Today, Nintendo announced the launch line-up of Virtual Console games for the Wii.  Before the end of December, the following Mario games will be available for purchase and download in North America and Europe: Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Wario's Woods, and Super Mario 64.  Japan gets those games as well as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and Mario no Super Picross.  Several other games featuring Mario cameos will also be available.  NES games cost 500 points, SNES games cost 800 points, and N64 games cost 1000 points, and 2000 point cards can be purchased for $20/2000¥.

I wonder why Japan gets more than we do? Seems like the games could be easily distributed all over the world.
Remember that your first Goomba boldly you walk? When Mario touched that mushroom being brought up more largely remember that you are surprised? Miscalculate your jump that pit remember that it falls?

Oh, man! I'm so hyped up with the Wii! Hope SMRPG can be downloaded.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Hm... Can points be acquired in other ways than buying cards?

I don't own SM64, so I'm okay with this.

That's it?!

I can't go download games that I don't already own a copy of, and I have to buy points on a card?

I was expecting more. Like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time more.

Notice three key things:

1. The first post clearly declared:
... Mario games ...
which I took to mean games starring Mario.

2. It also said:
Several other games featuring Mario cameos will also be available...
...which could mean a variety of other games.

3. Again, in the first post:
Today, Nintendo announced the launch line-up of Virtual Console games for the Wii...
Obviouisly, more games are to come.

Well, since MB didn't post all games, here's the real launch lineup:

NES Games (500 Wii Points)

    * Mario Bros.
    * The Legend of Zelda
    * Donkey Kong
    * Donkey Kong Jr.
    * Ice Hockey
    * Pinball
    * Soccer
    * Tennis
    * Urban Champion
    * Wario's Woods
    * Baseball
    * Solomon's Key

SNES Games (800 Wii Points)

    * F-Zero
    * SimCity

N64 Games (1000 Wii Points)

    * Super Mario 64

Genesis Games (800 Wii Points)

    * Sonic the Hedgehog
    * Altered Beast
    * Golden Axe
    * Columns
    * Ecco the Dolphin
    * Gunstar Heroes
    * Space Harrier II
    * Toe Jam & Earl
    * Ristar
    * Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine

TurboGrafx 16 Games (600 Wii Points)

    * Bonk's Adventure
    * Super Star Soldier
    * Victory Run
    * Bomberman '93
    * Dungeon Explorer

10 new games are coming per month, sounds like.

The only ones I think I'll be getting are F-Zero, Golden Axe, and Ecco the Dolphin.

Here's the Japanese line-up, so you know just how much you're missing.

No fair.  I wanna download SMW and DKC.  I dont need to download LttP cause I already have it on my GBA

Wait a moment how is it that we get Legend of Zelda on our launch line-up, yet SMB is absent?  don't get me wrong.  I love both, which is why I'm wondering why we don't get both.

Perhaps Nintendo is saving SMB for a special event. Or maybe they had trouble getting it to work on the Virtual Console.

Are you daffy?
1. SMB is one of the most technically basic NES games; if that didn't work, likely nothing would.
2. They've already released SMB emulators on GC and GBA.
3. SMB is coming out in Japan at launch, just not here.
