It had to happen. The Wii Zapper isn't even on shelves, and already the watchdogs are foaming at the mouth. A few comments (from the NJ Star Ledger):
“Great, this is what we need. Children with guns learning how to aim and shoot. Then we can sit back and wonder what is happening to our country with kids killing kids……what’s next? Could we make it squirt blood, too” - random commenter
“….Why don’t they enclose an application to the NRA in every box as well….the marketing person who came up with this brain child of an idea should be fired.” - very concerned grandparent

Uh-huh, because it's the same with pr0n magazines and crystal meth--if it's sold, a kid will get their hands on it no matter what their parents say.
(The following is directed to whiny people who more than likely won't ever read this post.) Take responsibility of your freaking children--if you don't want them playing with a gun-shaped game controller, don't buy it for them. Also, what games are you buying for them? The Wii Zapper less a simulator for a real gun than a water pistol if they don't have any games in which you do kill.

I grew up with the Nintendo NES gun and the Super Score for the SNES... and I'm not running running around now killing people. Am I the only one? :)

What idiots. You're worried about a freaking zapper and there are drugs out there. What about the NES zapper?
If you hate it so much, but you don't hear other parents protesting about it, just keep it away from your kids and be quiet. Also, for them to use this, they'd have to have some kind of gun-simulator game.

On another note, this Wii Zapper better bring about a sequal to House of the Dead otherwise I have no incentive to buy it.

ha, I don't get it, has anyone ever objected to those arcade-shooters for the same reason? I like how so many people think that video games stimulate people's motivations in reality. Not to mention if the parents were that worried about the product could keep their children away from it. They act like no one has control over children's actions. If kids are that out of control parents need to take control anyway.

My parents don't allow my brother to play light-gun games in arcades. I don't even think he knows where my Zapper is, either, so basically he doesn't get to play light-gun games. Since I don't show any interest toward them at all, my parents don't bother me at all about it, though they didn't let me play those games when I was younger.

Why do media watchdogs torture us so?
Furthermore, why can't they just be good parents and just not buy it for them if they don't like it/ teach their kids not to go shoot people in real life? Why do they think children are going to go out and shoot people without motivation just because they played it in a game?
Heck, I was playing and mastering Time Crisis 2 at the arcades when I was only seven, even with my parents watching me and I haven't killed anyone. Know why? Cause I was raised well, and my mom focused on teaching me good morals and values, not sitting on the computer and complaining about un-realistic looking toy guns that she's not obligated to buy.

I played Mortal Kombat II when I was 5 or 6 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy when I was 8. I received House of the Dead II for my 12th birthday.

And how, exactly, is Nintendo "Feeding" the problem, Jack? If there was better gun control like over here in Canada, there wouldn't be so much gun violence. I doubt that a plastic shell is really going to increase crime rates.

Actually, the original got some unwanted attention too. It first came out in the NES colored scheme (Y'know, black, grey and light grey) but they felt it looked too real, so they were forced to change it to the orange/grey color you're probably familiar with... But come on! This doesn't look remotley like any functioning gun of this or any other past centuries. future ones, well, that's anyone's guess.

Yeah I know, and now after being used with like 4 games ever it hasn't been a big deal for 20 years.
P.S. I'm pretty sure it wasn't just Nintendo's decision to change the color scheme.

I have a gray Zapper. Until I found out about the ludicrous problems people had with it I thought it was pretty weird that mine was the only gray one I'd ever seen... every other one I've seen online were orange.

I unfortunately have an orange one, although I would really like a (sleeker, less eye-burning and more in tune with the NES color scheme) grey one.

When we were little, my brother had an orange one. I broke it. We have a gray zapper now, but if you teach you kids right, they won't go out and murder someone after playing a video game.

Okay. I can see why people are freaked out about the Zapper. After all, the Steel Battalion controller led to thousands of incidents of giant-mech-related violence among six-year-olds, and we all know about the Guitar Hero guitar being used in countless robberies.

Personally, I can't see how the Zapper is going to hurt. I mean the only reason people play shoot-'em-up's is because it's morally and ethically reprehensible to do it to real people, right? Plus the fact that it is illegal.

I honestly can't believe these people. It's not like the zapper resembles a real gun or feels like one. These are probably the same exact people that got upset over the NES Zapper. I felt like I was playing Action 52 again while reading those idiotic comments about how "dangerous" the zapper is. I'm surprised I never heard anything about other Light Gun games since these people seem to get so worked up over them. In fact, text can't show how I feel about those comments:

I actually am writing a paper in college on this... more or less. I am writing about the people who want to ban everything because it could hurt the children, even going so far as to ban touching (high-fives or even handshakes).
I find there to be far too many over-protective individuals in the world these days. Some people really should just not talk...
My paper, of course, will be much better argued.

This all reminds me of Jack Thompson condemning Wendy's for its Wii toys because Manhunt 2 was coming out for the Wii, even though it never made any reference to said game.
