notice that Kappas need water in that bowl to survive, and Bowser hates water. You know how angry he was after Chapter Four (I'm pretty sure it's four) when he made it back to Rogueport?
So, simply put... quit being stubborn, Bowser is in no way Kappa-related.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................

ok... nobody listens to those guys in wikipedia, so don't worry :p. Right. Look at the evidence again.
Bowser looks like a kappa.
Though his name is from a korean dish, it sounds like kappa. Don't you think that there's a slim chance that just perhaps koopa was picked for a reason other than it sounded like food?
There is no evidence against him being based on a kappa.

So, as we can see from this, until Nintendo says otherwise it is safe to assume that koopas ARE based on kappas, especially Bowser

No, plain out, no.  He is supposed to be a large, spiked, fire-breathing, TURTLE.  Or more likely a tortoise, since he's not a fan of water.  NOT a Kappa.  It's more likely the name of Koopa came after they designed him, so the idea that the similarity between the two names doesn't work.
Title: Re: About Bowser..................
Post by: Deezer on August 08, 2006, 02:46:30 PM
Guys, Jason Giambi (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5386) is a Goomba.

Let's look at the evidence.
Though his name sounds Italian, the names Giambi and Goomba are the same length and only three letters off!
Jason Giambi and the Goombas from the SMB movie are both big dudes.
Look at that smile! And those teeth!
No one from the Yankees organization nor the Giambi family have officially stated that he is not a Goomba.

So until the Yankees say otherwise, we can all assume that Jason Giambi is a Goomba.

ok, as far as I can see, apart from Bowser breathes fire, has a spiky shell, is fat, stands on two legs and doesn't like water, I see no more differences.
Also, He is supposed to be a large, spiked, fire-breathing, KOOPA. Koopa was decided before they designed Bowser or, if not that, at the same time.
And are any of you seriously believing that they only picked koopa because it's food? The Japanese have a sense of humour you know...

In Japan, the true source, there is only one Kuppa. The Koopa Troopas are actually called Nokonoko.

Bowser hates water. Kappa love water.

There has never been a reference to bowl heads in any Mario game.

None of the SMB team has mentioned this, when they have mentioned the inspirations for many other things.

Actually, as i've said before, look at the piture of the kappa (link to it on page 1).

Bowser is not based off a Kappa. The end. Sure, there may be similarities, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. There are similarities between dogs and humans, but that doesn't mean we're "based" on the other.

Okay, typed, whatever...

Also, I figure you should calm down before you get yourself in even deeper.  But I'm not a mod, so that's all I will say on that.

As far as the topic, you can't say that they are wrong, they are going on what the majority of people think Bowser is.  It is the most likely idea that he ISN'T based on a kappa.  Granted there is nothing directly from Nintendo saying he isn't based on a kappa, but in the same boat, little that he is, other than some speculation from a small fragment of people.  You want people to automatically accept your idea, but barely back it up with any kind of serious facts.

And serious facts? Serious fact 1... he looks like one! Do you need anymore, because there are no more either way. There is no evidence against him being a kappa, but there is for him being based on a kappa. I don't think he is, just anyone who says he definetly isn't is just stupid.

Wii, I totally agree with the kappa idea! I also believe that George W. Bush will speak a coherent sentence.</sarcasm>

ok, for any idiots out there, mainly you, FireL, I shall say it again.
I DON'T THINK BOWSER IS BASED ON A KAPPA! DID I EVER SAY HE WAS? NO! ALL I SAID WAS THERE ARE SIMILARITIES!
Ok, i've made the offer once, i'll make it twice. Find one of my posts, just one, that says bowser WAS based on a kappa, and i'll shut up. You can't, so GET A LIFE FOR GOD'S SAKE!

OMG, i've only been using the name as an extra, the rest is plain obvious!
Ok, shell thing
Want more?

Actually, as i've said before, look at the piture of the kappa (link to it on page 1).
Now, if that were fatter and walked on two legs, all you'd need to do is give it spikes on its shell and the only difference would be the facial features.

1-You need to be desperate when there people who only look at your last post
2-hmm. I suppose it does seem like i'm saying that Bowser is a kappa, I give you that, but i'm actually just showing the similarities.

I've only been saying the name as an extra, there are many other similarities

Hmm... surely even YOU can understand that?

Sighhhh... this topic just isn't worth my time. I feel like I'm arguing with a wall, trying to convince it that it is, in fact, a wall. Stupid wall.

All the other walls know that they're walls.  It's always the forth wall.  lets break the forth wall.

Anyone who thinks Bowser is based on a kappa needs to play some more Mario Games.

2.You could get banned

There is no fourth wall in real life. In fact, there aren't any walls at all.

...crap, now I have nothing to break.

Get banned for saying Bowser is based on a kappa? Anyway, you're a little late since everyone who has been saying that left ages ago.
