Title: Annoying Topic Trends
Post by: Glorb on August 25, 2005, 06:41:10 AM
Don't get me wrong, I like forums and I like posting on them, but there are some things that really tick me off about most gaming forums:

1. Lack of originality in names. The first name that anyone ever gets in a firum is always "Dark-Something". It's either DarkMaster, DarkSonic, DarkMario, DarkYoshi, DarkMegaman, or something like that. After the wave of "Dark-Something" names comes videogame/anime character crossover names like "SonicMario", "MarioMegaman", "SailorMoonKnuckles" or "DarkInuyashaSonicMarioBowserMegaman". There are always some original names, but those account for about 3% of the names population. And don't even get me started on thread-naming. Much of the time it's pushy, oppinionated crap like "why do you hate the PSP" or "why do you hate Pokemon" that essentially demands that you be opinionated and stupid like the author of the thread.

2. l33t-talk. I abhor speaking in l33t. Only stupid nerds and those with special training know what "h3110 3\/3ry1 h0w 4r j00 d0ng?!?1 im 4 h4x0r but g0t pwn3d 1n c0unt3rstr1k3 4nd ju s00d ph33r m3 lol!!!!!!!11" means.

3. Excessive fanboyishness. I hate how almost every topic on favorite videogame systems results in a 4-way flame war between the Nintendo nerds, the Sega nerds, the Microsoft nerds and the Sony nerds. I just hate it.

There are many others, but they are too numerous.

Yep, you're right.

(What I'm REALLY trying to say is get used to it, forums are forums. Be glad that we still don't have to beat out words on our giant drums to far-off friends.)

Personally, I think that--

People with names that do not contain character names (or are simply unoriginal) are generally admirable and wise.

Funny how Glorb complains about originality when his signature makes him look like a hypocrite.

Hey, game quote sigs are okay, but is my name "DarkSonic"? No. Did I spell that like "h3y g4m3 kw0t3 s1gz r 0k bvt 1z my n4m3 'd4rkz0n1k'????" No. At least I didn't copy someone else's sig.

Wait... so you're saying you like what you are, but not what's not you...  What's this topic about again?  Are we supposed to share what we hate about Forums, or read this topic as if it was a post in some other place like Mario Bar?

I think it is quite obvious. You post your opinion here. Nowhere else. And I am criticizing all forums in general, any forum at all, including this one, but not only this one and not specifically this one. So while the TMK forums has its air share of generic-named, opinionated l33t-speakers, I am not maliciously seeking out the TMK forums. If you do not understand this, I would be amazed.

I'm such a sucker for threads about complaining!  I agree with ya, Glorb, about the names and stuff.  When I thought of what name I wanted for this forum I put a little thought into it first and tried to make it more original, even though it's probably not that much and maybe a little corny XD.  Thankfully people can always change names later if the get a better name.

I also get sick of forums with thousands of moving pictures that jam up my computer (maybe I won't mind someday if I get a faster connection).  I'm glad this forum doesn't allow that, plus swearing and other annoying junk that's everywhere else.

So does anyone go to a lot of other forums beside this one?  I think I saw Deezer at the forum in Nintendorks once.  And btw, how does Glorb's sig make him look hippocritical?

Hmmm, I think that I'm going to change my name to DarkBoshidragonofthemushroomlagoon.  Yes, it's a prefect name!

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

He's complaining about the lack of originality on message boards and his signature is the complete opposite of originality. It's not original, it's not funny and it makes him look like he's contradicting himself.

Kelso: Guys this is a game of Cat & Mouse between me & Hyde. I''m gonna make him admit he''s been going out with Jackie behind my back.

I think this might turn into what Glorb hates and everybody else does too: A Flame War. And as far as my opinion goes, I think the forums are great. Nothing is wrong with them.

That isn't what he means, Mr. Wiggles. He says that NAMES lack in originality. He is saying that many names are written too alike to one another. Lots of people have the word "Dark" in their names, and many others combine two characters' names into one. A person with a completely original name could use a completely unoriginal signature. [Familiar] quotes for signatures are popular, but not ridiculous, like what he's trying to get across with the issue of unoriginal names. People may have alike quotes because they find the same thing funny. I use a quote for my signature because I found it funny when I first read it. There's nothing wrong with that, but the excessive use of "Dark" in people's names just show laziness. Signatures have nothing to do with what Glorb is saying. Just because he's using a familiar quote for a signature doesn't mean you can flame him and call him a hypocrite. Furthermore if you don't find his quote funny, that's your problem.

Well, since people often use their names to represent themselves on the internet(like mine has my name in it, Rex is Yoshisaurus's middle name, MegaByte is really into computers, etc.), and most people on the internet are teenagers, and most teenagers are starting to see more of the real world, and the real world is dark and full of evil things, then no wonder people put "Dark" in their names.   Plus it's fun to go out in the dark.  And if they put a character's name in their name, it shows that they like that character in particular(unless there name is something like "Yoshi Hater").

I like NintendoExpert89's post, but I still have to get this joke out: "How dare people be unoriginal!"

“Of all the people I know, it is expected that Watoad will say ‘cheese’ first.”

Do you seriously care this much about this stuff?

I don't mind people choosing "generic" names. And if there really is someone called (whatever that really long name was), I would consider that person to have a quite amusing name.

As for 1337, I think it's funny. And I understand it without having had special training. Does that make me a stupid nerd?

And as for the fanboys business - ugh. I can't believe how many times I've been subjected to stuff like this. This is a Mario board; you can expect some people to dislike systems and games that are taking popularity away from Mario, and which have fanboys that are equally or more offensive. And it would be stupid for there to be opposing camps of Sega fanboys and Nintendo fanboys, seeing that Sega and Nintendo are no longer "enemies". Nearly all the Sonic games ever made are now on the GCN and GBA.

That's all I need to say.

It's pretty easy to understand.  You just... look at it.  I bte yuo cna rdae tihs by lkooign at it.  It's almost common sense.

I don't know if it's because this song I'm playing makes me sad(New Radicals: We Just Can't Get Enough), but if people feel so strongly about things that don't have much importance in the long run, then that's sad.  I mean like people that center their lives around a game character or movie or something.  It's probably more important to center your life around your principles.

"[ Familiar ] quotes for signatures are popular, but not
ridiculous" There's a difference between familiar quotes and overused
dead quotes. Dave Chappelle's Rick James and Wayne Brady lines are
great examples of overused dead quotes as is that Zero Wing quote.
"Signatures have nothing to do with what Glorb is saying. Just because
he's using a familiar quote for a signature doesn't mean you can flame
him and call him a hypocrite." Wow, thank G od for your ability
to confuse my post with flaming. I really don't know how I could ever
get on with my life without you being there to point out my faults in
my posting. "Furthermore if you don't find his quote funny, that's
your problem." It's not just me, go to any message board and try
to make that "All you base" joke. Tell me how many people still laugh
at that joke. Kelso: Guys this is a game of Cat & Mouse between
me & Hyde. I''m gonna make him admit he''s been going out with Jackie
behind my back. Fez: Guys, what happens in Cat & Mouse if the
cat is retarded? [proper noun problem]

There is also a difference between unoriginal names and overused quotes. In the case of unoriginal names, people can be lazy and just stick character names together and call it a name, or take a word and combine it with "Dark", and call that a name. It just shows you can only copy someone else and use it for yourself.

In overused quotes for signatures, that's different. Signatures, unlike names, are optional. If someone chooses a quote of his liking and use it for his sig, that is all right. Glorb likes the "Zero Wing" quote, so he uses it for his signature. Even if it is dead and overused, that doesn't mean a person cannot still find it funny. If Glorb likes this overused quote, he can use it. Liking something that someone else likes is not a form of unoriginality, but using something that someone else uses just for the sake of it is a form of unoriginality. For example, say you like to wear red hats, even if millions of other people also like to wear red hats. That isn't unoriginal, that shows what you and the millions of others like. If you and millions of others were wearing red hats because of a fad, that is unoriginal, for you're wearing a red hat just because everyone else is.

So if one uses an unoriginal forementioned type of name, it shows that you did not choose it because you liked it, you chose it for the sake of it. But since signatures are optional, it is a matter of opinion. If one uses an overused, dead quote because he likes it and finds it funny, he can use it. Glorb uses the "Zero Wing" quote because it is in his opinion that it is funny. Even if you or millions of others do not find the quote funny, that is your opinion, but that does not change a thing when the beholder does.

Nah, I'm happy with it for now. And, if I did change it, it would create confusion, just like LD said.

I''ve noticed something amongst some people''s signatures- they''re not always perfektt.
