Personally, I find the Chinese animal/element (or sometimes Chinese animal/western zodiac symbol) combinations more accurate.  Sometime eerily so.

Of course, that's merely my opinion.

I know one way to change cursors, but it
only works within an "embed" square, and it requires some software as well.
But, oh, the things that can be done within a simple "embed" square!

...And of very poor quality.  Isn't it obvious that games from American developers just aren't as great (with exceptions, of course) ?
All the great, epic games come out of Japan.  That's simply how it is.

Oh, and on topic:  I saw Luigi in SM64 last night.  Apparantly he simply showed up late.

I switched from "Multimedia Fusion Express" to "Multimedia Fusion," which is better, despite the shorter name.
And everything went wrong then.  When an enemy was jumped on, it would fly sideways forever.  Same with debris from bricks.  And point values would stay on the screen forever as well, cluttering it up.  The map didn't even work at all.

Mario Chat / Re: I had a strange Mario dream

Does age really matter as far as dream content is concerned?  If you've got some sort of opposition to the subject, just don't open the topic.

Anyway, I had an odd Mario-related dream last night...
The first part is unimportant; it involved going to a supermarket and stealing a rather confused employee.  But soon after, some friends and I were rifiling through some old N64 games, and came upon a strange Mario racing (at first) game that took place in a wintery setting.  We turned it on and watched the intro:
Mario was driving along in his little Mario kart, when a "bully," wearing a scarf and pointy sunglasses, caused him to crash, and Mario's shoe came off.  The bully kicked the shoe around a bit, and one of my friends commented that "everybody's shoe makes a noise when it hits the ground except for the bully's.  It's not very fair."
The scene then went to Yoshi, who was bundled in winter clothing and shivering, trying to stay warm.  Yoshi's name appeared on the screen, along with a strange, long last name (someone commented on that, too, but I can't remember it clearly.)
Then Luigi was shown on a slanted, circular piece of land, practicing with a tennis racket.  I think I then commented on how the place looked very familiar, except in a winter setting.
Then Donkey Kong, who, looking upset, was pounding the ground with his hands, á la Super Smash Brothers, as an Aztec-Style temple slowly crumbled to the ground in the background.

It gets less Mario-oriented after that, but it's still very strange.

I switched to a different program made by the same company, and the subtle code changes made the game unsalvagable.  I can still give the last "stand-alone" save that I had made, but it's far from finished.

What are you all talking about?  Luigi STARS in Super Mario 64!  I'd recognize him anywhere, with his green clothes, red overalls, and pale blue skin.  Just as he starred in every other Mario game.

I still don't know why he wears an 'M' on his hat, though...

I assure you, Mario Maniac, that the name is purely a coincidence.  It does, after all, seem the next logical step:  Mario Brothers, Mario World...  Mario Universe!

Anyway, as far as fan games go:  it's not as if we have these names copyrighted.  If two games hold the same name, it won't rouse too much trouble.

Still, I guess I could add a subtitle to mine for recognition purposes if you're particularly concerned...

I'm using a great little progam called Multimedia Fusion Express.  Behind that ostentatious name it's actually a very formidable program.  The game I'm making is called "Super Mario Universe," named in reference to a Fox Trot comic.  It's not of great quality, relative to comercial games, but for a fan game with a development staff of one, it's pretty good.

The program I'm using (and others related to it) are quite good if you'd like to try your hand a game programming.  I'd certainly recommend them.

Anyway, good luck to everybody on making those visions into playable realities.

Ooo!  Controversy!

Hmmm, I guess I still haven't made my point too clearly...

Ok... take Zelda (not exactly a platform game, but I still have the same point.)
I've played and beaten both of the N64 games and most (I can't say all, I've never owned a NES) of the others.
The new games:  graphically appealing, nice challenge, good story, lots of details...  yet not the same.  The Z-targeting battle system gave for some nice duels, but it can't compare to running aimlessly through the overworld and being smothered by fierce (well, not exactly fierce, but numerous!  And they still hurt!) enimies, fending them off with an arsenal off items that had applicable uses (the ice wand:  unneccesary, but great fun!) other than to topple one obstacle to get to the next level, the constant beeping reminding you that one more wrong step will mean the end of the line and another embarassing notch on the death toll.

I'm not exactly sure how to express what I'm saying very clearly, but I just played A Link to the Past last weekend.  Great fun, great challenge.  (Maybe the simplicity of the gameplay leads to more complexity of the game?  I dunno.)
I'm also not saying anything against 3D games, but if there is a way to parllel that feel that you get with the supreme organized chaos and panic of trying frantically to right yourself onto a platform while accidentally knocking yourself off of it for the third time while trying to evade a barrage of enemy fire in a platformer, or the sheer joy of finding a well-hiden secret, or getting and brand new item that lets you knock soldiers off cliffs in a new and exciting manner (Zelda, of course,) then the game industry has yet to achieve it.

(Sorry for the lack of Mario citings, but Zelda was fresh on my mind)

What a coincidence!  I'm making a Mario game too!

...but it is going rather slowly; levels take a while to make.
...plus I'm don't like making animations.
...and then there are bugs (infernal goombas!)

Still, it'll be done eventually... I hope...

Hey, shyguy22, how are you going to make your game?  Do you have some special game industry connections that could get it produced, or a you planning on programming it á la computer?  Just curious...
