Title: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV
Post by: Lizard Dude on April 03, 2010, 01:58:31 AM
Seriously why?

It's fifteen dollars on-line. It's beautiful. It's fun. It's touching. It's got twenty collectible trinkets. It has excellent music start to finish. It has no waggle. It has a button dedicated to reversing your personal gravity. It could be the platformer you've all been whining for, and yet

none of you have it.

The second-best game of 2010. Second to Bayonetta.

Go buy it.

It's actually slightly cheaper right now if you buy it from the right place (http://www.getgamesgo.com/catalogue/game/vvvvvv).

Which I plan to do so I can see for myself why this game is so good.

VVVVVV, second-best game of 2010, has now hit the electronic digital Steam videogame store for $5. I paid $15! Oh well, it's worth $50.

Man, all my money this week is already spent on other stuff. I guess I'll have to miss the 10% off bit and buy it for $5 next week.

Hmm.  For some reason I have two copies of Steam on this machine.  Guess my wife and I both installed it.  For me it was because of Portal.  For my with it was The Sims 3.  Now I'm re-downloading Portal and getting VVVVVV.  Wow, it's only $4.49!  That's another 10% saved.  Now I have $15.51 left to spend.  Should I put it all on VVVVVV or get something else?  Any suggestions?

Hmm, have you played Plants vs. Zombies?

Yep.  Got it on Steam now.

Here's some I considering:

KrissX
$4.99

Eversion
$9.99

Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Persian Carpet
$9.99

Professor FizzWhizzle
$6.99

Ziro
$9.99

Puzzle Agent
$6.69

Puzzle Dimension
$4.49

I haven't used Steam or PC gaming a long time so feel free to suggest/resuggest anything I might have missed/forgotten.  Thanks.

If you do have Peggle, might I suggest Obulis (http://store.steampowered.com/app/11330/) or Chains (http://store.steampowered.com/app/11360/)? I also hear Chime (http://store.steampowered.com/app/62100/) is good.

I have it for DS and really enjoyed it for a long time, but am in the mood for something different, but similarly addictive.

Ok, I just found Veni Vidi Vici. Definitely the hardest rooms, but also very fun. Plus the name of one of the rooms beforehand gave me a really good laugh. Such a sick game.

Alright, I bought it. Good stuff so far... is it at all odd for me to call it a combination of Portal and Cave Story?
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV

I've never played Cave Story but it's not really Portal at all.

Alright, 727 deaths later, I beat the game. However, especially with how much Veni Vidi Vici put me over its knee, I'm far from getting all the trinkets.

<+Illyasviel> You should play VVVVVV.
<+Turtle> The fact that Lizard Dude is so in love with this game means I would find it decent to good at best.
<+Illyasviel> It's a five-dollar platformer that runs on my netbook and has a soundtrack so good I paid money for it. It's also simultaneously one of the most forgiving games on the market and absolutely brutal.
<+Turtle> Next game I spend money on will probably be MAG, or else Re:coded.
<+Illyasviel> No. Spend $5 on VVVVVV. I guarantee it's a better game than at least Re:Coded.

Someone back me up here.
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV

Re:Coded is a Kingdom Hearts game. Point automatically goes to VVVVVV.

Post by: Turtlekid1 on October 28, 2010, 10:01:01 AM
Re:coded looks crazy fun.  Point goes back to Re:coded.

Ignoring KH, I could also get MAG for a similar price to VVVVVV, but it would also last a lot longer.  And there's still inFAMOUS 2, set to release later next year, to consider.
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV
Post by: bobman37 on October 28, 2010, 10:33:34 AM
Turtlekid1. Seriously. Buy VVVVVV. It's only five dollars. Five dollars.. That means packing a lunch just one time this week. Don't think too hard about it, just buy it. It'll be well worth it.
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV
Post by: bobman37 on October 28, 2010, 10:35:05 AM
The replay value alone should be enough to convince you. I've put in well over 50 hours and am only now just slowing down a little. And that's because I wanted to, not because it's a 50 hour game. It's a one hour game.

For me, that doesn't mean just packing a lunch once this week.  That means not being able to buy a game I want later next year.  Keep in mind that I get most of my games and all of my money from birthdays and Christmas.

inFAMOUS 2, Kingdom Hearts: Re:coded, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, Batman: Arkham City, the 3DS, pretty much every launch title for the 3DS, etc.

As you can see, I'm already having to prioritize.

I laughed that me liking the game counted as a strike against it.
For most of the people on this forum, it might not.  But I'd say it's clear that we have radically different taste and philosophy regarding games.  And regarding everything else, for that matter.
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV
Post by: WarpRattler on October 29, 2010, 09:10:18 AM
Alright, since Turtlekid was complaining about the "one hour" bit last night, let me emphasize how big a deal the replay value and quality of the game are in relation to bobman's gaming habits:

I felt bad about putting 27 hours into Red Dead Redemption.
I've put in well over 50 hours and am only now just slowing down a little. And that's because I wanted to, not because it's a 50 hour game.

I've not put in that much time myself, but I very easily could. I just played through it again yesterday, in fact.
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV
Post by: Lizard Dude on October 29, 2010, 01:03:25 PM
The 2D Metroids are "one hour games" but Turtlekid1 doesn't seem to have a problem with those. Anyway, I recommend stop arguing with him. He's not going to freakin' buy it. And if he ever does, we'll just have to listen to him bash it for the next couple years.
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV
Post by: Turtlekid1 on October 29, 2010, 01:40:43 PM
Metroid games are easily longer than one hour the first time playing through them.  And feature massive, relatively open, exploration-focused worlds that you can take multiple different paths through for a different experience every time.

You mean like inFAMOUS 2, Kingdom Hearts: Re:Coded, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, Batman: Arkham City, and half the 3DS launch titles?

Aside from the open-world structure, VVVVVV is nothing like Metroid games, or anything else you've played. You're just afraid to try new things.

Post by: Turtlekid1 on October 29, 2010, 07:38:32 PM
Five dollars is still five dollars that I don't have if I want the games that are priorities for me.  As it is, I'll probably only ever own two of those titles I listed.

And "lame"?  Really?  I don't accuse your games of being lame.  I didn't accuse VVVVVV of being lame, either.  Not once.  All I remember is saying that I really don't need another game to spend money on.

That's the same. By definition you can't "know" if a new thing is worth it. Well, maybe if there's an entire thread of people saying how awesome it is, but I digress...

There is a solution that could make everyone in this thread happy: Turtlekid1 getting a freakin' part-time job. How old are you?

The emphasis is different - on the money, not on the fact that it's new.  I'm sure the game is great.  It looks decent enough.  It's just not high up on my "To Play" list.

Hopefully most of the people who have bid in the four-digit range have been people who want the socks themselves.

But then, this is the Internet, where people are especially dumb when it comes to their money.

It's been a while since I've had such a love-hate relationship with a game. I'm currently on the part where you Escort Victoria and it is driving me nuts. But earlier I beat The Tower and was so thrilled.

Meh.

Let the flamestorm begin!
Well, after getting badgered about it so much, you have a right to think it's overrated.

No, he doesn't have a right to say "meh" and not give any justification beyond flamebait.

It's a reasonably fun game with neat gameplay and a catchy soundtrack that's ruined by horrendous graphics.  I know it's a stylistic choice, and I don't really care.  Doesn't make them any easier to look at.

And it's not the second-best game of the year by any stretch.  It's just a fun little platformer that I'll probably play through once, think "cool," and never touch again.

Beat it today. Most deaths was about 500 in The Final Challenge. I still am not a fan of the choice for graphic style (I feel that "man retro is so tight" has been run into the ground), but it's a good enough game that I will not deduct any points from it. I plan to play this again and eventually get all the trinkets...after I stop crying.

Looks like they didn't go through with the free digital copy of the game for the eBay bidders. That or they're taking way too long to process the deal.

Either way, I'm feeling disappointed.

A shame they sold so low.

Huh, I bid a bit over $300 so I don't believe I qualify for that deal.

A real shame they lost so much money from that promise though.

Go back and look at the names of the tracks in the game again.

With luck, they won't lose what made the soundtrack great along the way, as so many songs on OCRemix seem to.

Yes. He really had to go to the bathroom.

I think a better question is, why do all the song names start with "P"? It's a chicken/egg thing.

The answer to both is: because he made them like that.

With luck, they won't lose what made the soundtrack great along the way, as so many songs on OCRemix seem to.
This from the guy who said the soundtrack would benefit from orchestral arrangements.

Right - orchestral arrangements that pay homage to the soundtrack, not remix them to such an extent that the original track is unrecognizable.

Examples.
You have an abundance tracks like this (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00658/) or this (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01039/), which just plain don't do the original pieces justice, and tracks like this (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00098/) and this (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02123/), which have some good bits but contain a lot of tedious padding.  It's not a bad site, but combine the aforementioned categories with the crippling lack of diversity in the games they remix, and I'd say it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Well, if you don't like one ReMix, there's a couple thousand others, and it's not like they're all by the same people. Besides, that's the whole point--just listen to the original if it's so musically delicate.
Title: Re: Why don't any of you people have VVVVVV
Post by: Turtlekid1 on December 07, 2010, 12:23:44 PM
Except there usually aren't a couple thousand others, since apart from a few [sometimes undeserving] popular tracks and games, there are maybe two or three remixes for a given song, if you're lucky.  Heck, this also applies to how much attention the games themselves get.  Look at the list of most remixed albums for the PS1; Final Fantasy VII has a whopping eighty-seven remixes, with an insane drop off to Xenogears' thirty-six.

And sometimes the original has the raw notes down but the instruments aren't as good, usually because of the technical limitations of the system its source game was on.  The ending for Super Metroid, for instance - one of my favorite songs of all time, provided the instruments sound more authentic than what you'd find in a SNES game.

What I want to know is why they're so [darn] stubborn about that Super Metroid album being in any format other than the one nobody listens to.

I just wanted to link this nice retrospective (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/12/07/the-games-of-christmas-%e2%80%9910-day-7/) as a counterpoint to Turtlekid1's "meh".

Didn't really get the big deal behind VVVVVV, but after that article I'm more inclined to buy it now.

Might as well pick up Super Meat Boy while I'm at it. Along with Donkey Kong Country Returns, my breaks going to be filled with so much platforman.

VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy both look like glorified flash games.

There's nothing glorified about the way VVVVVV looks.

"Flash games" is not a genre, nor should it be used as a comment on "quality". Maybe if you're living in 1999, but get with the ****ing times. I've experienced more staggering works of gaming genius in Flash than your sheltered head-in-the-sand inexperienced gaming brain could ever conceive of existing.

Sorry for the double post, but I just installed Steam and VVVVVV on my Ubuntu machine, but there's no save.  Where does Steam put the saves?  I'm using Vista and want to share my Steam saves with my XP and Ubuntu computers.  Thanks in advance.

I believe VVVVVV's save data is stored in the executable itself. Otherwise there'd probably be Steam Cloud support and you wouldn't have to do anything like that.

Ah, neat! Well, I did get Bundle 1... and I think 2... but I've already got most of the games in 3. Besides, I've already got enough backlogged games on Steam that I'm either stuck on, hate, or have barely started. Good thing the update's supposed to be on there, too, though.
