Super Mario Kart was released 20 years ago today, at least in Japan.  The game was released on August 27th, 1992 in Japan and at some point in September in the USA.  For the past 20 years, folks have been tossing bananas, hurling shells, and desperately trying to escape from blue shells of doom!  As a special bonus, WTMK has a special Mario Kart-themed playlist running right now.

What's your favorite Mario Kart game?
Let's do the Mario, all together now!

Mario Kart 64!  It was my first, and it was awesome.

I'd probably have to go with Double Dash!! too. Partly for nostalgia (my first 3D Mario Kart).

7 would be just about perfect if it didn't cramp up my hand so bad, though. If I could play 7 with a Gamecube controller (and have two people per kart), it'd definitely be my favorite.

It's a tie between 64 and Wii for me. Those are also the only 2 I've played.

Actually, I really enjoy Mario Kart DS. Double Dash probably has the best unique features, though.

My favorite is Mario Kart DS, but I haven't played Mario Kart 7 yet, and that one looks to be pretty awesome. So maybe that'll be my favorite eventually.

Diddy Kong Racing is the best kart racer, Mario Kart DS is the best Mario Kart (snaking forever!), special honors to 16-player Double Dash!!

Mario Kart DS is definitely my favorite, with 7 as a close second. I honestly never got the love for the 64 version, though, I always found it very boring compared to the rest. I'm not trying to start any arguments, I just would like to know why so many people like it so much (Big Donut is not an acceptable answer). Is it just because it was your first Mario Kart?
