Video Game Chat / Re: A Compelling Article
« on: August 15, 2008, 10:18:16 PM »
I don't really know what "loyal" is supposed to mean either.

Nintendo loyalty involves engaging Sony and Microsoft fanboys in a flaming, rusty chainsaw swordfight, in hopes that the land will one day be pure of the oppressors who keep mother Nintendo from dominating this land in all her righteousness! Onward, brethren!

... sorry, got carried away.

As for the actual article, I thought of some of it's arguments some time earlier. Frankly, I do have hope that Nintendo will clean up their act, just like Sony did after E3 2006 (or pretty much all of the second half of '06, to be precise), but that doesn't cure the Nintendo Game drought at hand. Sure, there are good third party games (finally), but it's sad when a first party cannot provide suitable entertainment for it's hardcore audience. Could you imagine a couple having their baby cared for by another family because they want to spend all their time with the much cuter baby wrapped in cash?

Video Game Chat / Re: Brawl Stages
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:02:33 PM »
I'll describe my Brawl stages:

Slides o' plenty: A stage with a lot of slopes, all leading to a bed of spikes. This makes getting items hard, which could be viewed as a positive or negative aspect depending on who you ask. Size: Large. Background: Temple. Music: Fire Emblem theme, because it rocks.

The Treehouse: A childhood dream. It features three platforms in a house-like structure (it's open on both sides, though) with a tree on the bottom and ladders on both sides. Size: Large. Background: Valley. Music: Village of the Blue Maiden, because it has a childish charm to it.

Green Hill Zone 2: My personal favorite. A new version of green hill zone, composed of the most prominent parts of the level. To the left, there is a large circular structure (the loop). To the right, there are two long, uneven platforms, reminiscent of GHZ's "hills" as it were (their unevenness is a homage to the bumpy floor of Green Hill Zone) with a bed of spikes and springboard at their base. The stage also features a totem pole, a falling floor three blocks wide and horizontally moving platforms. Size: Large. Background: Valley. Music: Green Hill Zone, obviously.

The Temple: My attempt to create a small stage. It features various ruins to the left, a platform in the middle, and column to the right, with flights of stairs leading to the column. Size: Small. Background: Temple. Music: Snowman, as it bears a "heavenly" feeling to it.

Aerial Joust: A very basic stage. There are three conveyor belts on each side of the screen, which get bigger towards the bottom and a pit in the middle. The conveyor belts on the left side move the player right, and the vice versa. I designed the stage so that players would jump from one side to the other, beating the players senseless with aerial attacks while doing so. Size: Small. Background: Laboratory. Music: Target Smash, as it suits the insane feeling of the stage.

Aerial Melee: A far more complex stage. Characters begin on falling block in sectioned little "rooms". Beyond that, the stage has no floor, so characters jump on springs and climb on ladders to sustain themselves. Obviously, you should know the ropes of aerial combat before playing. Size: Large. Background: Laboratory. Music: BattleField ver. 2, because it looked all lonely in my list of music tracks.

That's about it. I also still have all three of the sample stages that came with the game.

You could hide in a cardboard box. Alternatively, you could buy it online.

The first picture is really good. I like the punch table. Dr. Mario looks like he wants you to check out the enclosed instruction book. Very nice over all. But I can't see the second picture.

Sonic and the Secret Rings.

I know Sonic is a rebel, but does that 'tude have to stem forth into the controls? The levels were too long and tedious. Thus, they didn't compell me like the levels in SA2 (the Racing ones, anyway). I just didn't have fun with the game.

Please don't kill me!

Mario Chat / Re: Mariology (serious posts wanted)
« on: August 01, 2008, 04:05:46 PM »
Here's a new Mariology debate!  Lately, Mario has been traveling to space and I couldn't help but notice a few things.  Back in Super Mario Land II, he needed a full space suit to survive on the moon.  In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, he travels there without one.  In Super Paper Mario, he needs a fishbowl to survive, while in Super Mario Galaxy he doesn't.  Some gamers would just ignore this and label it an inconsistency, but being the geek I am I've been thinking about the nature of outer space in Mario's world for quite some time.

I still think space in the Marioverse is still a vacuum, since Mario still wears a space suit occasionally.  But maybe there are special oxygen nebulas, or clouds of air, that create temporary patches of "livable space" that provide air and protection from solar radiation.  Or perhaps large celestial bodies in the Marioverse share an "expanded atmosphere" that spills into space.  And other ideas?

Rosalina mentioned at the beginning of SMG that the Luma in Mario's hat allowed Mario the survive in Outer Space. Also, in Super Paper Mario, Mario travels to another dimension, so I think it probably has different physics that would allow anyone to survive in outer space (as long as they have a breathing apparatus). As for the Thousand year door, well, maybe the Moon in Mario's world has oxygen and protection from solar radiation?

That's wrong.

Actually, I already knew that, but he still looks like him. Besides, my picture is more realistic considering mine's not edited (other then the name).

That's wrong. This is the high-def Peter Griffin.

I like exploring the levels, so they're all fun (even dire, dire docks). If I had to choose, my favorite would be Bob-omb battlefield because I gave it an awesome backstory.

Video Game Chat / Re: Sonic Xtreme - A true video game tragedy?
« on: July 18, 2008, 10:09:10 AM »
I've watched a couple movies, and Sonic runs rather... slow, doesn't he? Also, the control seems a little touchy. Sonic accelerates like he's on fire or something, and the Sega Saturn's D-pad wouldn't help matters (an analouge controller was bundled with Nights, but I don't think it ever became the default controller). Still, there were some clever mechanics under the hood, and that fish-eye camera looks awesome.

You know, as much as I like sequels to series I'm familiar with, I'm still more eager to try out something new. Where's Disaster and Sadness? Why cancel Project H.A.M.M.E.R. for Wii Sports Resort?

All of you buy Wario Land Shake so we get more 2D goodness on our home consoles.

I've recently heard H.A.M.M.E.R.(time) has been reconfirmed. I'd really love to get my hands on disaster, and it seems to still be in production but they sure are taking a long time. Also, Nibris said they would finish Sadness by Fall '09

Rhythm Heaven.

Yeah, I just found out about it today. Looks fun, but I question if it's as grand as something like Star Fox or Zelda. Well, at least they're trying something new.

Also, I'm not so sure about a direct sequel to Galaxy. SMG was great, but making a direct sequel would soil the originality a bit. They should put it in a new setting.

Oh, come on!  Where's Pikmin 3?

My thoughts on the mic: Why didn't they just put a mic into the remote in the first place?

Probably would have driven the price through the roof.

Plus, this allows everyone in the room to talk into the microphone.
