There doesn't appear to be a thread here for this game, so I made one.
I am excited about the Koopalings appearing in this game! I am not excited about the babies once again returning, but as long as they keep the items balanced like they were in MK7, I will be ok with baby heroes/princesses (as long as they are the only babies appearing this round..)
-
Metal Dry Baby Wawaluigi will appear. I know it
-
I hate the so-called "item-balancing" they've implemented a lot more lately. I'd like to use something other than a banana peel when I'm in first place, y'know?
-
I am planning on getting this later this year when it comes out. I have not bought any of the MK games previously for a long time. The last MK game I played properly was Mk64.
-
I want to get it, but sadly don't have a Wii U yet.
-
I'm.... hesitant. 12-man GPs are back.
-
That's not a bad thing, necessarily. As long as the items stay relatively balanced, similarly to MK7. That's the most item balanced one I've played.. since MKSC, I think.
Now if they would just lose the Blooper..
-
How will the anti-gravity work? Will the camera rotate with the car, or not?
-
Yes.

New trailer.

I don't think I've ever been quite so hyped about a Mario Kart game. And it's not even that it's got much more going for it than other Mario Karts, these videos just make it look so fun. I know I'll be picking up a copy, and I'm sure my friends and I will have a grand old time with it.
-
I just can't get over how brilliant the graphics look, especially after giving Mario Kart Double Dash, DS and Wii so much guff for their subpar graphics over the years.
-
I'm probably preordering if I can. And hopefully I can get the collector's edition if it's not too expensive.
-
I'd like the digital version AND the blue shell from the limited edition, but I doubt that's possible.
I've said it before, but will say it again, "Digital downloads should offer a real world incentive or a price discount."
-
In my excitement for Mario Kart 8, I went out and (finally) bought Mario Kart 7.
... does anyone still play?
-
Will the person playing as Lakitu be forced to rescue other players who've fallen into hazards?
-
It's a little late for that joke, Lakitu was previously playable in Kart 7...
-
It's never too late for that joke, since Lakitu is playable again.
-
Out of curiosity, when Lakitu joins the race, who's in charge of that?
-
Probably a paratroopa.
-
Paratroopa: Just leave it to me!
-
Out of curiosity, when Lakitu joins the race, who's in charge of that?
Lakitu.
-
It's a little late for that joke, Lakitu was previously playable in Kart 7...
How can I save face?
-
I wouldn't worry about it.
-
Commit seppuku. It is a Japanese game, after all.

Oh my gosh! I recognize a couple of those tracks now..
The one with the underwater features and Yoshi with the Piranha Plant weapon looks like Donut Plains 3 (or whichever one was the opening track for Special Cup in SMK).
The highway track where Mario ramps up from what appears to be a ramped vehicle is screaming Toad's Turnpike at me, but it's probably not.
-
Is the Rainbow Road in this video the same as the MK64 Rainbow Road? It certainly looks (and sounds) that way.
-
Is the Rainbow Road in this video the same as the MK64 Rainbow Road? It certainly looks (and sounds) that way.
Apparently it is, but I think it'll be like MK7 where there will be that and a new one.
-
You mean like every MK since Super Circuit, since that was the first one to feature retro courses.
-
Wasn't 7 the first with a retro Rainbow Road? (excluding Super Circuit since it had all SNES courses)
-
I thought DS and Wii had one too.
-
Nope.
-
How.....pobble.
-
Here's the roster.

-
Wait...that can't be real.
-
I can't tell if this recent pushing of Rosalina is hinting at some large involvement in a new game Super Mario Galaxy 3, or if it means she's the new Daisy.
Probably the latter.
-
It's hard to get upset about the roster (especially in something where it's as inconsequential as Mario Kart) when everything else about the game looks fantastic, though I do admit the silly part of me is dissapointed this isn't the game to debut WarioWare characters :/.
-
What, dare I ask, is beneath Toadette?
-
Pink Gold Peach (not a shop).
-
Kill me.
-
I actually wouldn't care as much if they just called her "Metal Peach." Although, I bet it's just some sort of translation error and it's going to change before release.
It does, however, bother me that they chose a recolor retexture reflection demo over some other character, like one of the DK characters, ROB, or a recurring Mario boss. Of course, the game is in development and there's probably going to be a few secret characters, and I can just play as any of the 29 other characters. Even if you hate baby/metal of characters, there's still 23 characters left.
-
Seven more are excessive copies of the same boss concept that I seem to remember Nintendo consolidating into one nice neat package in 2002
-
Nintendo has six months to introduce Pink Gold Peach in a main-series game.
-
They have already kind of in SM3DW if you get the Lucky Bell.

yeah but he doesn't have green hair and glasses
-
...Which a total of one of them do.
-
exactly
-
God, the Direct is probably the best put together I've seen. I really liked the more creative path they took with this one, and hope they go in a more humorous direction with later Directs.
But man these character designs are silly... (http://www.p4rgaming.com/nintendo-top-character-designers-spent-three-years-creating-pink-gold-peach-for-mario-kart-8/) P4R is satire
-
I still refuse to believe this is all the characters. No Birdo, no Bowser Jr., no Diddy Kong (or Dixie or Cranky). But now I'm starting to think they'll be DLC, like in Mario Golf: World Tour. Say for $5.99 you can get a cup of four retro courses, some new kart parts, and Diddy Kong (and maybe actual arenas for battle mode?), or $19.99 to buy all four packs at once plus unlock Emerald Luigi, who is immune to Blue Shells but can't use any items himself.
That would kinda suck since they did explicitly confirm in the ND that it's $60. Mario Golf is only $30 (in America. In Europe, it's still full price for a 3DS game, which is noticeably more than USD$40 already), so getting the game with the season pass gets you a pretty huge number of holes for only $5 more than a regular 3DS game (if you're American), even if those extra holes are just the courses from Mario Golf 64 with new scenery.
-
I hate DLC.
Edit: But I guess I should be glad that it's the Koopalings, who are visually interesting, and they're not putting in stupid generic bosses like King Bob-Omb or whatever, especially if they were still bound to their own karts and couldn't use anyone else's

I hate DLC.
DLC can be good if it's done right. Take the Sonic Lost World DLC, for example. Two bonus levels based on Zelda and Yoshi's Island for free. Adding a few crossover/retro tracks would be amazing for free, or even a few dollars if it's something like a pack of every Rainbow Road or Mario Circuit.\\

The newest internet yamyam
I'm maining Luigi in MK8 because of this. Although, I had always planned on doing that anyway.
-
I do like DLC that's done right, I just dislike when it's exploited to get extra money right around release time. And I guess it really doesn't seem like the objective is to make people pay extra for a good roster--they just made weird decisons? So whatever, keep doing whatever it is you're doing, Nintendo, just don't announce the Krazy Kong Pals and WarioWare's Eccentric Employees downloadable character packs tomorrow, or else it might start looking kinda Capcom in here.
Lack of characters I'd rather play than Still Pretty Much Just Yoshi aside, I love MK8.
-
I'd like to think I have enough self control to not pay just for characters, but packs of retro courses with extra characters thrown in would be pretty okay.
-
I would pay $5.00 to be able to set the amount of laps in VS Race. We want 3-lap N64 Rainbow Road!
-
It might seem strange, but I'd pay to get out of the kart and walk around. Imagine climbing to the highest point or with antigrav boots, the lowest. What would happen if I could collect items? Could we play coop or competitive with walking players by throwing them items or throwing items at other racers?
-
Or you could have battles with other walking players on Rainbow Road, kind of like a 3D SSB, but with items only and no Fox.
-
Crossover! Own both Mario Kart 8 and SSB WIi U? MK3 characters can brawl in SSB and SSB characters can race in MK8! (Figurines can also be used to add players to both games.)
-
No h8, MK8 is str8 up gr8.
Although when it comes to music, I like the original versions of Toad's Turnpike and Rainbow Road 64 better...
-
You forgot the m8. Also unfortunately I have yet to own MK8. Woe is me.
-
Good things about Mario Kart 8:
- Item balance is now less bull[dukar]
- Very creative track design
- Gorgeous shiny HD graphixx
- Awesome music (sound effects are also great)
- Overall, freshest feeling Mario Kart game in a long time
Bad things about Mario Kart 8:
- Many retro courses lost what made them magical (Yeah, it's dumb that you can just drive around Peach's Castle in Royal Raceway...but it's fun! They shouldn't have closed it off. And Toad's Turnpike's redone music sounds all "modern", for lack of a better term, and Rainbow Road 64 looks too different...)
- Item balance is still somewhat bull[dukar]: 150cc is a nightmare thanks to what's become too common in newer, more chaotic Mario Kart installments: Get the lead, cruise along in 1st place, get hit by items, reclaim lead, get hit by item at the very end and finish in 5th place
There are some things that aren't perfect, but overall Mario Kart 8 mostly met and/or exceeded my expectations.
-
My biggest problem with Mario Kart 8 (which actually also replies to 7 as well) is the extra drum track that gets mixed in to the music when you have a sizable lead. It's just the same basic kick/cymbal pattern for every track, and while that works well with some music tracks (Electrodrome and Piranha Plant Slide come to mind) it really doesn't fit with others, like Sherbert Land or Moo Moo Meadows, with their rather minimal percussion.
That's actually my only major complaint. For the most part, this game has done nothing but impress.
-
As someone who has been a die-hard fan of Battle Mode from the SNES days, I must say that MK8 breaks my heart. Absolutely breaks it. They were clearly running out of time and put this battle mode in just because fans have come to expect a battle mode.
...But other than that, I've found this to be a pretty outstanding entry in the series. I like how twisty some of the new tracks get.
-
Just played several rounds with LD; he dominated. :/
Fun, nonetheless! I caught up a couple of times, which surprised me, because I (usually) suck.

This one is fake; it's shopped over a still from this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVkjQ8WAtsQ) from last E3. Exact same reflections on the TV and shadow of guy's face on wall.

That's MARIO Kart!
-
If the character-select one's fake, you gotta admire the amount of effort that went into it; it even says "Mario Kart DLC Pack" in the reflection on the top of the TV. The other one seemed pretty dang unlikely image aside (how on earth would Shine Runners work on full racetracks?) In any case, if those characters are for real, I'm not disappointed by the selection, though I would wonder if there's anything more to it.
-
I can't see anything wrong with the character select picture, but I can't get past the fact that, if it's real, whoever was holding the gamepad could have just tapped the D-pad one slot to the right and gotten a photo that would be undeniably real, instead of one that might just be a really well-done fake.
I saw someone saying it was fake because Birdo wasn't next to Yoshi. Because apparently Birdo and Yoshi's relationship is unambiguously canon now, and that must be reflected in the character roster by putting them next to each other, just like how Mario is next to Peach, Luigi is next to Peasley, and Waluigi is next to Toadette.
-
E. Gadd's head icon looks pretty fake to me.
-
Maybe something to do with the NFC figures?
-
I have a friend who has a Wii U. Since I've had a few MarioKart 64 tourneys in the past, he decided to invite me to a Mario Kart 8 tournament he had hosted this past weekend. I've played every version of Mario Kart except for the DS and 3DS games and, after a whole night, can come up with some legit pros and cons for it.
PROS
--The graphics. Considering I normally play Mario Kart on a 64, I think my "wow" factor was to be expected. Still, they look great.
--The music. I was a little disappointed in the Game Cube and Wii versions in terms of music (in general, some songs were good). Sure, it sounds a little bit like Wheel of Fortune music in the Wii U version, but it's still pretty good.
--The new item where it gives you one of everything is pretty neat.
--The fact you can use almost anything to control it is nice for those of us who have preferences. My buddy had practically every controller Nintendo has made in recent memory sitting out for us to choose from. Interestingly, nobody picked the wheels.
--Lots of kart customization options. It was honestly a little overwhelming at first!!
--Coins are back. It feels like SNES all over again.
CONS
--Maybe I'm going to be in the minority here, but there are way too many characters for my liking. 12 would have been more than adequate. Why do we really need a baby version of everyone, and how do these babies exist alongside their grown-up versions anyway? (I would have narrowed the roster down to Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Toad, Koopa Troopa, Bowser, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, and a Goomba--they really need to get one into a game sometime!)
--No fake item boxes!! Seriously, these were a classic item, even if N64 didn't have them.
--Not sure if maybe it's just me getting older, but it seems the computer got better on every lap. I'd be out in 1st or 2nd for the first lap or two, but then I'd always fall to 3rd/4th even with the computer on easy on the final lap.
--Only one SNES track. It's a good one though!!
-
and how do these babies exist alongside their grown-up versions anyway?
Easily. (http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/mlpit)
and a Goomba--they really need to get one into a game sometime!

When using the Pro or other controller in single player is it possible to turn off the Gamepad screen and have the map show up on the TV?
Also, is there away to remove split screen when two people are playing so that one can use the Gamepad screen and the other one use the TV screen?
-
I think no and no. I use a Classic Controller and want the minimap on the TV too, but haven't found any way to get it up there and the manual doesn't mention it
Ah well. I know who's behind me when I'm racing CPUs: everybody. And who's in front of me when I'm racing friends online: everybody

The lack of the map was a frustration for me unless I had the controller. I'm wondering if it's a subliminal ploy by Nintendo to get more people to use them rather than stick with the classic controllers in an attempt to move the gaming public forward.
Think about it--how many people do you know who play some Wii variant of MarioKart on a classic controller? I have a buddy who bought a bunch of knockoff Game Cube controllers for his Wii so he could have four people playing on them at one time. I actually don't know of anyone personally who LIKES the Wii Wheel. I own two of them and they mostly are dust magnets underneath my bed. The novelty wore off pretty quickly, but I think most of it is because we've all been used to using analog sticks on Mario Kart games since 64 came out.
Yes, most of my friends have been around since the 64 was new (this guy still remembers unboxing his 64). One thing I was pleasantly surprised with on the Wii U was the ability to use the D-pad--a definite throwback for us SNES vets!! (Raise your hand if you were gaming when the SNES Mario Kart was the ONLY Mario Kart!)
-
The Pro controller is more comfortable for me. The gamepad wouldn't be bad if it had customizable controls or I duct tape down the A button during races.
-
I know a person who apparently uses tilt controls in MK8, marked with the wheel controller appearing next to his name. Which I kind of take as the game being aware that almost nobody likes tilt controls, and is encouraging the user to brag about how they have a self-imposed handicap.
The rest of us just like to spam the "I'm using tilt controls!" message in the online lobby even though it is completely untrue.
-
In 7 I used tilt exclusively because it was fun. I may go back to tilt in 8 with my daughter, but otherwise I expect to be using Pro or GCN (when/if it is allowed).
-
I duct tape down the A button during races.
Does Y work any better? I know it's a lot more comfortable for me.
You can also use the right stick to accelerate. I haven't been able to get used to it yet, but it's a neat option.
-
I have a real serious issue with the baby characters now. So I was doing a GP as Roy, and apparently one of the predetermined thorns for his side is Baby Peach. She was tailing me as I narrowly avoided a piranha plant on the track, and it lunged down and bit her head off instead of mine. Her little yelp made me smile. Not too long after, she caught up and rammed into the shell I was dragging. She tumbled forward and wailed a shrill scream of terror. This made me laugh. The presence of all these babies in Mario Kart 8 is either making me a terrible person who enjoys the suffering of infants, or is revealing I was one all along.
-
When using the Pro or other controller in single player is it possible to turn off the Gamepad screen and have the map show up on the TV?
You can turn off the GamePad screen anytime by pressing the HOME Button, then go to Controller Settings, then Display Off.
It turns back on the moment you press a GamePad button so it's only useful when you're using a different controller.

Also the default option after a race is "Next Race" instead of "View Highlights."
(if you're worried that you'll hit A too fast and miss your chance to upload a clip of a really good race, just check the recent races in MKTV after you're done)
-
Unused cup icons found that hint at DLC (http://mkboards.com/forums/threads/unused-grand-prix-images-found-through-data-mining.8402/)
If you read a bit further in the thread, data for staff ghosts and unused textures were also found.
-
Actually, I saw some kind of website that had directory listings of the files on the disc, and "DLC" was actually in a couple filenames.
-
New Super Luigi U was a very good exemple of how great a DLC can be. I've played as much NSLU that I've played NSMBU!
So if Mario Kart 8 really has DLCs on the way, I would be more than happy to buy them!
In another hand, NSMB2 has very expensive and uninteresting DLCs.
-
Definitely looking forward to the upcoming DLC; the score information and on-TV map are sounding pretty nice, and not having to move the cursor to advance to the next race will be nice as well. Hopefully those unused cup icons / filenames mean that we will indeed be seeing some track DLC in the future; sixteen extra retro tracks would be pretty awesome.

I am excited about the DLC courses. More of those is what I would pay money for. Hope the Animal Crossing track(s?) call for some Totaka music.

Grade-A Miiverse post.
The new tracks will surely have music from their own series. The real question is whether it will be an old arrangement or will the MARIO KART BAND reconvene.

I've noticed that, since the patch and DLC, you're allowed to drive the wrong way.

What happened when you tried to before?

Lakitu would pick you up, turn you around, plop you on the road and take your coins. Yeah, even in Time Trials.
Peach's castle is gated off in Royal Raceway now but come on, everyone loves doing things the game tells you not to do.

How in the world have I not posted in this thread yet? I spent the better part of the summer plowing through MK8 with one of my best friends, and it is awesome. I think it's the best of the series so far.
