First, watch this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1299077812798464085&q=MARIO (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1299077812798464085&q=MARIO)
Differences:
A huge tan walking thing
Humans (look closely about 13 seconds into the video
Everything has been changed
Different Island
Also:
Green Yoshi (obvious) and Blue Yoshi (not so obvious) are acessable through AR codes. The blue Yoshi spits water.
EDIT: Since we're on the prerelease topic, I would also like to mention this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5937388580061280870&q=mario+64+beta). And this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2101095029013601800&q=mario+64+beta). And this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4453476903262624596&q=mario+64+beta). And this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1477708426272462663&q=mario+64+beta). And finally, this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3801778997812871892&q=mario+64+beta). Notice Peach's Slide, the health meter, the strange Whomp's Fortress painting, and the penguins.
-
Hmm, don't see a lot of the pre finished games videos.
Find one for M64, then you got something really weird.
-
That's not Peach's slide, that's a slide hidden in Tall Tall Mountain in the final version.
-
I.... love.... you....
-
On the forth M64 video, that large ship and submarine level looks impressive. Why take it off, Nintendo?
Check this out, really cool Mario Kart 64 Shortcuts and Glitches. Intersting! (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1873963189874425485&q=mario+kart+64)
-
Thanks cantthinkofaname. I'm actually working on a new site that covers this type of prerelease stuff.
-
http://speeddemosarchive.com/MarioKart64.html
Here are some crazy Mario Kart 64 shortcuts, Dude677
Wow, those Mario 64 vids looked weird.
Edit - Ach! Sorry!
-
Ah...
Its dude677.
Don't worry, people always do it.
Anyway, cool.
-
Here (http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=mario+64+beta) are some more SM64 videos I found. Actually, it's some new videos along with some of the other videos posted above. Also, If you look closely at the SMS video above, you can see the giant thing spew goop. From that, we can infer that the original plot was to get rid of the thing insted of Shadow Mario.
-
I.... love.... you....
Um, seeing as you posted before me without this comment, you must be referring to me, in which case WTD??
-
Haha, I just noticed that.
-
It's amazing what you find (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3244348300842323820&q=Super+Mario+64x4) on Google Video. A Super Mario 64 DS preview, with map changes. Also, notice the different background and the various pipes throughout the area. And the fact that you can go behind the castle.
-
Ypu can go behind the castle even in the original SM64. (I know what you're trying to say, the hill doesn't obscure the courtyard... There were screenshots on TMK showing these things.
-
You should look up "Don't Copy That Floppy" on GV. Ah, the wonders of the early-90's.
By the way, I noticed that I actually got Bird Person's signature immediately. Spooky.
-
Thanks cantthinkofaname. This makes me want to play SMS again. BTW, where'd you find the Action Replay codes you mentioned? They're not here http://us.codejunkies.com/codes_show.asp?rf=0&c=US&cr=USD&cs=$&r=0&l=1&g=7340124&p=7 (http://us.codejunkies.com/codes_show.asp?rf=0&c=US&cr=USD&cs=$&r=0&l=1&g=7340124&p=7) and the link from gamefaqs.com didn't work.
-
LINK REMOVED BY PT_PEACH
-
I disagree, that content was totally unappropriate for this thread.
L'son, www.gscentral.org and its message board are the premiere source for Action Replay codes, particularly debug ones... unfortunately it seems to have problems staying online...
-
Sorry. I removed it. I didn't know it would be labled inappropiate. Sorry Megabyte :(.
-
I think MEGAߥTE may have ment http://www.gscentral.org/
-
Yes, L'son, I did. It used to be www.gscentral.com but I guess they moved.
pt_peach, by inappropriate, I meant that it had absolutely nothing to do with the topic of this thread.
-
I just posted it because I though it was odd. No matter. End of discussion.
-
The thread name has the unwritten implication that it means odd videos [of pre-release Mario games].
-
The thread name has the unwritten implication that it means odd videos [of pre-release Mario games].
I don't think the "[of pre-release Mario games]" is implied by the thread name, but rather by the forum, "General Mario Chat".
-
I laughed so hard at that, pt_peach! XD XD XD You are one kool person!
-
(Back on topic) Since we're on prototype information and related, those of you may not know about the prototype Super Mario Bros. 2. Anyways, the prototype cartrage was sold on eBay for $350, and here are the differences:
1. Lamps, no potions in this version.
2. The player starts with 19 (?!?) lives.
3. The story behind the Sub-Con is different.
4. The bonus chance/ending screen is different.
5. The dungeon music is different.
http://www.planetnintendo.com/thewarpzone/smb_music.mp3 (http://www.planetnintendo.com/thewarpzone/smb_music.mp3) < here is a sample of the old dungeon music. Notice that it sounds a lot like the underground theme for SMB3.
EDIT: I would also like to mention this: https://www.kaejae-worx.com/gallery/albums/Super-Mario-World-Beta/smw2.jpg
-
That gets pretty phat near the end.
-
I don't have an exact clip, but there might be some on this website.
http://www.putfile.com/search.php (http://www.putfile.com/search.php) and type in Mario and Luigi in the search engine.
-
Found a screenshot featuring a Gold Big Bertha (or whatever you call it). This might just be a graphical glitch or something.
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Facmlm.overclocked.org%2Fhacks%2Fimages%2Fs3pik-05.png&hash=b56df7e9b38255ea2063beda6a73e4c3)

My! Aren't you informative! ;P
Well, I guess I'll contribute since I'm posting. Here's (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8663633986850904377&q=Paper+Mario&pl=true) a video of PMTTYD in its early stages. Most stuff looks the same, except the flight to the Door had some obstacles, there were apparently many more jump attacks, and Mario still made the "hop" noise from PM1 (see the very end).
-
http://www.planetnintendo.com/thewarpzone/smb_music.mp3 (http://www.planetnintendo.com/thewarpzone/smb_music.mp3) < here is a sample of the old dungeon music. Notice that it sounds a lot like the underground theme for SMB3.

That sounded neat! I wouldn't mind hearing an extended version if anybody can point me in the right direction..
Also, I can see that not a whole lot was changed from that screenshot from early SMW.. or, I don't see a lot that was changed, anyway. :)
-
A huge tan walking thing
Well, according to Nintendo (and infrences) that thing actually spews Widgets, as seen in prototype screenshots. From this, we can infer that:
1. Killing the thing would give you a shine sprite.
2. Shadow Mario was implented in the game, but sometime after the "alpha".
3. The thing would spew goop in the "alpha". There is proof behind this claim.
4. This is not a bump. If it was May 13, it would be.
-
On the forth M64 video, that large ship and submarine level looks impressive. Why take it off, Nintendo?

Aren't those just Jolly Roger Bay and Dire Dire Docks?
...and I like how Bowser had some sort of cougar growl.
-
Funny how it's May 13th, and here it is.
-
Another video! This time, it's a prototype of Waluigi Pinball and DK Pass in Mario Kart DS. Note the different title screen.

This is not a bump. If it was June 13, it would be.

I aslo found what seemed to be a beta version of Luigi's Mansion.
See this link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7477862805184796465&q=Luigi%27s+Mansion+beta
-
cantthinkofaname: That's awesome. Since I have the beta card, I need to figure out how to hack out those levels. (You can't play them normally).
Tingrio: That's not exactly the beta version of Luigi's Mansion, it's the Spaceworld demo video that was made to show off the GameCube's capabilities.
-
Not really a prototype video, but here's somebody playing Super Mario Galaxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4wnkLKgfgQ). A new move seems to be some sort of a spin-punch thing.
Edit: Mario Kart DS demo case: (https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.retro-games.co.uk%2Fnintendo%2Fmariokart_ds.gif&hash=9637a9934e2f7aee75cc84210940f30a)
The cartrage looks different as well.
-
maybe the first video was a mario sunshine Beta project.

I've seen that before. It looks a lot more like the NES.
-
New Wario Ware: Smooth Moves footage. Before each microgame, a box will come up that will tell you what to do. Or maybe that's just for the demo...

Super Mario 128 Spaceworld Demo. Isn't this what TMK wanted...?
-
No, we have that. We'd like the original direct-feed version, not a camcorded version.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu2N5iSdVB8&search=Mario%20Beta
A build of Mario Kart DS that's definatly earlier than the demo that we have. All the textures are there, the level isn't just plain white. Also:

This topic will never die. Now that that's out of the way...
The Lost Mario Anime (http://forevergeek.com/games/rare_super_mario_anime_on_you_tube.php) has been found. Sorry if everybody already knows about this.
Well... I didn't see it in the Mario Anime section, so I thought I would post it.
-
Things are different from the e3 version to the final product.
-
I don't think this has been posted yet and it has only been a few days since the last post(meaning it's not a revival), so...
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7861621877624863253&q=mario+kart (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7861621877624863253&q=mario+kart)
It's Mario Kart for the Gamecube. At this point, it's just a tech demo. Meaning there's only one person in a kart at a time in this version. It looks okay...
-
Nice find, too bad it's only 7 seconds...
Anyways, this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9218587751602045133&q=Nintendo) made me ROFL.

Thanks! I beleive The first one is the user's take on what the Wii's menu will look like. Apparently, this was made before The Revolution was re-named the Wii, as the creator apparently thought the Rev would be re-named the "RS", which I'm assuming stands for "Revolution System".
The Second video is pure absoulute gold.

That video seems to be a beta of Mario Kart 64's Koopa Troopa Beach in Mario Kart DS. With a name like Nokonoko, it had to relate to the Koopas (since that's what they're called in Japan).
-
This (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7604055076445844507&q=Nintendo) is a pretty odd commercial for a tomato-based game...
-
Well, the beginning was strange. We should make this an all-video topic now thta you posted that.

That's the corniest commercial ever (no it's not, stop lying). But look at this early Legend of Zelda commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvdBtQgIkKc). It's japanese, so I have no idea what they're saying. But it's sorta cool.

Super Mario 64 Yoshi Code (GameShark'd)
*Warning: May cause seizures.

I thought you posted some of those already. And that "Yoshi Code" looked rediculous.
-
I should mention that Nintendo RS (or any of the "Revolution" boot screens) is totally fake and really doesn't belong with all the other videos.
-
I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooved it!

Loved what?

Man, the beta looks better than the final in a few ways....
-Bowser gives you a heap of coins for beating him.
-Mario does the copter sipin after a triple jump.
-Mario's old voice sounds simply awesome.
-The castle looks cooler.
-The HUD even looks cooler.
-
What does HUD stand for?
-
Heads up display.

Congratulations, you just found a video of the alpha version of SM64! Now we know more about that one prototype picture that's been on Wikipedia...

Glad I was able to contribute something to this topic. ;)

The guy talking in that first video is wrong.. Mario is not 'president of the Mushroom Kingdom', but a 'resident of the Mushroom Kingdom.'
-
He either misread his cue card or the sound quality on the video sucks.
-
*LOLs at Mario being "president of the Mushroom Kingdom"*
Oh, and since you mentioned Yoshi, here's some beta Yoshi's Story...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7NFp4UodwE
-
Somehow tha looked better than the final product. Also, anyone notice the differences in the Yoshi's colors?
-Green Yoshi had brown shoes instead of red.
-Yellow Yoshi had red shoes instead of green.
-Dark blue Yoshi had green shoes instead of pink.
-Black Yoshi had azure shoes instead of white.
-Instead of a pink Yoshi with light blue shoes, there's a purple yoshi with yellow shoes.
-Instead of a white Yoshi wit hazure shoes, there's a brown Yoshi with very dark colored shoes, possibly black.
I wish there was a game that had a Yoshi in every concievable color. That would be pwnsome.
-
I totally agree with you, The Chef.
-
There needs to be more true platformers instead of spin-offs.
-
I agree.
-
You know that making two-word posts like that is considered spam, right? At least add something when you post.
-
You know actually, it looks like the pre-release videos for Sunshine (in the original post) look like they would add alot to the game if they kept some of that, I mean the colors aren't as vibrant as the original and the water or interface isn't as polished, but the giant thing walking would be cool and some of the look of the buildings and city layouts would be cool if they had that with the polished graphics but made it like an extended part of the plaza.
-
uPdAtz0rz
I submitted a question about the giant mushroom man in the prototype SMS to Nintendo Pulse. Hopefully it will appear in the magazine. Anyways, since I have an AR, I'm going to do some more studying on the prototype SMS.
-
HINT:Defeat it to get a shine-sprite.
-
Umm... no. I defeated it, and all I got was a coin.
uPd4tz0rz
I used my Action Replay to get into TEST Level, and I have come to the conclusion that the "banana man" is a later version of the mushroom-man. However, the idea for it was scrapped and it was only left in to test collisions (which don't work in TEST), bosses and enemies. The banana-man would be the boss, and to test enemies, it would produce goopies and widgets.*
*This is just a theory.
-
New discovery:
In TEST Level, there's that giant overripe banana that walks around everywhere. And it will walk into that pit, but it will continue to walk into that wall until it eventually goes through it. However, I have found that if you stomp on it for your first time, you will get 2 coins (1 for stomping on the banana-man and another that appears after you stomp on it). But if you do it a second time, you will get 3 coins (2 for stomping on the banana-man and 1 that appears after you stomp on it). Do it a third time, you will get 4, and so on. This leads me to beleive that there isn't just 1 Shine in that level, but 2. I'm currently attempting to get that hidden 2nd Shine (in TEST Level). More news after I get 100 coins.
EDIT: I'm at 99 coins. I'm about to get the 100th coin... awww... crap. The game froze. It froze when I touched the coin, so it seems that the programmers didn't implent 100-coin-Shines until after the test level.

Click (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9163042586762574732&q=Banjo+Kazooie)
Apparently, it's a beta version of Banjo Kazooie. Pretty cool
-
Alpha Nintendo Games are usualy always better than the Final Product.
-
Beta Nintendo Games are usualy always better than the Final Product.
If it is not to much to ask, Coolkid, could you tell us why you think this? I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, I just asking you to elaborate on your opinion.
-
Beta Nintendo Games are usualy always better than the Final Product.
Yes they are, with their uncompletedness and glitches and random areas where no collision sensors are placed...
</sarcasm>
Seriously, you actually think that prototypes are better than finals?
P.S.: You capatalized too many things...
-
I think he means that some of the placeholders and junk end up looking better than the final product, and let's not forget all the features that usually get scrapped even though it would've been cool to have them.
-
SM64:The wa-hoo thingie annoys me. And they planed to make it all ya wa acording to the SM64 Alpha Vid. Zelda64(Alpha OOT):Not as hard and more cell-shady ness. SMS:Perfect diffuculty in my looks. Banjo Kazooie(Beta):Easier to fly.
-
Looks like I'm posting in this topic again. This can only mean that I have yet another video, right? Right. This time it's Paper Mario.

Thanks for contributing.
The more prototypes, the better. 'Cause I'm opening up a website that's going to include all of this stuff. :-)

Strange. He walked on the wall of the castle in the same place we did at E3. Actually I guess it's not very strange. A lot of people did it, but meh.
-
Okay, I think I've got the TEST Level all figured out. The TEST Level isn't a test of all levels in the game, but rather a test of all of the objects in Delfino Plaza. So there would be a TEST Level for each level in the game (test level for Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach, ect.). That would explain the lack of flying pirhanna (sp?) heads and Puffies.
100,000 CTOAN points to anyone that can find a test level for every level in SMS.
-
I just can't stay away from this topic and this time I've found a video that might knock your socks off...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQmM9Ydf63g
-
Haha.
... looking suspiciously like Virtua Cop.
-
The early version of Wave Race looked like F-zero on water. 0_o
-
I found this interesting page (http://www.freewebs.com/luigisbiggermansion/luigismansion.htm) chock-full of E3 footage and screenshots from the beta version of Luigi's Mansion. It holds TONS of things, like different types of ghosts, room arrangements, and rendered FMV not featured in the final game.
-
I knew about some of that stuff already, but quite a bit was new to me. In any case, this Luigi fan is amused...

I remember there being another movie from/about Luigi's Mansion..
It was an FMV, and I think I saw it on IGN, before the GC came out. I can't remember if this is the beginning or not, but I do remember that it went something like this..
According to the camera angle, we are inside the front hall of the mansion. Luigi opens the front door, as the moon casts his silhouette onto the floor infront of us (we can't see anything but his shadow on the ground), he closes the door, slowly walks in, then stops about halfway across the entrance hall. The camera pans (or moves) up a little bit to show that we are seeing one of the Mario Bros (keep in mind that at this time, people thought we were seeing Mario..), and then the light comes up a little bit to show that we are seeing not Mario, but Luigi.
Luigi then turns to the camera for a second, turns back around, and is scared by a ghost (just like in the FMZ at that site..) I wish I could see that movie again.

I know what you're talking about and I went to look for it myself. All I've come up with is part of it and it's in a video here. It's the one called Spooky! E3 2001 footage.

More SMB3 lost levels? No wai!
Well, anyways, Japan got a ton of e-Reader cards for Super Mario Advance 4. Those cards contain the infamous Lost Levels. But wait, there's more: there's not just 16 levels, but 30!
More info here (http://www.pressthebuttons.com/2005/12/the_lost_ereade.html).
EDIT: Found scans of each card. View them here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/importaku/importakus%20collection/card-e/sma4%20carde/card%20list.html).

Seeing all that made me wish that they'd make a whole new 2D platformer that combines elements from all the classic games, with hand-drawn sprites as graphics. Hey, if they did it for Zelda, they can do it for Mario, right?

You people gotta watch this!!

That's a little misleading... those aren't SMB3 lost levels, just new "lost" levels for SMA4, which aren't exactly lost, just not released in the US.
-
'K. I found a link that shows the E-Reader levels' maps. They're here (http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/GBA/index.htm#SuperMarioAdvance4SuperMarioBros3). They're pretty interesting... too bad USA never got them.
-
Was that really all of them? Dang, they were unique. The blend of stuff from all five classic Super Mario games seems like the greatest thing ever. They should've made a whole game outta that.
-
Umm... 'k.
Some guy named drx on the S2Beta board found a prototype cartrage of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. But this isn't the same one we already have on a ROM. This one's later than the one we have, suggessting this is a RC1, unlike the demo we have. So far, the guy's paied for it, and he's going to be receiving it soon. More info once he gets the cartrage and dumps it.

I see that this topic has been renamed. You are dead to me.

Dang, I found a video of a beta Mario Kart yesterday, but I can't find it now!

SKAARG
The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 prototype. The one used in the very, very old Nick Arcade special. Note: This is a link to the topic that has the rom, not a direct link to the rom. Not considered warez.
I'm up for the drx-ism religion.

Not drawing attention to yourself is often a good idea.
-
Hmmmmm, I saw that beta screenshot of the title screen on a sonic gamecube game manual. I think it was that port sonic mega collection but I'm not shure....
-
DRX is also the guy who made that Ristar level editor.
-
I'm not sure if this will greatly contribute to anything, but I found an interesting (to say the least) video on YouTube. Link here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgtFXXzE8bk&mode=related&search=)

I remember that being posted here already.

Dr. Mario prototype stuff.
Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxfRXhgnFYI)
Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbtnJXfb_1I)
-
Sorry, that's not beta stuff. Those sprites are found in the cutscenes when you beat levels that are multiples of 5. The guy is totally mistaken.
-
I found this link at the Video Game Museum website. It's in the most recent updates for their website, talking about a SMW that looks more like an SMB3.
http://xoomer.alice.it/mononline/unseen/marioworldbeta.htm (how do take a single word and turn it into a link, like others have done in this topic?)
-
Hey, they just snagged those pics from Chris Covell (which he in turn had scanned from a a Japanese magazine from 1989)
-
Why do prototypes always look better than finished games?
-
I guess it's just human nature. If that prototype were the final and vice-versa, we'd probably say the same thing.
-
DRX predicts there are some SMW beta carts leaked outside of the Nintendo world.
Their value may rise up to about 50 000, most likely.
-
That was a really ambiguous post.
They predict, so they really aren't sure? Predict meaning they are saying that what they think happened in the past will in reality have happened in the future? I don't understand!
-

Umm... I dunno, I never thought protos were BETTER than the final copy. I always do think that there are some ideas the could have kept from the protos.

Somebody buy one of them.

Hey, you're the one who has $500.
-
Yeah... but I already blew off about $300 on video games and airsoft stuff.
Maybe I'll use the left over money for the unreleased Donkey Kong game.

Anyone ever come across the "Debug Room" (officially called "The World Map" in game) in SMRPG? I tried out the codes to get to it in the ROM, and I managed to map the entire area shortly after.
(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi41.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe270%2FNintendoExpert89%2FDebugRoom.png&hash=73ccf19dec75d7ff03aec7a5cd1dbdba)
When you first enter this room, a message appears across the screen, in the fashion of "narrator" messages:
The World Map
Talk to the person of the place
you wish to go to.
The Mario facing the screen is the one the player controls (and additionally the starting point), while the other does absolutely nothing but can be jumped on like a normal NPC. Talking to the Toads or Bowser will cause them to ask the player if he wants to go to a certain place (i.e. Nimbus Land), and thus the player can warp anywhere in game no matter what the progress is or what party members he has. Another Toad in the room also grants Mario the ability to gain any party member he wishes. The BGM for this room is the same as that for the Mushroom Kingdom area. The room exists in the Japanese version as well.
I also have a ZSNES save state somewhere if anyone wants it.
-
Yep, that's a big entry that we haven't yet gotten around to adding to Lost Bytes. We do have something special coming up in the fairly near future for that section though...

This would make and awesome Wii game though. You should find more beta videos about a N64 version of Kirby Air Ride.

A Kirby Tilt and Tumble sequel would be pretty awesome for the Wii.
