Title: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: silverstarman on March 22, 2008, 02:18:29 PM
I hope to find MegaMan, Super Mario Kart, and both Pilotwings and Pilotwings 64 on Virtual Console. I can't believe these games have't been put up yet.

It's been said many times, but I'll say it again. EarthBound (And Mother 3 if possible). Also, the Densetsu no Stafy series.

MegaMan 2, Duck Tales 1 & 2, Mario & Wario, Starfy 1-3, BS Zelda, Tetris Attack, and Duck Hunt w/ Wiimote support.

EarthBound (or, preferably, the whole console series), Kirby's Dreamland 3 (well, I think that one's been confirmed for... eventually), and any other Nintendo-related games that came out in Japan but not here.

I'm sure Kirby's Dreamland 3 will make it, but it seems like Nintendo is releasing the Kirby games in chronological order, except Kirby 64.

YOSHI'S ISLAND.

Why hasn't Nintendo released this one?
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: missingno on March 22, 2008, 10:01:00 PM
The Yoshi's Island graphics are difficult to mimic, I hear.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: Chupperson Weird on March 22, 2008, 10:27:01 PM
"Mimic" is a pretty different word than "emulate" in computers. Anyway, Star Fox and Yoshi's Island may not be supported yet due to difficulties in Super FX or Super FX 2 emulation. This is only a guess.

If that's true then how'd they put up Super Mario RPG.  Oh wait, they haven't.

/me goes to check wiki for SFX games.

Edit:  Hmm.  I was thinkg that SMRPG used the Super FX chip because it didn't work in my Tristar 64.  I was thinking it had extra connectors on the card, but now I'm not sure since it wasn't listed on Wiki.

Edit 2:  Ah, it's the Super Accelerator 1 chip that's on SMRPG

(https://themushroomkingdom.net/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv204%2Fretroyoda%2Fsa1_cart.jpg&hash=8814cc7343d82500271b8b1aaaf96257)

Looking at this list it seems possible that emulation could be what's holding up some games like SMK, Pilotwings, SMRPG, SF, and YI.

They put F-Zero on, right? Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings have no excuse since they're simple Mode 7.

Pilotwings 64
Kirby Super Star

One thing I would like to see Nintendo release is the almost-but-not-quite-finished Star Fox 2. As for Kirby Super Star, I doubt it will get a VC release since an enhanced DS remake is apparently on its way.

/me goes to check wiki for SFX games.
Argh. "Wiki" is not an abbreviation for Wikipedia. A wiki is what Wikipedia is.

Yeah, Super Mario Bros. 3 sure didn't get a release since it's been remade on GBA!

Also, shut up.

Also, Star Fox 2 was pretty much completely finished.

Sometimes I sit here and think..."why?"
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: silverstarman on March 23, 2008, 03:42:55 PM
its already out

I mean, the reason they cancelled the game was because they wanted to work on Star Fox 64 and release that instead. Also, if you play the rom of Star Fox 2, it's only neutral, and it's alot like the first game.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: Chupperson Weird on March 23, 2008, 05:28:29 PM
Neutral? What does neutral mean?

I personally thought Star Fox 2 was pretty rad and I almost want to say it was cooler than Star Fox 64.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: silverstarman on March 23, 2008, 05:32:58 PM
Neutral, like, just O.K.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: Vidgmchtr on March 23, 2008, 11:04:31 PM
Neutral and "O.K." aren't really synonymous.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: penguinwizard on March 23, 2008, 11:15:59 PM
Is neutral some new slang that I haven't heard of?

Anyway, another vote for Star Fox 2 here. It was almost finished, it was going to be released if it weren't for Star Fox 64, which ended up using All-Range Mode and I think a few other things from Star Fox 2 in the process. Just release the darn thing already. And Mother 1, since that was basically completed too.

I'm still holding out for Secret of Mana. Banjo-Kazooie would be the best but I personally don't think that's going to happen.

...I thought SMW2: Yoshi's Island was already on VC? *checks* Frick, it's not! Alright, that too. Because we need a version without added Yoshi sounds. It was perfect as is. .......well, except for, you know. The sound that challenges Jim Carrey's claim of most annoying sound in the world.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: Chupperson Weird on March 24, 2008, 02:25:51 PM
Uh, Mother was a complete, released game. If you mean the English translation, it was technically complete as well. They just didn't produce it.

Star Fox 2 also had a better soundtrack than Star Fox 64, aside from a couple excellent tracks in SF64.

Post by: BP on March 24, 2008, 03:20:38 PM
I have nothing against Yoshi's voice and would not buy Yoshi's Island on the Virtual Console to replace Super Mario Advance 3.

I want the Mother series, Banjo-Kazooie, (didn't think of it until now but) and a translated Legend of Stafy series.

1. Yoshi's voice is awesome.
2. Zoness and Area 6 are my most favorite music tracks in Star Fox 64.
3. I am sure Chup's correct when he says Star Fox 2 has awesome music.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: Chupperson Weird on March 24, 2008, 04:46:20 PM
I like Yoshi's voice and I like the extra levels in Super Mario Advance 3. However, I prefer the colors, resolution, and music synth quality of the SNES version better. Good thing I already own it for SNES too.

Yes, Zoness rules all SF64 music.

It totally sucks that there will probably be no Rare games for the VC.
We got DKC1 and DKC2, but Donkey Kong was Nintendo's property to begin with.

And it does suck because Rare's games were some of if not the best games available for Nintendo systems during the SNES and N64. Didn't mention NES because the only Rare game I recall for that was Snake Rattle N Roll. *checks rareware.com* Oh, actually, they did Marble Madness and R.C. Pro-Am and Battletoads for NES too, among a zillion other games. Didn't mention GameCube because not everyone liked Star Fox Adventures.

If Rare's titles aren't going to appear on the Wii Virtual Console, then they should be available on X-Box Live Arcade or whatever it is. Just make them available in some form. I'd say Rare's games were some of the best games of all time... at the time of SNES and N64.

I guess it has to do with the fact that it's an adventure game, rather than a rail-shooter.

But I do agree with the concept of Saturn hitting VC. Maybe reasonably priced Panzer Dragoon Saga, among all those other gems that go for triple digits on eBay.
And like silverstarman said, Master System/Game Gear are hitting VC.

These people who think SFA is on any level even close to any Zelda understand nothing about games.

They must just numbly stare at the screen's flashing colors, flailing their hands around the controller, enjoying all games about equally.

They understand nothing of polish, design, control, focus, or fun.

Because I haven't played every NES game on Earth, I was born in 1985 so I'd be too young to remember most NES games, and because I don't have the faintest clue what Slalom is. I was pulling game names from the Rare website, most of those early games I've never heard of.

Star Fox Adventures better than The Wind Waker.

Was too better than the Wind Waker. Go ahead, pitchfork me. I stand by it, I hated spending 3/4 of the game sailing across the ocean. Loved Star Fox Adventures... until I found out I spent three fruitless hours at the T-Rex planet place because I didn't know there was a switch on a flippin' tree.

...wait, how the Frith did this turn into a Star Fox Adventures vs. Zelda games argument? SFA is never going to appear on the Virtual Console! *looks* Oh, right, because I mentioned SFA first.

My opinions in regards the last zillion or so posts:

-LoZ is one of the best videogame series ever.

-StarFox Adventures is--I repeat, is--better than most people say. However, in typical Rare fashion, it had irritating voice acting, excessive collecting, painfully obvious fetch quests, and the occasion pretty-much-friggin'-impossible challenge.

-LD is experiencing male PMS.

I actually liked a lot of the voice acting, though some lines were fairly corny. The voices themselves were alright, Steve Malpass does a pretty good Fox.

excessive collecting,
Eh, I didn't find that part too annoying, whenever it came time to use something like fuel cells or scarabs, I almost always had just enough.

Not much to say here.

The Lightfoot test of Strength. I HATED doing that, and still do whenever I play through the game. In my very first play through, it literally took me half a month to finally overcome that stupid test. Didn't have much trouble with any other challenges.

Alright, I admit it. Rare is awesome. Completely awesome. I know everyone says that they overdo it, but I don't care. They're awesome in nearly every way. Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox Adventures and other games rule and I can't think of a more satisfying experience then sitting down and playing a game made by Rare. Sure, some games haven't been the best in recent years (*coughGrabbedbytheGhouliescough*), but the great games they've had in the past overshadow that 100x over.

Seriously, excessive collecting and impossible challenges make an adventure game. I'm not lying when I seriously say I enjoyed DK64 and Banjo Kazooie more than Mario 64 and LoZ:OoT. Majora's Mask is the only other game that comes close to competing with the amount of fun I had playing the Rare games, and even then I still think I like BK and DK64 more.
Title: Re: Games you hope to find on Virtual Console
Post by: Chupperson Weird on March 29, 2008, 11:22:41 PM
I can think of games a lot more satisfying than those made by Rare. In fact, many Rare games I don't find very fun at all, and Majora's Mask is the lesser of all 3D Zelda titles. I consider actual gameplay to make an adventure game. I do/did love Star Fox Adventures, but if you think about it for a second it's very hard to lose, and fetching is sort of a non-point because you get tons of everything. The combat is pretty much nonexistent and what's actually cool about it is the environments and music, and the walking around physics feel very nice as well.
Also, I liked all of the voice acting. Except maybe Tricky.

Donkey Kong Country 2 rocked.

When thinking back on it, I might agree. Excessive collecting is annoying but alluring because it means an extra bit of adventure to find those last few secrets. Impossible challenges... well, I only appreciate that if the impossible challenges are near the end of the game, because then it's a real test of my ability. Otherwise it's a moment I always try to skip over. Looking back, what I tend to remember most about Rare games is the adventure aspect. I know other games are great about adventure too, like the Zelda series, but few combine it with the lovable characters that Rare comes up with.

Snake Rattle n' Roll
Irritating voice acting - N/A
Excessive collecting - Getting those Nibbley Pibbleys got to be a real pain after a while.
Painfully obvious fetch quests - N/A
Friggin'-impossible challenge - Toughest game I've ever played. I bow to anyone who can complete it without using an emulator. Screw the person who said this game has precise control, I know there was some hidden gravity intentionally pushing me off sloped ice blocks. Those ice blocks are evil, man.

Donkey Kong Country series
Irritating voice acting - No. Or at least, there weren't any monkey screams to my recollection. Beaver yelp (jumping on Gnawty) is still cute, although I think Rare overuses that sound effect.
Excessive collecting - I swear some of those bonus levels are impossible to find without a player's guide. You're in some random place in the level, you jump up, and you end up in a hidden Bonus Barrel.
Painfully obvious fetch quests - Going off-topic a little, but Donkey Kong Land required you to fetch K-O-N-G just to save the frickin' game. Incredibly stupid.
Friggin'-impossible challenge - It was getting there near the end of each game. I think Toxic Tower from DKC2 is notoriously difficult. Now getting through Snow Barrel Blast the normal way (going through the gauntlet of barrels), that was impossible for me as a child. Only through using an emulator and a lot of patience did I finally get through that. I'm so glad that there was a shortcut, because that level seemed incredibly hard just for the end segment compared to the rest.

Banjo-Kazooie
Irritating voice acting - Some of the garbled voices are annoying. Most annoying garble is the toilet for obvious reasons. Others are charming. Kazooie's garble is the second-best garble I've ever heard (#1 is Rayman's garble from Rayman 2).
Excessive collecting - ...yes... oy... I don't even see why they needed so many items. What the fudge is a frickin' Jinjo good for? It's just a Red Coins knockoff as an excuse for another Jiggy. Er, then again, it was an excuse to hide colored things in places with similar colors. You remember the Yellow Jinjo in Click Clock Wood, practically have to trip over the guy to find him.
Painfully obvious fetch quests - It became obvious when note doors and Jiggy puzzle things kept popping up out of nowhere. Cheapest part of all was having to pass two Note Doors after the "end" of the game. At that point, the game's pretty much requiring you to find every last thing.
Friggin'-impossible challenge - Rusty Bucket Bay, inside the engine room, the whole enchilada just to get the Jiggy from behind the propellers. I haven't had the courage to try passing that without cheating.

Perfect Dark
Irritating voice acting - Yeah. Looking back, heh, some pretty lame lines. I wanted to punch the CIA operative in Area 51 in the face when he said "Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize you wanted him to shoot you, I can call over some more guards if you'd like."
Excessive collecting - I chalk this up to not being a Goldeneye veteran, so I find the objectives in later levels and higher difficulties to be ridiculous. To this day I haven't passed dataDyne Extraction on Secret Agent because of that stupid helicopter.
Painfully obvious fetch quests - Erm, can't think of any, except for when I have to protect someone or something.
Friggin'-impossible challenge - I'd say yes just because I'm bad at first-person shooters. I can't believe in the Combat Simulator that they threw in a bot that moves faster and aims better than a normal player would (DarkSim). Yet, strangely, they're easier than PerfectSims who always get head shots within one nanosecond of opening a door.

Star Fox Adventures
Irritating voice acting - Some of them. Mostly the Star Fox team save for Fox. I think Steve Malpass has the best Fox voice yet, just drips with contempt for the characters he has to work with. Or maybe it's because I was too busy being floored by his facial expressions. Chief Lightfoot had my favorite voice. In honesty I think it sounds incredibly close to the SF64 voice. For a while I didn't know there was a difference. Most annoying voices of all were when anyone spoke in Dinosaur language. Oh, wait, no, I take it back, the most annoying voice were those cackles made by the flying green goblin bats in Thorntail Hollow. God I hated those things. They always came back five seconds after you defeated them.
Excessive collecting - Ugh. Penny Arcade brilliantly parodied all the pointless crap you had to pick up, and VG Cats did a parody as well (also parodies that Fox thinks everything he picks up is the surprise find of the century, judging from his facial expression). I agree, the stuff you picked up in this game was even more ridiculous than Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. Who gives a flying flip about Bafom...Bafomidad... those fat hopping red rabbit things?
Painfully obvious fetch quests - Yes, double ugh.
Friggin'-impossible challenge - Strength test in Lightfoot Village. Some sort of shooting challenge while atop a Brontosaurus thing at the place after the T-Rex place.

*looks up* I may be taking this way too seriously. Bafomdads from Star Fox Adventures are without a doubt the most stupid thing I've come across in a game.

About those Starfox Adventures "impossible challenges": I thought the escort mission was challenging, but not too challenging. I've also discussed the matter of the Test of Strength before... How is it that everybody hates the Test of Strength and few found the Test of Fear challenging, again?

Yes exactly.

I found none of the so-called "impossible challenges" impossible. Especially the Light Foot test of strength. I don't know what everyone's problem is with that one, because I beat it after about 3 tries.

The Test of Fear was challenging, but I learned to stop paying attention to the screen and focused solely on the bar at the top. Plus, I made very small movements on the control stick, which seemed to help. Still, near the end the meter thing shoved all the way to the left and was a hair's length away from going off the edge. I felt like I was pushing against some heavy weight to push the meter back to the middle, considering the meter was shaking like mad at that time.

Thanks to YouTube, I can now see what I missed this whole time. And I say that every single time the Test of Fear comes up, because I keep thinking the Test of Fear was memorable for the visuals that went on (something about seeing the fear in Fox's face... or, no, wait, I bet that was with the T-Rex fight).

I hated the Test of Strength because I'm not a fast button tapper. It takes me a few tries to get into the zone where my finger twitches rapidly enough (and I nearly kill my finger in the process) in order to do it. Had to do that focusing to unlock the secret battle stages in Bomberman 64 without getting all the gold cards. Had to unfortunately repeat that trick here. Someone suggested some tape and something else to rapidly tap the button for you, a way of cheating, but at face value that technique looked ridiculous. Never tried it.

Up through Perfect Dark, Rare developed brilliant and fantastic games, on equal footing with the best stuff Nintendo was putting out (DKC vs. SMW, DKR vs. MK64, BK vs. SM64, etc.).

Then Rare turned mediocre and has since put out okay and sorta good games. Star Fox Adventures was the first of these games.

Blame Microsoft if you want, but I'm not totally sure it's their fault.

I can think of games a lot more satisfying than those made by Rare. In fact, many Rare games I don't find very fun at all, and Majora's Mask is the lesser of all 3D Zelda titles.
I used to not like Majora's Mask as much as the other Zeldas, but I've actually come to adore it without even replaying it that much just because it's so dang creative.

Also, those SFA impressions are from when I played it when I was, like, twelve, so they may not be the most accurate... You know what, nevermind, they are (but it was still an okay game).

Some VB games are gonna run me up so much money in the future.
It'd be nice to play the super rare ones via VC.

Yeah, everybody proposes these crazy methods involving waving your thumb joints or spoons or sticks or rubber bands over the button a certain way, but they never helped me beat the third Canary Mary race in Banjo-Tooie.  At least the fourth race has some strategy to it, but my brother only beat the third race once on some sort of fluke.  That'll probably be our only 100% file for that game.  There should be a law or something against button-mashing challenges.

Well, maybe if enough complaints are sent to Nintendo or something, like how the control-stick rotating minigames in the first Mario Party had tons of children with hurt palms. I don't recall Hudson ever making any more minigames like that for the other 7 Parties.

I usually see it for far more, and that's if I see it at all. There's plenty of rare titles that can't be found very easily. I have all the notably common ones except the really common baseball one.

My meaning was, the rest of the ones I could think of go for less than $15.
And I mean, there are only 22 games total. That isn't a "plenty" in my book.

A second version of SF64 was released on VC to fix way-too-sensitive analog stick tracking and to put the slowdown back into the game. (?!) As for Kirby 64, I don't know.

I love my Virtual Boy. And the one game I have for 32X.
The Japan-only games were included in my count of 22.

VC Star Fox 64 will catch my interest when they somehow bring rumble back into the mix.  I feel that playing SF64 w/out rumble would be like playing SSB without a rumble pack: the experience would just not feel the same.

That reminds me of the time my brother always set the N64 controller with a rumble pak on the floor just before the big explosion in Macbeth, and we watched how far it moved. It was pretty funny.

Uh, if it in no way determines future Virtual Console releases, then what's the frog-flippin' point?

Determining future releases and letting NoA know that we freaking want the game... those aren't quite the same thing. I'd say that if poll results showed that EarthBound would make Nintendo a load of effortless money, they might do something.  Either they really do hate Mother fans for no particular reason, or they just don't know that more than a few Mother fans exist in North America. With all the ineffective calling and things it sure feels like the former... So he path to take would seem to be, "Annoy Nintendo until they give up."

Totally! Actually, when are we gonna see the sequel to that? I mean, not only did Nintendo make a follow-up in Japan called Mario Artist for the N64DD, but they've got two super-popular systems on their hands right now with a prediliction for drawing-based games.
