Title: Apostrophreaky
Post by: BP on April 16, 2005, 11:04:37 PM
Just wanted to let all of the guys at TMK to know... When you make a profile signature, all apostrophes are replaced with quotation marks. Is this a mistake, or is it intended? For instance, my signature should say:
A bird can fly... But a fly can't bird!!!
But instead...

A bird can fly... But a fly can''t bird!!!

Type your signature in a program like word so the apostrophy is curved.  Then paste it in your profile.

Signature Test:

"Normal double"

“Word double”

''Normal single''

‘Word single’

A Rather Interesting Signature Discovery

In the above topic I said, "Fonts such as Arial (the one this forum uses), which were designed for the Internet, use the first of those quotation marks by default because browsers cannot tell which of the other two quotation marks to use when (like word processors can)." That is incorrect. It is the program (and sometimes the preference settings therein) you're using, and not the font, that determines which character will be produced when you hit the apostrophe/quotation mark key.

It's somehow fitting that Bird Person said, "Thank you, Luigison." at the same time that Watoad posted because the information I posted in this thread was based on Watoad's discovery.

You can also use Alt+0146 for the magic apostrophe.

⇧⌥] also works wonders.

ED;_;IT: Somehow the character you get with got stuck in there where it wasn't welcome.

Heehee, thanks. But how it managed to get more than 5 replies that weren't by me is a mystery. Oh, and the Alt+#### doesn't seem to work anymore. I can't make Yen...
