Title: Sonic's Future
Post by: silverstarman on January 16, 2008, 08:08:43 PM
Well, we all know Sonic was a phenomenon when he made his splash on the Genesis, and his games, with some downhill slopes, got better and better, but really, who every thought the blue hedgehog would finally choke? Do you think his games will get back on track, or do you think the speedy and overused hedgehog will finally take his last trip down the roads of gaming. I'm a believer, but I wonder what you guys think.

Wow, people call him the "Blue Blur"?  Pssh.  Mega Man got the way better end of the blue-video-game-nicknames stick.

The Rush series is looking quite decent (speaking of which, I need to get Rush Adventure some time), and the Rivals series, while not as commercially successful, is apparently quite fun to play. Sonic Chronicles sounds really interesting too (it's an in-development RPG by Bioware). I think the Sonic series has lost a lot of its luster compared to the Genesis days, but I wouldn't say it's dead just yet.

I think the series, like Sonic himself, will just keep on going no matter what's in its way... until a broken camera and bad voice-acting sends it falling off of a cliff.

I never thought he choked. =/

Look at Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. That game seems to be doing fine...

Some people are into Mario & Sonic due to the fact that Mario is in it. At least, that's what seems most likely.

Get rid of all the characters except Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik, and it'll be getting somewhere.

Speaking of Robotnik, he should be Robotnik again; I'd be much more frightened of a fight against the maniacal DOCTOR IVO ROBOTNIK than some twit called Eggman. I can see Eggman being a nickname for him courtesy of Sonic & Co., but how can the Doctor expect to be feared with a name like that? It sounds like a really bad name for a superhero.

Honestly I think that the Sonic games would be better off without the music (with the people singing and crap) without the new characters (Shawdow, Rough, etc) AND him not being in the human world. Video game characters (like Animal type characters) in the real world don't mix so well.

I don't mind them introducing new characters, but I'd like it if they'd stop cramming too many characters into one game (*cough*Sonic Heroes*cough*). 12 playable characters in four "teams" is pushing it.

The problem with Sonic (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SonicSyndrome) is that all of his newest games are trying to be more serious than they really should be (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DarkerAndEdgier).

His older games are still fun, and Sonics 2 and 3(&K) are like some of my favorite video games ever. Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 were both fun, but they marked the beginning of the downward spiral into throwaway characters and furry little critters riding motorcycles and swearing.

That's his name in Japanese. I honestly don't know why the changed it back, though. "Eggman" only made sense when he was, you know, making "egg" stuff. Like the Death Egg in Sonic 2, or the Egg Carrier in Sonic Adventure. It's funny that once they officially renamed him, in Sonic Adventure 2, he was too busy getting his screen time jacked by Shadow to make any new "egg" stuff.

I found a pretty neat article about the poor hedgehog on DA. It's a few years old, but it's still pretty dead-on (http://anotherblazehedgehog.deviantart.com/art/Dissecting-a-Hedgehog-23723007).

Arr, Sonic was like the captain of sinking ship, his face reflects the feelings of a man who is brave but sad that his vessel (Sega) be sinking to the bottom of the sea. May his soul rest in peace in the depths of Davey Jones' locker.

Harharhar, I love it when I tells a good joke. Sonic be the greatest captain next to Mario and nothing will ever change that, not even his new age games that stink worse than the poop deck!

Mega Man's official nickname is the Blue Bomber.

And Thorn sort of covered this, but yeah, Eggman is his actual name. I'm all for Actual Names instead of this random American stuff.

Here's what they need to do:

1. Sega/Sammy needs to stop rushing Sonic Team to get the games done. Let them take their time and get all the bugs out.

2. Go back to having the games be focused on speed. No treasure hunting or shooting stages. All normal enemies should be defeated with just one hit, and you shouldn't have to kill an enemy or stop and break some boxes to get past a certain part of a stage, like you had to in Sonic Heroes. The point of the stages should be just to get to the end, like in the old days.

3. Get rid of the 4Kids voice actors.

4. Stop making new characters. There are already plenty of them.

Actually, Robotnik was his real name, but in Sonic Adventure, Sonic dissed Robotnik by calling him "Eggman" and it practically picked up from there.

Sonic Adventure 2 canonized both names anyway, so there's no point in changing his name at all. I prefer to call him "Eggman Robotnik", just to annoy/confuse people.

Well, whatever you call him, I'd just like to say that his art for the first Sonic games easily made him one of the ugliest people I've ever seen.

If you're referring to the American art, then yes, he was quite ugly indeed.

I think the Japanese art makes him look more benevolent than an evil scientist intent on world domination should. The American art makes him look ugly and evil, which seems about right.

The way the Sonic series is going, it might as well go to Robotnik in a bikini.

I just checked. Robotnik in bikini is more disturbing than:

- Bowser in drag.
- Barney from The Simpsons dressed as the genie from "I Dream of Jeannie".
- Bender from Futurama as a big fat naked guy, being rolled like a ball out of the room.
- George Costanza posing as a model.

Uh, I did come to this thread to post something about Sonic, but this is far more interesting.

No, Sonic has no future. His games get stupider and stupider every year. Sonic shoulda stopped when Sega stopped making consoles.

In that case, Nintendo should've given up on Mario before they made any MP games. I mean, look at the Sonic Rush games; that's enough evidence to me that Sega hasn't completely destroyed the Sonic franchise.

ahh, but Nintendo is still making consoles.   Oh, and the MP games aren't bad, they just need to stop pooping so many of them out for one console.

Sonic adventure was just so easy to control, the 360 sonic came and bam! it was like the game wasn't even complete! so dang glitchy, I tried to run a loop and I fell threw! oh my gosh! finish your sonic games sega. good graphics, storyline does not mean anything if you can't play it. go back to the old way.

Basically that linked essay hit everything on the head. Sonic and The Secret Rings was a step in the right direction, but some glaring issues kept it from being a classic like the Mega Drive games were.

Also, the 4kids voices are horrid. Thank god the for the Japanese voices, pity they are forced to work with crappy scripts, but could the wording of the scripts (namely from 360 Sonic, Rings and Adveture 1 & 2) have been changed in the Japanese version?

I hope Brawl will let us switch between the English and Japanese languages, like Melee did.  I'd switch to Japanese so I don't have to gouge my ears out from having to listen to Jason Griffith's horrid Sonic.  Come on, give us back Jaleel White or Ryan Drummond.
